  • In this study, heat transfer characteristics of vertical fixed bed with air flowing through were experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted for cases where heat was transfer steady state conditions from an immersed cylindrical heated to the surrounding fixed ved of steel balls. Based on the experimental data, the optimum conditions for heat transfer augmentation have been determined and shows in empirical forms. For the same power loss, comparison of heat transfer effect between the fixed bed and single phase forced convection device indicates that both miniaturization of heat exchange device and heat transfer augmentation at low flow velocity are possible by application of the fixed bed to heat exchangers. The present results could provide a useful design information for the heat exchangers where fixed beds are used.

  • In the present study, the heat transfer performance on the heat recovery ventilator with rotary disk were experimentally investigated. The temperature of entrance and exit of the heat recovery ventilator, air flow distribution of high temperature air and low temperature air, heat flux and the overall heat transfer coefficients are estimated from the experimental results. As the number of revolution of rotary disk, the air flow distribution increase, heat flux and overall heat transfer coefficients increase.

  • This paper deals with the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R-290 (Propane), R-600a (Iso-butane) and R-1270 (Propylene) as an environment friendly refrigerant and R-22 as a HCFC's refrigerant for condensing. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. Condensing heat transfer and pressure drop measurements were Peformed for 12.70 mm micro-fin tube and compared with the results in smooth tube. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to those of R-22 and the maximum increasing rate of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-600a. The average condensing heat transfer coefficients in hydrocarbon refrigerants showed 20 to 28% higher values than those of R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have a higher pressure drop than that of R-22 with respect to refrigerant qualify and mass flux. Also, the condensing heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of working fluids in smooth and micro-fin tube were compared. The heat transfer enhancement factor (EF) between smooth and micro-fin tube varied from 2.2 to 2.6 in all experimental conditions.

  • Heat transfer coefficient were measured and new correlations were developed for two-phase heat transfer in a horizontal pipe for different patterns. Flow patterns were observed in a transparent circular pipe (2.54 cm I. D. and L/D=96) using an air/water mixture. Visual identification of the flow patterns was supplemented with photographic data and the results were plotted on the flow regime map proposed by Taitel and Dukler and agreed quite well with each other. A two-phase heat transfer experimental setup was built for this study and a total of 150 two-phase heat transfer data with different flow patterns were obtained under a uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. For these data, the superficial Reynolds number ranged from 640 to 35,500 for the liquid and from 540 to 21,200 for the gas. Our previously developed robust two-phase heat transfer correlation for a vertical pipe with modified constants predicted the horizontal pipe air-water heat transfer experimental data with good accuracy. Overall the proposed correlations predicted the data with a mean deviation of 1.0% and an rms deviation of 12%.

  • To understand EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement, EHD effects on R-113 nucleate boiling heat transfer in a non-uniform electric field were investigated. The pool boiling heat transfer and the dynamic behavior of bubbles in d.c./a.c. electric fields under a saturated or subcooled boiling were studied by using a plate-wire electrode and a high speed camera. From the pool boiling heat transfer study, the shift of the pool boiling curve, the increase of the heat transfer and the delay of ONB and CHF points to higher heat fluxes were observed. From the dynamic behavior of bubbles, it was observed that bubbles departed away from the whole surface of the heated wire in radial direction due to EHD effects by a nonuniform electric field. With increasing applied voltages, the bubble size decreased and the active nucleation site and the departure number of bubbles showed the different trend. The present study indicates that the EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer is closely connection with the dynamic behavior of bubbles and the secondary flow induced near the heated surface. Therefore, the basic studies on the bubble behavior such as bubble frequency, bubble diameter, bubble velocity and flow characteristics are necessary for complete understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the boiling heat transfer using an electric field.

  • CFC-12, which has been used most widely in automobile air conditioners and household refrigerators is scheduled to be phased out soon because of its high ozone depletion potential. Now HFC-134a is suggested as an alternative refrigerant for CFC-12. In this Study, we intended to investigate how PAG oil influence evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil influences evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil in the horizontal miro-fin evaporation tube. Experiments were conducted under the flowing est conditions : mass velocity 86-250kg/$m^2$s, heat flux 5-30 ㎾/$m^2$, oil concentration 0-21 wt.% and saturation temperature 5$^{\circ}C$. Local evaporation heat transfer coefficients were found to be higher at the top, side and bottom of the tube in this order. Average heat transfer coefficients turned out to increase with oil concentration increment up to 3 wt.% oil concentration, whereas heat transfer coefficients gradually decreased over 3 wt.% oil concentration, because of oil-rich liquid film was formed on the heat transfer surface. Flow patterns were rapidly transitioned to annular regimes up to 3 wt.% oil concentration. In case of pure refrigerant, measured heat transfer coefficients in the experiments were similar to those of Kandlikar's correlation.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the condensation heat transfer characteristics for R22 and its alternatives, R407C (R32/125/134a, 23/25/52wt%) and R410A (R32/125, 50/50wt%). A concentric tube heat exchanger was made to conduct condensation heat transfer tests. Mass flux and saturation temperature of refrigerants at the test section inlet were varied to get the corresponding heat transfer coefficients. Serial and parallel input of secondary fluid (water) were applied to the test subsections. Compared with existing correlations of condensation heat transfer, experimental heat transfer coefficients obtained in this study were generally higher than the predicted values, and mean absolute deviations from several correlations were shown. Wall subcooling was introduced to get a new correlation for condensation heat transfer coefficients by modifying Shah's equation. The RMS deviation of the measured heat transfer coefficients from the new correlation in this study for R22 is 9.9% and that for R407C and R410A are 10.2% and 14.6%, respectively.

  • This study experimentally investigates effect of boiling heat transfer when ultrasonic vibration was applied. Under the wall temperature condition, temperature distribution in a cavity was measured during the boiling process and heat transfer coefficient of convection, sub-tooled boiling and saturated boiling states were measured with and without ultrasonic vibration, respectively. Also, the profiles of the pressure distribution in acoustic field measured by a hydrophone were compared with the augmentation ratios of heat transfer calculated by local heat transfer coefficient. Result of this study, heat transfer coefficient and augmentation ratio of heat transfer is higher with ultrasonic waves than without one. Especially, augmentation ratio of heat transfer is more increased the convection state than sub-cooled boiling and saturated boiling states. Acoustic pressure is relatively higher near ultrasonic transducer than other points where is no installed it and affects the augmentation ratio of heat transfer.

  • The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. A complex flow structure occurs in the cooling passage with rib turbulators which promote heat transfer on the wall. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. A numerical computation is performed using a commercial code to calculate the flow structures and experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. A square channel (50 mm $\times$ 50 mm) with rectangular ribs (4 mm $\times$ 5 mm) is used fur the stationary duct test. The experiments focus on the effects of rib arrangements and gap positions in the discrete ribs on the heat/mass transfer on the duct wall. The rib angle of attack is 60°and the rib-to-rib pitch is 32 mm, that is 8 times of the rib height. With the inclined rib angle of attack (60°), the parallel rib arrangements make a pair of counter rotating secondary flows in the cross section, but the cross rib arrangements make a single large secondary flow including a small secondary vortex. These secondary flow patterns affect significantly the heat/mass transfer on the ribbed wall. The heat/mass transfer in the parallel arrangements is 1.5 ∼2 times higher than that in the cross arrangements. However, the shifted rib arrangements change little the heat/mass transfer from the inline rib arrangements. The gap position in the discrete rib affects significantly the heat/mass transfer because a strong flow acceleration occurs locally through the gap.

  • The interaction of natural convection and radiation heat transfer in a two dimensional square enclosure containing absorbing, emitting and linear anisotropically scattering gray medium is numerically analyzed. P-1 and P-3 approximation is introduced to calculate radiation heat transfer. The effects of scattering albedo, wall emissivity, scattering anisotropy, and optical thickness on the characteristics of the flow and temperature field and heat transfer are investigated. Temperature and velocity profiles depend a great deal on the scattering albedo, and the importance of this effect increases with decrease in albelo. Planck number is another important parameter in radiation heat transfer. The increase in scattering albedo increases convection heat transfer and decreases radiation heat transfer at hot wall. However, the increase in scattering albedo decreases both convection and radiation heat transfer at cold wall. The increase in optical thickness decreases radiation heat transfer. The scattering anisotropy has important effects on the radiation heat transfer only. The highly forward scattering leads to an increase of radiation heat transfer whereas the highly backward scattering leads to an decrease of radiation heat transfer. The effect of scattering anisotropy decreases when reducing the wall emissivity.
