Recent studies have revealed that Nitric oxide(NO) was one of the demonstration for the physiological regulator, endothelial derived relaxing factor(EDRF) and that NO was produced by ultraviolet irradiation in human. Thus, the present author have carried out a experimental study on the change of hematological, histological value of ultraviolet irradiation in sprague-dawley rats. The subjects were divided into four groups of ten rats each selected at random. There were 4 groups: 1. no irradiation control; 2. ultraviolet $75mJ/cm^2$ irradiation group; 3. ultraviolet $150mJ/cm^2$ irradiation group; 4. ultraviolet $225mJ/cm^2$ group. After a irradiation, hematological and histological tests were performed to observe erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCH, MCHC, MCV, $O_2$ saturation, pH, $PO_2,\;PCO_2$ value and to observe histological changes. In hematological tests, erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit significantly increased in $75mJ/cm^2$ than control group and more $150mJ/cm^2$ ultraviolet irradiation group respectively. Also In blood gas tests, $PO_2$ significantly increased in $75mJ/cm^2$ and more $150mJ/cm^2$ group than control group. Whereas $PCO_2$ significantly decreased in $75mJ/cm^2$ and more $150mJ/cm^2$ group than control group (Duncan-Tukey test, P<0.05). In histological tests, control and $75mJ/cm^2$ group unchanged, but more $150mJ/cm^2$ group changed that it was cytolysis, cytotoxic effect, acanthosis, proliferation of keratinocyte, appearance of amorphous cell and pyknotic nucleus, production of sunburn cell. In conclusion, the present author results support the importance of the relation between NO effect and hematological, histological value by ultraviolet B irradiation.

Background: Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is a prominent technology that can preserve superior genetic traits of animals and expand the population in a short time. Hematological characters and endocrine profiles are important elements that demonstrate the stability of the physiological state of cloned animals. To date, several studies regarding cloned camels with superior genes have been conducted. However, detailed hemato-physiological assessments to prove that cloned camels are physiologically normal are limited. In this study, We evaluated the hemato-physiological characteristics of cloned male and female dromedary camels (Camelus dromedaries). Methods: Therefore, we analyzed variations in hematological characteristics and endocrine profiles between cloned and non-cloned age-matched male and female dromedary camels (Camelus dromedaries). Two groups each of male and female cloned and non-cloned camels were monitored to investigate the differences in hemato-physiological characteristics. Results: All the animals were evaluated by performing complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, and endocrinological tests. We found no significant difference between the cloned and non-cloned camels. Furthermore, the blood chemistry and endocrine profiles in male and female camels before maturity were similar. Conclusions: These results suggest that cloned and non-cloned camels have similar hematological characteristics and endocrine parameters.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of utilizing blood tests for the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by investigating the hematologic characteristics of TMD patients according to the main source and level of TMD pain and analyzing their interrelationship. Methods: Clinical examination following the research diagnostic criteria for TMD and hematological and psychological evaluations were conducted in 357 TMD patients. Patients were divided into groups according to the main source of pain (myogenous, arthrogenous, and combined pain) and the degree of pain according to the graded chronic pain scale (GCPS). Hematological differences among the groups were statistically analyzed. Results: The C-reactive protein (CRP) level was significantly higher in the arthrogenous pain group compared to the combined pain group (p=0.032). There was no significant difference according to the GCPS classification. There were significant correlations between some of the TMD pain indices and the hematologic indices, and also between the psychological indices and the hematologic indices. Conclusions: This study suggests the possibility of applying blood tests to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of TMD. Further research should be conducted focusing on the role of CRP in TMD pain with more refined methodology and a longitudinal study design.
To investigate bovine leukosis virus (BLV) infection in the cattle rearing in a dairy farm where a case of bovine lymphosarcoma had been identified several years ago, the 196 Holstein cattle including newborn calves to 12 years of age were tested. The BLV antibody test and peripheral lymphocyte count for bovine leukosis were carried out by the immunodiffusion (ID) test and Bendixen's Kep. These tests were performed 2 to 4 times at the interval of 3 to 5 months. The observed results were as follows: 1. The positive rates of BLV-antibody in the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th tests were 23.3%, 28.1%, 49.0% and 55.7%, respectively. The conversion rates from negative to positive in the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th tests were 8.9%, 41.4%, and 20.0%, respectively. Results showed that the highest conversion rate was observed at the 3rd test which was conducted after winter. The highest positive rate by ID test were observed in 4 year old cattle in the 1st and 2nd tests, and in 2 year old herd in the 3rd and 4th tests. 2. In hematological test by Bendixen's Key, the positive and suspicious rates in the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th tests were 5.8 and 7.8%, 8.3 and 6.6%, 8.7 and 10.1%, 10.8 and 19.6% respectively. Results showed that the positive and. suspicious rates increased in course of time. 3. 70 to 100% of the positive cattle in hematological test were positive for BLV-antibody test. All of 13 cattle with persistent lymphocytosis (PL) were also positive for BLV-antibody, indicating the high relationship between PL and BLV-antibody. 4. The number of total leukocytes and absolute lymphocytes in the BLV-antibody positive cattle appeared significantly higher than those of the negative cattle. The markedly increased cell counts were observed in the cattle over one year old. 5. The mean of total leukocytes and absolute lymphocytes in the negative cattle for BLV-antibody increased slightly after sero-conversion into positive. 6. In the clinical examinations during experimental periods, none of the 72 positive cattle for BLV-antibody showed any lesions for bovine leukosis.
This study was designed to know the effect of kimchi on the hematological and immunological parameters in vivo and in vitro, respectively. To study the effects of kimchi on the hematological parameters, rats(S.D., male) were divided into 4 groups and fed diets containing of 3%, 5% and 10% kimchi or kimchi free diet(control) for 6 weeks. The results of CBC(complete blood cell) tests obtained from the bloods of rates were as follows ; In 10% kimchi group, the level of WBC(white blood cells), RBC(red blood cells), Hgb(hemoglobin), Hct(hematocrit) were increased significantly than those of control group(p<0.05). MCV(mean corpuscular volume), one of the red cell indices, was also increased significantly in the animals fed 10% kimchi(p<0.05). RDW(Red cell distritution width) and PCT(plateletcrit) was lowest in 10% kimchi group(p<0.05). To examine the effects of kimchi on immune cell growth in vitro, three types of mouse immune cells-spleen cells, bone marrow cells, thymus cells-were cultured with extracts of salted Chinese cabbage, fresh kimchi and fermented kimchi(for 1 week) for 12 or 20 days. Control was supplemented with PBS(phosphate buffer saline) excluding kimchi extract. The results of spleen cell, bone marrow cell, and thymus cell cultures showed similar tendency: control medium accelerated death of cells, extracts of salted Chinese cabbage reduced the rate of cell death, and extracts of fresh kimchi and fermented kimchi promoted cell growth. From these results, it could be suggested that kimchi possibly has an effect on the hematopoietic ability and increases immune cell development and growth in vivo.
We observed an outbreak of calf anaplasmosis at a farm in Chonbuk area during winter season, which was diagnosed by the hematological and serological tests. The results are as follow. On hematological observation for infected thirteen calves (ages 1 to 25 days) showed anemia with hematocrit $27.7{\pm}7.7%$, erythrocyte $6.9{\pm}1.9{\times}10^6/{\mu}l$, hemoglobin $11.3{\pm}3.2g/dl$, MCV $40.6{\pm}1.5fl$, MCH $16.3{\pm}1.6pg$ and MCHC $40.5{\pm}3.6g/dl$. Anaplasma marginale was observed in all of the calves's erythrocytes by Diff-Quick and acridine orange staining, and were reacted by ELISA.

The carcinogenic potential of steviol, a metabolite of/ stevioside (a compound that is used as a sweetener for food and drink), was examined in hamsters of both sexes. Groups of 55 male and 55 female hamsters were given diets containing steviol at 0, 100 and 500 mg/kg diet for 22 months in males and 18 months in females. After 6, 12 and 22 months in males and 18 months in females. hamsters from each group were sacrificed for hematological and biochemical tests. Growth food utilization and consumption, general appearance and mortality were similar in treated and control groups. The mean life span of hamsters given steviol was not significantly different from that of the controls. No treatment-related changes were observed in hematological, urinary and biochemical values at any stage of the study. There was no significantly altered development of neoplastic or non-neoplastic lesions attributable to steviol treatment in any organ or tissue. The highest level oj steviol in the diet which still causes no effects in hamsters was 500 mg/kg diet, under the experimental conditions used.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the single-dose intravenous toxicity of Guseonwangdo-go glucose 5% pharmacopuncture (GWG5). Methods: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups of five males and five females per group: an intravenous (IV) injection of 1.0 mL of normal saline solution per animal was administered to the control group; IV injections of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mL of GWG5 per animal were administered to the experimental groups (G: 0.1, G: 0.5, and G: 1.0). Observation of clinical signs and body weight measurements were carried out for 14 days following the injections. At the end of the observation period, hematological, biochemical, and histopathological tests, as well as necropsy examinations, were performed on the injected parts. Results: No mortalities or adverse clinical signs were observed in any of the groups. The body weights of all groups continuously increased. In the hematological and the biochemical tests, females in G-0.1 had minimal changes, but those changes were not dose dependent. On necropsy examination, no abnormalities were observed. In the histopathological test, focal inflammatory cell infiltrations were observed in two female rats, one in the control group and one in G-1.0. Also, one female rat in the control group had an epidermis crust. These changes were concluded to have been caused by the insertion of the needle into a vein. Conclusion: The above findings suggest that the lethal dose of GWG5 administered via IV injection is more than 1.0 mL per animal in both male and female rats. Further studies are needed to establish more detailed evidence of its toxicity.
This study was conducted by surveying 616 male workers living in Ulsan City regarding their health status based on lifestyles such as alcohol consumption, smoking and exercising as well as physical measurements and biochemical tests. The average height, weight and BMI(body mass index, $kg/m^2$) of the subjects was 170.9cm, 70.2kg and 24.2, respectively. The rate of drinking was $80.9\%$ and the rate of smoking was $53.4\%$. Seventy four percent of subjects responded that they exercise regularly. The results of the blood biochemical tests revealed that the average hemoglobin concentration was 14.7g/dl, and the levels of GPT(glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) were 32.74unit/l, 26.99 unit/l, respectively. The average hemoglobin concentration for the subjects aged in the 50s was 14.39g/dl, which was significantly lower than those in the 20s(14.81g/dl), 30s(14.69g/dl) and 40s(14.73g/dl). The blood glucose level and the cholesterol level also increased with age. Also investigated was the blood pressure of the subjects increased with age,. and there was a significant increase(p < 0.05) for the subjects in the 50s compared to those in the 20s. The frequency of alcoholic beverages was significantly correlated with systolic/ diastolic blood pressure(p < 0.05) and $\gamma-GTP(gamma\;glutamyl\; transpeptidase)$(p<0.01). The duration of smoking showed a negative correlation(p < 0.05) with the hemoglobin and positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol and $\gamma-GTP(p<0.01)$. The study shows that blood pressure, blood glucose level, cholesterol level, GOT, GPT and $\gammaGTP$ level, increase with age, which indicates higher possibility of degenerative diseases, calling for nutritional education in terms of advisable lifestyles regarding eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking and regular exercise.
Objectives: Radix Ginseng has been traditionally used as an adaptogen that acts on the adrenal cortex and stimulates or relaxes the nervous system to restore emotional and physical balance and to improve well-being in cases of degenerative disease and/or old age. Radix Ginseng has been used for a long time, but the safety of ginseng pharmacopuncture needs testing. This study was done to analyze the single-dose toxicity of water- soluble ginseng pharmacopuncture (GP) intramuscular injections in rats. Methods: All experiments were performed at Biotoxtech, an institution authorized to perform non clinical studies under the regulations of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Each group contained 10 Sprague-Dawley rats, 5 males and 5 females. GP was prepared in a sterile room at the Korean Pharmacopuncture Institute under regulations of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). GP dosages were 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mL for the experimental groups; normal saline was administered to the control group. The animals general condition was examined daily for 14 days, and the rats were weighed on the starting day and at 3, 7 and 14 days after administration of the pharmacopuncture. Hematological and biochemistry tests and autopsies were done to test the toxicological effect of GP after 14 days. This study was performed with approval from the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of Biotextech. Results: No deaths were found in this single-dose toxicity test of intramuscular injections of GP, and no significant changes in the general conditions, body weights, hematological and biochemistry tests, and autopsies were observed. The local injection site showed no changes. Based on these results, the lethal dose was assumed to be over 1.0 mL/animal in both sexes. Conclusion: These results suggest that GP is relatively safe. Further studies, including a repeated toxicity test, are needed to provide more concrete evidence for the safety of GP.
