  • This study was investigated the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of internally hardened ductile cast iron roll. The following conclusions were obtained. Some of the graphite was decreased and a bainite was produced by heat treatment. It decreased due to the decomposition of some of the cementite precipitated in the as-cast by heat treatment, but there was no significant change when it reached a certain depth. Hardness increased due to formation of bainite by heat treatment. On the surface, the hardness decreased due to the decrease in the amount of transformation of cementite into bainite, but there was no change beyond a certain depth.

  • Modeling of vibrations of a rotating pendulum with working shape memory alloy rod has been performed in the frames of a microstructural model taking into account the latent heat release, absorption and the heat exchange during direct and reverse martensitic transformation. It has been shown that the influence of the latent heat, the rate of preliminary deviation of the pendulum from the equilibrium, the rate of heating and cooling can have a significant impact on the vibrations and damping characteristics of the system.

  • Zr-xNb alloys (x = 0.2, 0.8, 1.5 wt.%) were prepared to study the characteristics of the phase transformation in Zr-Nb system. The samples were heat treated at ${\beta}$-temperature ($1020^{\circ}C$) for 20 min and then cooled with different cooling rate. The microstructures of the specimens having the same compositions were changed with cooling rate and Nb content. The Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten structure was observed on the furnace-cooled sample. The relationship between ${\alpha}$-Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten and ${\beta}$-phase was the {0001}${\alpha}$//{110}${\beta}$, <11$\bar{2}$0>//<111>. The ${\beta}$-phase in Widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten structure of Zr-Nb alloys containing Nb more than solubility limit was identified as ${\beta}_{Zr}$ phase which was a stable phase at high temperature. In the water quenched samples, two kinds of martensite structures were observed depending on the Nb-concentration. The lath martensite was formed in Zr-0.2, 0.8 wt.% Nb alloys and the plate martensite having twins was formed in Zr-1.5 wt.% Nb alloy.

  • This research was examined the effect of intercritical heat treatment on the mechanical Properties and retained austenite formation in 0.1C-6.5Mn steels for the development of a high strength high ductility steel. using of transformation induced plasticity due to retained austenite. The stability of retained austenite is very important for the good ductility and it depend on diffusion of carbon and manganese during reverse transformation. It is effective to heat treat at$ 645^{\circ}C$ in order to obtain over 30 vol.% of retained austenite. However, it is more desirable to heat treat at $620^{\circ}C$, considering the volume fraction and mechanical stability of retained austenite. The strength-elongation combination in cold rolled steel sheets after reverse transformed at $620^{\circ}C$ for 1hr was about 4000k9/mm7, but it decreased rapidly with increasing holding time at high temperature due to the decrease of ductility. The addition of 1.1%Si in 0.14C-6.5Mn TRIP steel does not improve the mechanical properties and retained austenite formation.

  • The effects of chemical composition and thermal cycling on the martensitic transformation characteristics in Cu-rich, equiatomic and Zr-rich CuZr binary alloys have been studied by calorimetry. Only martensite could be indentified in equiatomic $Cu_{49.9}Zr_{50.1}$ alloy, while $Cu_{10}Zr_7$ and $CuZr_2$ intermetallic compounds as well as martensite were formed by rapid cooling from the melts in Cu-rich $Cu_{52.2}Zr_{47.5}$ alloy and Zr-rich $Cu_{48.4}Zr_{51.6}$ alloy, respectively. The $M_s$ temperature of $Cu_{49.9}Zr_{50.1}$ was $156^{\circ}C$ but those of $Cu_{52.5}Zr_{47.5}$ and $Cu_{48.4}Zr_{51.6}$ alloys, being $109^{\circ}C$ and $138^{\circ}C$, were lower than that of equiatomic $Cu_{49.9}Zr_{50.1}$ alloy. In all the alloys, the $M_s$ temperature has fallen but the $A_s$ temperature has risen, resulting in widening of the transformation hysteresis with thermal cycling. The anomalous characteristics in the transformation temperature are due to the presence of the intermetallic compounds i.e. $Cu_{10}Zr_7$ and $CuZr_2$ formed by an eutectoid reaction during thermal cycling in the temperature range between $-100^{\circ}C$ < $T_c$ < $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The distribution of the second phase, the change of transformation temperature and mechanical properties with thermomechanical treatment conditions were investigated by metallography, calorimetry, EDS, tensile test and fractography in a Cu-Al-Ni-Ti-Mn alloy. The cast structure revealed Ti-rich precipitates($X_L$ phase) between dendrite arms, which have been identified as $(Cu,Ni)_2TiAl$ intermetallic compounds. By homogenizing above $900^{\circ}C$, the $X_L$ phase was melted in the matrix, while the Xs phase was precipitated in matrix and the volume fraction of it was increased. When hot-rolled specimen was betatized below $750^{\circ}C$, recrystallization could not be observed. However, the specimen betatized above $800^{\circ}C$ was recrystallized and the grain size was about $50{\mu}m$, while Xs phase was precipitated in matrix. With raising betatizing temperature, $M_s$ and $A_s$ temperatures were fallen and transformation hysteresis became larger. The strain of the specimen betatized at $800^{\circ}C$ was 8.2% as maximum value. The maximum shape recovery rate could be obtained in the specimen betatized at $800^{\circ}C$ but it was decreased due to the presence of Xs phase with increasing betatizing temperature.

  • Heat treatment is an important step for tool manufacture, but unavoidably generates dimensional distortion. This study investigated the continuous dimensional change and the anisotropic behavior of STD11 tool steel during austenitizing and tempering heat treatment especially using quenching dilatometer. Dilatometric results represented that the dimensional change along longitudinal direction was larger than that along transverse direction. Anisotropic phase transformation strain was produced in forged STD11 tool steel during heat treatment. Anisotropic dimensional change increased with increasing austenitizing temperature. After tempering, anisotropic distortion was partially reduced. FactSage thermodynamic equilibrium phase simulation and microstructural observation (FE-SEM, TEM) showed that large ($7{\sim}80{\mu}m$) elongated $M_7C_3$ carbides could be formed along rolling direction. The resolution of elongated carbides during austenitizing was found to be related with the change of martensite transformation temperature after heat treatment. Anisotropic size change of STD11 tool steel was mainly attributed to large elongated carbides produced during rolling process. Using dilatometric and metallographic examination, the possible mechanism of the anisotropic size change was also discussed.

  • Effects of retained austenite contents on ductility of medium carbon spring steels according to steel alloy compositions and heat treatment conditions were studied. Contents of retained austenite varied with steel compositions and heat treatment conditions, and some retained austenite were found to transform to martensite on stress. Reduction of area (RA) increased with contents of retained austenite, then saturated through its maximum, and subsequently decreased. Increase in RA with retained austenite contents could be due to crack blunting effect by retained austenite on stress, however, more contents of martensite transformed from retained austenite in its higher contents could cause decrease in RA.

  • The object of this research is to estimate the hardenability of quenched carbon steels AISI 1050. The equation of transient heat conduction was analyzed to derive cooling curve by finite element method. The effects of temperature on physical properties, metallic structures and the latent heat by phase transformation were considered. A good agreement was found between analytical and experimental results to show that the proposed numerical procedure was reliable. This procedure could be used as the detabase for optimal condition of heat treatment cycle.

  • Heat treatment with carburized quenching process is widely used for automotive helical gear to improve its surface properties of hardness and strength. However, the gear can be deformed with the process over the allowable tolerance, which possibly makes noise, vibration and heat problems in operation. In this study, deformation of helical gear during heat treatment of carburized quenching was analyzed with a numerical method, incorporating coupled calculations of thermal conduction, carbon diffusion, phase transformation and thermal stresses. With the analysis, the effect of coolant temperature in quenching on the deformation was investigated. The result of the analysis revealed that the higher the coolant temperature became, the more change of helix angle and the more compressive stresses in the surface generated, because of delayed generation of martensite in the part.
