Asymmetrical and unbalanced features such as rotor blade of helicopter, actuator of hard-disk in personal computer are usually manufactured with composite materials. In this case, mass distributions and center of gravity of the parts are important because of their static balancing. Therefore in the manufacturing processes, it is needed to check out the exact data of weight and gravity center. In this study, it has been studied experimentally the balancing of laminated rotor blade by using multiple-point weighing method and lab-view system.
The present paper describes the results of performance analysis for UH-60A rotor blade in hover. For the numerical simulations, commercial CFD software, FLUENT was used with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The flow solver was based on node based scheme and second order spatial accuracy options was used for simulations. For the enhancement of wake capturing capability, high resolution grid was used around tip vortex region. Granting that somewhat over prediction of thrust was observed near blade tip region, performance was well correlated with experimental data within 3% accuracy in the operating region. Finally it was shown that the present flow solver can be used for preliminary performance analysis tool for hovering helicopter rotor blades.
A small unmanned helicopter was suggested to replace the conventional spray system. Aerial application using an agricultural helicopter helps precise and timely spraying, and reduces labor intensity and environmental pollution. In this research, a rotor system (SW05) was developed and its lift capability was evaluated. Lift force for the dead weight of the helicopter was obtained at the grip pitch angle of $12^{\circ}$. As the pitch angle increased to $14^{\circ}$ and $16^{\circ}$, the payload increased to 176 N and 216 N, respectively. Compared with SW04 airfoil performance in the total lift, the SW05 airfoil showed nearly the same capacity, but the payload of the SW05 was reduced because of the increased dead weight. A rated flight condition was defined as lifting mean payload of 294 N with the grip pitch angles of $16{\sim}17^{\circ}$ at the rotor rotating speed of 850~950 rpm for the adjusted engine power. The fuel consumption would be 4.8~6.0 L/hr, and the air temperature of cooling fan should be kept below $160^{\circ}C$.
The ground resonance instability of a helicopter with bearingless main rotor hub were investigated. The ground resonance instability is caused by an interaction between the blade lag motion and hub inplane motion. This instability occurs when the helicopter is on the ground and is important for soft-inplane rotors where the rotating lag mode frequency is less than the rotor rotational speed. For the analysis, the bearingless rotor was composed of blades, flexbeam, torque tube, damper, shear restrainer, and pitch links. The fuselage was modeled as a mass-damper-spring system having natural frequencies in roll and pitch motions. The rotor-fuselage coupling equations are derived in non-rotating frame to consider the rotor and fuselage equations in the same frame. The ground resonance instabilities for three cases where are without lead-lag damper and fuselage damping, with lead-lag damper and without fuselage damping, and finally with lead-lag damper and fuselage damping. There is no ground resonance instability in the only rotor-fuselage configuration with lead-lag damper and fuselage damping.
This study investigates the performance and blade airloads for a rigid coaxial rotor of high-speed compound unmanned rotorcrafts. The present compound unmanned rotorcraft uses not only a rigid coaxial rotor, but also wings and propellers for high-speed flights. For the rigid coaxial rotor in this work, CAMRAD II, a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, is used to study the performance at a flight speed of up to 250 knots and blade section lift forces at 230 knots. As the flight speed increases, the rotor power decreases; however, the power of propellers increases to overcome the drag force of a rotorcraft in high-speed flight. The effective lift-to-drag ratio of a rotor has the maximum value of about 11.6 which is much higher than the value of the conventional helicopter. The blade section lift forces of the upper and lower rotors at 230 knots show the similar variation trends for one rotor revolution, and the impulses because of the aerodynamic interaction between both rotors are observed.
Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter can reduce labor and pollution. The development of an agricultural helicopter became urgent for both precise and timely spraying. In this study, a rotor system for unmanned helicopter capable of 20 $kg_f$ payload, was developed and lift capability was evaluated. A lift force over the dead weight of the helicopter was obtained at the pitch angle of $6^{\circ}$. As the pitch angle increased to $8^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$, the total lift increased to $74{\sim}81\;kg_f\;and\;86{\sim}93\;kg_f$, respectively. A range of engine speed at the rated flight condition, lifting mean payload of 23 $kg_f$ was determined. The data acquired from this study will be used for designing tail system and RF console in the next stage of the research. The rated lift capability was enough for loading 20 liters of spray material including spraying equipments.
The objective of this research is to design blade planform to reduce high speed impulsive(HSI) noise from a non-lifting helicopter rotor using CFD method and optimization techniques. As for the aero-acoustic analysis, CFD technique for aerodynamic analysis and Kirchhoff's method for the acoustic analysis were used. As for the optimization method, Kriging-based genetic algorithm(GA) model as a high-fidelity optimization method was chosen. Design variables and constraints are determined for arbitrary blade planform. The result shows that the optimized blade planform with high swept-back and taper ratio can reduce HSI noise by suppressing generation of the strong shock wave on blade surface and propagation of the noise to the farfield flow region.
A three dimensional inviscid parallel flow solver has been developed for the simulation of rotor blades in forward flight. The computational domain is divided into stationary and rotating zones for the more efficient mesh adaptation. The conservative mesh treatment algorithm is used for the convection of flow variables and fluxes across the sliding boundary. A deforming mesh algorithm using modified spring analogy is used for the blade motion. In the present paper, detail descriptions of numerical analysis for forward flight are introduced. Some results are presented for a two bladed AH-1G rotor and compared with experimental data.

In this study, shape memory alloy damper with characteristics of pseudoelastic hysteresis for helicopter rotor blades are investigated. SMAs can be available in damping augmentation of vibrating structures. SMAs show large hysteresis in the process of pseudoelastic austenite-martensite phase transformation which takes place while subjected to loading above the austenite finish temperature. Since SMAs display pseudoelastic hysteresis behavior over large strain ranges, a significant amount of energy dissipation is possible. A damper can be designed with SMA wires prestressed to a baseline level somewhere in the middle of the pseudoelastic stress range. An experimental study of the effects of pre-strain and cyclic strain amplitude as well as frequency on the damping behavior of pseudoelastic shape memory alloy wires are performed. The effects of the shape memory alloy damper on aeroelastic and ground resonance stability of helicopter are studied. In aeroelastic stability, the dynamic characteristics of blades related to pitch angle and the amplitude of lag motion for the rotor equipped with SMA damper were examined. The performance of SMA damper on ground resonance instability are presented through the frequencies and modal damping with respect to rotating speed.
