This paper suggests the dehydration and RDF(Refuse Derived Fuel) production of organic sludge, livestock manure and sewerage sludge causing environmental problems, with hydrothermal pre-treatment process. The renewable technology from the organic wastes must involve short treatment time required, reusable energy source, anti-odor and viruses, low cost for the treatment, and well-fertilization. The hydrothermal pre-treatment process promotes to evaporate moisture in the sludge after being shortly treated in a reactor, which is supplied steam and heat by an external boiler, due to the pressure with steam breaks the cell walls of the sludge, so this process removes the internal moisture of the cell. Then, the treated sludge(solid-state) is mixed with waste vinyls called RDF(6,706kcal/kg).

This paper investigates the dehydration and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) production of organic wastes, livestock manure and sewerage sludge with pressurized hydrothermal treatment process. The renewable technology for the organic wastes must involve short treatment time required, reusable energy source, anti-odor and viruses, low cost for the treatment, and well-fertilization. The pressurized hydrothermal treatment process promotes to evaporate moisture in the waste after being shortly treated in a reactor, which uses steam and heat supplied by an external boiler. By the pressurized steam, the cell walls of the waste break and effectively release the internal moisture. Then, the dried waste can be mixed with waste vinyls to produce RDF with a higher heating value as high as 6,700 kcal/kg.
The changes in molecular size distribution of rice starch during extrusion cooking and simple heating of rice flour were compared and the effect of subsequent enzyme treatment on the molecular size was examined. A single-screw extruder was used with varing feed moisture contents ($17{\sim}29%$) and barrel temperatures ($100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$). An aluminium capsule immersed in oil bath ($100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$) was used for the simple heat treatment of rice flour. In case of extrusion cooking the mechanical energy input varied sharply at around 23% moisture content of the feed. At the feed moisture content of $17{\sim}23%$, a significant molecular size reduction of rice starch was observed by the gel permeation chromatography using Sephacryl S-1000 gel. The intact starch molecules of above $4{\times}10^{7}$ dalton were largely disintergrated by extrusion cooking of rice flour containing the moisture content less than 23%. It was mostly degraded further into the molecules having below $5{\times}10^{6}$ dalton by ${\alpha}-amylase$ treatment. But at the feed moisture content above 26% the starch did not show molecular size reduction either by extrusion cooking or by subsequent enzyme treatment. On the contrary little changes in molecular size of starch was occured by simple heating of rice flour containing the moisture less than 20%. but slight size reduction was observed at the moisture content above 23%, where the effect of ${\alpha}-amylase$ was also observed.

The material properties of Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) were evaluated according to heat treatment conditions. The special focus was made on the color control of cedar wood by heat treatment. The difference of color between sapwood and heartwood could be reduced by heat treatment at a temperature above $170^{\circ}C$. Long heating time was more effective in reducing the difference. The Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) of heat-treated wood was as low as 50 percent. The result obviously indicates that heat-treated wood is more dimensionally stable in the change of moisture condition than the control. The heat-treated wood was also effective in increasing the durability against wood rotting fungi. However, more study is required to develop heat treatment as an environmentally-friendly technology for wood preservation without chemical. The mechanical properties of heat-treated wood showed relatively higher performance than the control in general. Meanwhile the dramatic decrease in impact bending stress due to the loss of ductility may limit uses of heat-treated wood in certain cases. There were no significant changes in microscopic structure which may cause changes in mechanical properties. Further study on the chemical analysis of heat-treated wood is needed to scrutinize the causes of changes of material properties.

This study was carried out to evaluate quantitatively some properties (density, equilibrium moisture content, shrinkage, water vapor adsorption, water absorptivity, compressive strength, bending strength, hardness and decay resistance) of Larix kaempferi lumber which was heat-treated by hot air and has been used commercially in Korea. Equilibrium moisture content of the heat-treated wood was decreased with increase of hydrophobicity. Dimensional stability of the wood was improved with decrease of shrinkage, water vapor adsorption and free water absorptivity. Also, with the thermo-chemical changes of wood component and lower equilibrium moisture content, decay resistance and compressive strength of heat-treated wood were increased. But, bending strength and hardness of wood were decreased.
Starch samples of rice and glutinous rice starches were adjusted to 27 % of moisture and heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, respectively. After the treatment, their physicochemical properties were investigated. The granule shapes of all the starches were polygonal and they became slightly bigger in their sizes after the treatment. All their X-ray diffraction patterns were A types. The specific gravity of the starches decreased to 1.03-1.09 by the treatment. The water binding capacity of rice starches increased, while that of glutinous counterparts slightly decreased. Almost no change in the amount of amylose included was found. Swelling power and solubility were increased with the increase of temperature. At a certain temperature, however, the solubility of the treated starches increased when the swelling power decreased. The initial gelatinization temperatures of Akkibare, Yongmun, and Taebaek starches were $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ but those of glutinous rice starch and U.S.A. rice starch were $55{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ and $70{\sim}75^{\circ}C$, respectively, as measured by transmittance. The gelatinization temperature of the treated starches was higher than that of the untreated starches.
The effects of heat-moisture treatment (HMT) on the functional properties of high amylose rice starches (HARSes) purified from Korean rice varieties (A-type Goami and Singil and B-type Dodamssal and Goami2) were investigated. HMT was accomplished with moisture contents of 18 and 27% and heated at 100℃ for 16 h. While the amylose content, swelling power and solubility decreased after HMT, the water binding capacity and resistant starch (RS) content increased with increasing moisture content after HMT. The X-ray diffraction patterns of all HARSes did not change after HMT, but a decrease in the intensity of peak at 2θ=5° was observed in B-type HMT HARSes. While the starch granules aggregated after HMT, their shape and size remained unchanged. B-type HARSes exhibited higher gelatinization temperatures and lower pasting viscosities than A-type HARSes following HMT. The results, thus, suggest that while the crystalline intensity of B-type Dodamssal and Goami2 rice starches did not change after HMT, the RS content, water binding capacity, and pasting temperatures of all HARSes increased with increasing moisture content after HMT.
In the past, a very popular method for reducing the corrosion on zinc involved the use of chemical conversion layer coatings based on $Cr^{+6}$. However, there is an important problem with using chromium salts as a result of restrictive environmental protection legislation. This study investigated the optimum condition for galvanized steel using an organic/inorganic solution with a Ti composition. In the case of a fixed heat treatment time, the corrosion resistance values of LR-0727(1) and LR-0727(2) were improved as the heat treatment temperature increased, and the optimum minimum temperature decreased with the heat treatment time. At the optimum heat treatment condition of two coating solutions, the heat treatment time of the LR-0727(1) solution was shorter than LR-0727(2) for the same heat treatment temperature. LR-0727(1) coated specimens did not show desquamation, and all of the specimens showed a good adhesive property. In contrast, in the case of the LR-0727(2) coated specimens, desquamation arose. Therefore, the adhesive property of LR-0727(1) was superior to that of LR-0727(2). The pencil hardness had a 3H average for all of the coating solutions and heat treatment conditions. In the case of a corrosion resistance test with boiling water, the coated specimens of LR-0727(1) were discolored, but LR-0727(2) was not. Finally, LR-0727(1) was more moisture proof than LR-0727(2).

Recently, yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) is getting attention in Korea due to the fast growing and high yield and quality of lumber. But, it is thought that the color difference between heartwood and sapwood may restrict the practical use of it. This study was aimed to enhance the value of yellow poplar lumber by the color control using high temperature heat-treatment, which had been tried for domestic cedar (Kim et al., 2009). The material properties including surface color of yellow poplar lumber were evaluated according to heat treatment conditions. The difference of color between sapwood and heartwood could be reduced by heat treatment at a temperature about $200^{\circ}C$. Long heating time was more effective in reducing the difference. The Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) of heat-treated wood was as low as 50 percent of the control. The result obviously indicates that heat-treated wood is more dimensionally stable in the change of moisture condition. The durability against wood rotting fungi also increased by the heat-treated, but it was not so effective as the case of cedar. The changes of mechanical properties of heat-treated yellow poplar were very similar to that of heat-treated cedar. In order to develop new use of heat-treated yellow poplar, the changes of mechanical properties should be considered. There were no significant changes in microscopic structure which may cause changes in mechanical properties. Further study of heat-treated wood is needed to scrutinize the causes of changes of material properties.
This study was conducted to understand the quality characteristics of salt fermented anchovies with heat treatment by measuring their chemical compositions. The heat-treated and non-heat treated salt fermented anchovies contained, respectively, 63.21 and 66.51% of moisture, 2.24 and 2.12% of total nitrogen (TN), and 1,537 and 1,520 mg/100 g of amino nitrogen (AN). In addition, heat-treated and non-heat-treated salt fermented anchovies contained 127 and 134 mg/100 g of volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), respectively. Moreover, measured the microbial level of heat-treated and non-heat-treated salt fermented anchovies was $2.58{\times}10^4$ and $3.61{\times}10^2$ CFU/mL, respectively. Also, the heat-treated and non-heat-treated salt fermented anchovies 3.65 and 0.30 units of protease activities, respectively. The total free amino acid contents in heat-treated and non-heat-treated salt fermented anchovies was 4,964 and 6,638 mg/100 g, respectively. The major free amino acid were glutamic acid, leucine, lysine, alanine, valine, isoleucine. Our results provide the characteristics of salt fermented anchovies and encourage their application for the food industry and cooking.
