The content of hazardous heavy metal of materials used in playground facility for children was investigated using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analyses, In order to examine the content of hazardous heavy metals according to the material color, four colors, i.e., green, red, yellow and blue, were categorized on the materials used. The highest lead content is observed in the yellow plastic samples. The yellow samples with relatively high lead content show that the chrome content is also high. This can explained that lead chromate, so-called chromium yellow, is normally used as a main pigment to express the yellow color. Therefore, it is concluded that hazardous heavy metal detected in the materials of playground facility for children is due to the pigments used for coloring. Based on above findings, the relationship between the color of materials used in playground facility for children and the content of hazardous heavy metal is discussed.
This study was aimed ultimately to develop an adsorption process treating heavy metal wastewater by utilizing activated carbon using flyash. The affecting factors in adsorption process on heavy metal by flyash adhesion-activated carbon are s follows. Factors such as pH, and quality of activated carbon, and reaction time made batch adsorption isotherm described adsorption capacity was made use of the investigation to evaluate adsorptive possibility of heavy metal. As the results of this study, H ion has influence on adsorption of heavy metal if pH is low. As reaction time is transformed, factors such as optimum reaction time is taken into consideration an adsorptive process of heavy metal because an adsorption and a reduction process occur. Adsorption isotherm of adhesion-activated carbon was generally obeyed to Freundlich formular than Langmuir formular and Freundlich constant, l/n were obtained in the range of 0.1~0.5.
Biosorption characteristics were investigated to discuss the use of agar entrapped Spirulina to remove of heavy metal ions from polluted waters. Agar immobilized algae were used as bioadsorbent in continuous reactor for heavy metal ions removal. The process solution contains Pb, Cu, and Cd as single ion and binary ions. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions by agar immobilized Spirulina, the adsorption reached within 1hr and observed diffusion limitation differed from the free algal cell adsorption. The optimum pH for the adsorption of heavy metals was 4.5 but the influence of pH decreased less than that of free algal cell. Also, the adsorption characteristics of single heavy metal ions with agar immobilized Spirulina fitted the BET isotherm. Both of experiments of free algal cell and agar immobilized algae showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than binary ions solutions. The experimental results in the packed column with agar immobilized algae were over 90% of removal efficiency for the Pb, Cu, and Cd in single ion solutions.
The risk assessment for heavy metal pollutions were analyzed by using statistical techniques including correlation and cluster analyses. The contamination data in this investigation obtained were from the Chungcheongnam-do abandoned mines. The descriptive statistical analysis showed that the values of Pb and Zn were relatively higher than other heavy metal values. The detection of heavy metals by distance from abandoned mines within 1,000m were mostly As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. It was noted, especially, that Zn was even detected at 4,000m The results of coefficient correlation showed that Zn to Cd was the highest values. The cluster and dendogram analyses were generated. The results showed the two clear groups by heavy metal characteristics.
The present work investigates the possible use of fly ash for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were conducted and the influences of metal concentration, pH, and fly ash concentration were investigated. Heavy metals used in these studies were lead and zinc. Adsorption studies were done over a range of pH values (3~10) at $25^{\circ}C$ and heavy metal concentrations of 10~400 mg/L using fly ash concentrations of 10 and 20 g/L. Experiments were also conducted without fly ash to determine the extent of heavy metal removal by precipitation. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were performed and adsorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The results of these studies indicate that 리y ash can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals in the aqueous solutions, yet the degree of removal depends on the pH.
Pozzolanic-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) is an effective and economic remediation technology to immobilize heavy metals in contaminated soils. In this study, quick lime (CaO) was used to immobilize cadmium and zinc present in waste mine contaminated clayey sand soils. Addition of 5% quicklime to the contaminated soils effectively reduced heavy metal leachability after 2 bed volume operation below the drinking water regulatory limits. Lime addition was revealed to increase the immobilization for all heavy metals in tested pH ranges, so it could be an optimal choice for short-term remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. The mass balances for these column tests show metal reduction of 92% for Cd and 87% for Zn of total resolved mass in case of 5% lime application.

Although many metals contaminated sediment from coastal area contain both anionic and cationic heavy metals, the current remediation technologies are not effective for stabilize heavy metals of both anionic and cationic elements from contaminated coastal region. the present work investigated the efficiency and mechanism of immobilization of Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb and Cd metal solutions in modified zeolite based biostimulant ball. Biostimulant ball containing acetate, nitrate and sulphate which are enhance the activity of marine microorganisms and it can act as electron donors and electron acceptors. Modified zeolite and chelating agent is greatly enhance the metal stabilization due to increased immobility of the analysed metals. The XRD, FT-IR and SEM of modified zeolite which cheating agents containing heavy metals were investigated. The results indicated that heavy metals could be effectively immobilized in modified zeolite and chelating agents in BSB added sediment. The immobilization of heavy metals in modified zeolite and chelating agents along with BSB could be due to stabilize of heavy metal cations. Immobilization of heavy metals using BSB with modified zeolite and chelating agent has lower cost effect and enhance the sediment quality.
The response of the freshwater microalga, Chlorella vulgaris, to heavy metal stress was examined based on chlorophyll fluorescence analysis to assess the toxic effects of heavy metals in freshwater ecosystems. When toxic effects were analyzed using regular chlorophyll fluorescence analysis, photosystem II activity($F_v/F_m$) decreased significantly when exposed to $Cu^{2+}$ and $Hg^{2+}$ for 12 h, and decreased in the order of $Hg^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Ni^{2+}$ when exposed for 24h. The effective photochemical quantum yield(${\phi}{\prime}_{PSII}$), chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio($R_{Fd}$), minimal fluorescence yield($F_o$), and non-photochemical quenching(NPQ), but not photochemical quenching(qP), responded sensitively to $Hg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$. These results suggest that $F_v/F_m$, as well as ${\phi}{\prime}_{PSII}$, $R_{Fd}$, $F_o$, and NPQ could be used to assess the effects of heavy metal ions in freshwater ecosystems. However, because many types of heavy metal ions and toxic compounds co-occur under natural conditions, it is difficult to assess heavy metal toxicity in freshwater ecosystems. When Chlorella was exposed to heavy metal ions for 12 or 24h, $F_v/F_m$ and maximal fluorescence yield($F_m$) changed in response to $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ based on image analysis. However, assessing quantitatively the toxic effects of several heavy metal ions is challenging.

The leaching behavior of heavy metal ions with pH and colloid/interface property was analyzed by ICP and SEM. The heavy metals in EAF dust are 'amphoteric metal' and the heavy metal ions leached a little at pH 10. And the leaching concentrations of heavy metals at pH 12 were higher than the that at pH 8. The leaching concentrations of heavy metal ion were decreased with adding the clay to the EAF dust. Especially, the leaching concentrations of heavy metal ion were effectively decreased at pH 12. The observation of colloid/interface properties shows that the soluble silicon hydroxide from clay at pH 12 was precipitated at the surface of the heavy metal and clay particles. This silicon hydroxide precipitates were named the PSHP. The leaching concentrations of heavy metal ion were effectively decreased by the formation of PSHP when adding the clay to the EAF dust and controlling the pH of the slurry at 12.
The removal performances of divalent heavy metal ions ($Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$) were studied using the Na-P1 zeolite synthesized from Jeju scoria in the batch and continuous fixed column reactor. The uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite decreased in the order of $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu2^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Sr^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ based on the selectivity of each ion to ionic exchange site of Na-P1 zeolite for single and mixed solutions in batch or continuous fixed column reactor. For mixed solution, each heavy metal ion uptake was lower than that in single solution, and especially the uptake for $Mn^{2+}$ decreased greatly. In batch reactor, the uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite were described by Freundlich or Langmuir equation, but they followed the former better than the latter. In continuous fixed column reactor, the maximum ion exchange capacity obtained for each of heavy metal ions, was about 90----- of that in batch reactor. The uptakes of heavy metal ions by synthetic Na-P1 zeolite increased with the increase of initial heavy metal concentration and solution pH, and the decrease of the amount and particle size of synthetic zeolite.
