Design and Application of Database System for Dynamic Balancing Test of Helicopter Main Rotor Blade (헬리콥터 주로터 블레이드의 동적밸런싱 시험에 대한 데이터베이스 설계 및 적용)

  • The dynamic balancing test of helicopter main rotor blades is a blade rotation test conducted on the ground to make the track of each blade and the load on each pitch rod to a similar level before the flight tests. The purpose of the test is to reduce the vibration occurring on main rotor system as a result of dissimilarity of each blade. The RTB test has been performed for a long period at Whirl Tower Test Facility located in Goheung Flight Centre, accumulating its data. As the amount of the results has become increasingly enormous the needs for the development of database system has been raised to manage the data with effective method. This research aimed to describe the development of Dynamic-Balancing Database System for the RTB test results. For the design of the database system the informations of RTB test results have been categorized into properties, connecting each others according to its logical meaning, and comprised into a database system with relational elements. It has been shown in this paper that the Dynamic Balancing database system enables to effectively accumulate the RTB test data and to be utilized for the data analysis.

KFLOW Results of Airloads on HART-II Rotor Blades with Prescribed Blade Deformation

  • A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver, KFLOW, using overlapped grids has recently been developed to simulate unsteady flow phenomena over helicopter rotor blades. The blade-vortex interaction is predicted for a descending flight using measured blade deformation data. The effects of computational grid resolution and azimuth angle increments on airloads were examined, and computed airloads and vortex trajectories were compared with HART-II wind tunnel data. The current method predicts the BVI phenomena of blade airloads reasonably well. It is found from the present study that a peculiar distribution of vorticity of tip vortices in an approximate azimuth angle range of 90 to 180 degrees can be explained by physics of the shear-layer interaction as well as the dissipation of numerical schemes.

  • In the present paper, a new version of DYMORE, which is an analysis to solve a nonlinear multi-body dynamics problem, is used to simulate an Individual Blade Control (IBC) algorithm in order to reduce vibration in helicopter rotors. The Active Twist Rotor (ATR), in which Active Fiber Composites (AFC) are embedded, is utilized for IBC. The main purpose of the present investigation is to compare the analytical results with experiments and previous version of DYMORE. The experiments are performed at NASA Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. According to the present result, it is observed that the correlation regarding the vibratory loads is improved.

  • A CFD analysis of helicopter flowfield in forward flight is considered as non-trivial issue because of the complexity of vorticity-dominated flowfield. In this work, a study on the selection of the proper location for the installation of the Pitot probe is conducted using a CFD code which can deal with the interaction of rotor blade vortex and body. To describe the flow patterns for rotating rotor blades and body, the sliding mesh scheme is utilized. Pressure distributions and flow patterns are also analyzed to identify regions free from the interaction of body and wake induced from rotor blades.

  • In this paper, diagonal implicit harmonic balance method with overset grid technique is applied to analyze helicopter rotor blade flow in hover and forward flight condition. The chimera grid need interpolation time with sub-grid and background grid in moving problem such as forward flight on every time step. Present method is available enough to reduce the grid module interpolation time. In order to demonstrate present method, Caradonna & Tung's and AH-1G rotor blades are used and the results are compared to other researchers' result and experimental data.

  • In this paper, the helicopter aerodynamics is simulated in hovering and forward flight. Also, an overlapped grid technique is applied in this simulation to consider the blade motion and moving effects. The Caradonna & Tung's rotor blade was selected to analyze the unsteady aerodynamics in hovering and non-lift forward flight. Also, the AH-1G rotor blade was selected in forward flight. In forward flight case, the numerical trim was applied to determine the cyclic pitching angles using Newton-Raphson method, and the numerical results were in good agreement with experimental data, especially, the BVI effects were well simulated in advancing side in comparison other numerical results. The governing equation is a three dimensional unsteady Euler equation, and the Riemann invariants condition is used for inflow and outflow at the boundary.

  • This paper describes the manufacturing processes for a flexbeam and torque tube made of composite materials, along with the procedures for testing their basic properties. A flexbeam and torque tube can be considered to be key structural components of a bearingless rotor hub system. A hinge offset effect can be realized by a large elastic deformation and twist of the flexbeam, and the blade pitch control forces are transferred by the rotation of the torque tube. The basic property tests included bending and twist tests to determine the flap stiffness, lag stiffness, and torsion stiffness of the flexbeam, torque tube, and blade, and these tests were performed prior to starting the whirl tower test. In addition, the estimated results were compared with experimental data, and the calculations were found to be a good match for the analysis results and had a similar tendency. Through these results, we could confirm that a flexbeam and torque tube made of composite materials satisfied the structural stiffness requirements.

  • The objective of this study is ensuring safety of cabin when the blade impacts into a obstacle by verifying safety of the rotor mast and the transmission using impact loads calculated from the simulation. The rotor mast shall not fail and the transmission shall not be displaced into occupiable space when the main rotor composite blade impact into a 8 inch rigid cylinder in diameter on the outer 10% of the blade at operational rotor speed. To calculate the reaction loads at the spherical bearing and lead-lag damper, blade impact analysis was performed with FE model consist of composite blade, tree(or rigid cylinder) using elastic-plastic with damage material and several contact surfaces which were created to describe a progress of actual failure. Also, the reaction loads were investigated in change of blade rotation speed and pitch angle.

  • This paper presents design of a bearingless main rotor of SNUF (Seoul National University Flap) blade equipped with active trailing-edge flap to reduce the hub vibratory loads during helicopter forward flight. For that purpose, sectional design of the flexbeam is carried out using the thin-walled composite material rotating beam vibration analysis program (CORBA77_MEMB) in EDISON. Using the multi-body dynamics analysis program, DYMORE, blade dynamic characteristics and those of the loads control are examined using the active trailing-edge flap in terms of the flexbeam sectional design.
