  • Pumping performances of a helical molecular drag dump(MDP) and of a radial MDPs are numerically analyzed by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. A helical- and radial-MDP have rotating pumping channels cut on a cylinder and on a disk, respectively. For a helical MDP, the present results agree quantitatively with the previously known numerical results. For radial MDPs, both of the Type 1 (having pumping channels cut on the stationary disk) and of the Type 2 (having pumping channels cut on the rotating disk) are analyzed to predict their performances for various parameters, i.e., the radius of curvature center of the channel wall, the depth of the channel, the clearance between housing and disk, and the rotating speed. The results show that the performance of the Type 2 is superior to that of the Type 1, and that for all types the pumping efficiency decreases as the clearance increases. Also, the radial type MDP has larger leakage losses in the direction of pumping channel than does the helical one.

  • In this study, heat and mass transfer characteristics of five components solution (LiBr+Lil+LiNO$_3$+LiCl+$H_2O$) which could be substituted for commonly used LiBr solution are tested using a helical absorber. The arrangement of helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the system more compact as compared to conventional one. The effects of experimental parameters, such as the solution flow rate, cooling water, solution temperature, solution concentration and surfactant have been investigated in view of the heat and mass transfer. The results of the experiment of heat and mass transfer performance show that five components solution should have 2% higher concentration fur equal absorption capacity of LiBr solution. But considering that five components solution have higher solubility than LiBr solution about 4% high concentration, five components solution could be applied to a small sized water cooled or air cooled absorption chiller/heater. The increase of heat and mass transfer coefficient by surfactant addition is about 25∼30% and 23∼40% respectively.

  • This paper studies the effects of intake port configuration on the swirl that is key parameter in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on fuel air mixing, combustion and emissions. To investigate the swirl flow generated by various intake ports, steady state flow tests were conducted to evaluate the swirl. Helical port geometry, SCV shape and bypass were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed to choose the optimal port shape that would generate a high swirl ratio efficiently. The results revealed that a key factor in generating a high swirl ratio was to suitably control the direction of the intake air flow passing through the valve seat. For these purposes, we changed the distance of helical and tangential port as well as installed bypass near the valve seat and the effects of intake port geometry on in-cylinder flow field were visualized by a laser sheet visualization method. From the experimental results, we found that the swirl ratio and mass flow rate had a trade off relation. In addition, the result indicates that the bypass is a effective method to increase the swirl ratio without sacrificing mass flow rate.

  • Recently, HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a 4-valve small diesel cylinder head with a tangential and helical intake port. The flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate(Cf), swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (ms) were measured in the steady flow test rig using the impulse swirl meter and the analysis of in-cylinder flow field was conducted by experiment using the PIV and calculation using the commercial CFD code. As the results from steady flow test indicate, the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is increased over 13% than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased approximately 15%. From in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform near the TDC. In addition, the results of the calculation are good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Experimental tests have been done with swirl injector and helical grain configuration to increase the regression rate of hybrid rocket solid fuel. Two types of injector were designed to evaluate the swirl effect of oxidizer stream on the increase in the regression rate. Results showed Type II injector with swirl number of 3.61 induced the better regression rate than Type I injector. Meanwhile, fuels with two different pitch number of 6 and 100 were used to analyzes the flow characteristics on the enhancement of regression rate. Test with fuels of pitch 6 showed better increase in the regression rate than in the pitch 100 when no swirler was imposed. This is due to the generation of strong turbulences in the oxidizer stream along the pitch 6 configuration. However, the regression rate could be increased further in the fuel with pitch 100 than with pitch 6 when swirl flow was imposed by Type II injector. This result implied that the fuel with pitch 100 could take a role of sustainer of the imposed swirl by swirler II instead of turbulence generator.

  • A magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) seawater propulsion thruster has been proposed to reduce propeller noise, propeller pitting, and vessel vibration originated from the propeller cavitation. The MHD thruster was also focused to overcome the limitation of propulsion velocity for the special purpose of marine ships. The research trends and key technologies in the worldwide leading countries are reviewed for the development of MHD propulsion thrusters in Korea. A small performance test device was developed firstly with a conventional solenoid magnet of ≤0.6 Tesla and a helical-type cylindrical duct(inner diameter of 5 cm) of thruster. The artificial seawater was fabricated by a salt solution including a conductivity of 5~6 S/m. The measured flow velocity of artificial seawater in the test device was 0.03~0.42 m/s (0.06~0.84 Knot) with a magnetic field strength of 0.6 Tesla and the applied currents of 10~80 A including the change of anode materials. It was found that the flow direction of seawater was reversed by the directional change of applied current in the solenoid magnet.

  • Laminar and turbulent boundary layers on a rotating sector and a helical blade are calculated by differential method. The estimation of three dimensional viscous flows provide quite useful informations for the design of propellers and turbo-machinery. A general method of calculation is presented in this paper. Calculated laminar boundary layer on a sector shows smooth development of flows from Blasius' solution at the leading edge to von Karman's solution of a rotating disk at the down-stream. Eddy viscosity model is adopted for the calculation of turbulent flows. Turbulent flows on a rotating blade show similar characters as laminar flows. But cross-flow angle of turbulent flows are reduced in comparison with laminar boundary layers. Effects of rotation make flow structures significantly different from two-dimensional flows. In the range of Reynolds number of model scale propellers, large portion of the blade are still in the transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Therefore viscous flow pattern might be quite different on the blade of model propeller. The present method of calculation is to be useful for the research of scale effects, cavitation, and roughness effects of propeller blades.

  • In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of the blades of a helical-type vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT) have been investigated. For this purpose, a 100-W helical-type vertical axis wind turbine was designed using a design formulae, and a 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed considering wind tunnel test conditions. Through the results of the analysis, the aerodynamic power output and flow characteristics of a helical blade were confirmed. In order to validate the aerodynamic power output obtained through the analysis, a wind tunnel test was performed by using a full-scale helical-type vertical axis wind turbine. The 3D analysis technique was validated by comparing its results with those obtained from the wind tunnel test.
