  • This paper investigates coupled thermal, mechanical and hydraulic phenomena in deep rock mass especially for underground heat storage system. Firstly, concepts of underground heat storage were presented and coupling phenomena in this area were illustrated. In order to understand the basic mechanism of thermal, hydraulic and deformation behavior in rock cavern disturbed by thermal gradient about 10$0^{\circ}C$, various numerical experiments were conducted using several codes. The study involves the behavior of fractured rock mass including rock joint. In spite of the limitation of codes modelling fully coupled effects, these codes could be applied in analysis of underground heat storage. The heat loss in rock mass, which is a major factor in heat storage, is insignificant in all results.

  • We prepared polymer-PCM gels such as prepared frozen gel from polypropylene and n-Paraffin for thermal storage and release materials, their basic properties and possible applications especially in latent heat storage. The preparation methods are used to melting method and absorption method respectively. The composition and properties of prepared frozen gels from polypropylene and n-Paraffin were observed by DSC, FT-IR spectra, ARES and Elemental analysis. We can prepare frozen gels in different temperature for latent heat storage materials as controlling composition of phase change material as well as using different incorporating phase change materials. These frozen gels can be used to latent heat storage materials for several applications.

  • Thermal performance of a solar heating plastic greenhouse designed for a hydroponic system was studied. The system was constructed with the air-water heat exchanger and thermal storage tank that were combined with hydroponic water beds. Experiments were carried out to investigate the daily average heat stored and released in thermal storage tank, average solar energy collection efficiency, average coefficient of performance, average oil reduction factor of thermal storage system, and the heat transfer coefficient during the nighttime in plastic greenhouse. The results obtained in the present study are summarized as follows. 1. Daily average heat stored in thermal storage tank and released from the thermal storage tank was 1,259 and $797KJ/m^2$ day, respectively. 2. The average solar energy collection efficiency of thermal storage tank was 0.125 during the experiment period. And the average coefficient of performance of thermal storage system in plastic greenhouse was 3.6. 3. The average oil reduction factor of thermal storage system and the heat transfer coefficient during the nighttime in plastic greenhouse were found to be 0.52 and $4.3W/m^2\;hr\;^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Heat pump systems are recognized to be heating and cooing systems. In this study, to check the practical application possibility of heat pump systems as low temperature storage systems and get basic data, apples of a long term storage items were stored and performance of low temperature storage and quality changes of apples were evaluated. Cooling coefficient of performance of the system was from 1.1 to 1.3. Although ambient air temperature varied widely from $-13^{\circ}C$ to $29.6^{\circ}C$ during low temperature storage period from January to June, the average temperature of low temperature storage chamber was $1.1^{\circ}C$ at setting temperature of $1.5^{\circ}C$. Sucrose of apples stored by the heat pump decreased from initial sucrose of 15.4% (Brix number) to final sucrose of 14.3%. Weight loss ratio of apples was 9.7% and internal and external view of apples after low temperature storage were very satisfactory with the naked eye.

  • The greenhouse heating system with heat pump and latent heat storage was built for development of simulation model and validation. The computer simulation model for the system to predict temperature of air, soil surface and cover film in the greenhouse were developed and its validity was justified by actual data. From the analysis of experimentally measured and the simulation output, following results were obtained. 1. The expected values of inside air temperature for the greenhouse with a heat pump and a latent heat storage system were very much close to the experimental values at the error range of 1.0$\^{C}$. 2. The expected values of soil surface temperature fur the geenhouse with a heat pump and a latent heat storage system were very much close to the experimental values at the error range of 1.0$\^{C}$. 3. The expected values of thermal energy flow fur the greenhouse with a heat pump and a latent heat storage system were very much close to the experimental values at the error range of 167.2kJ/m$^2$h. 4. Heat lass value of day time was found to be larger than that of night time as much as 1.11 time. 5. At day time. the inside air temperature was shown to be higher than the set point of 7.0$\^{C}$. At night time, the inside air temperature was controlled in order to maintain higher temperatures than the set point.

  • In this paper, the appropriate thermal storage time of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was considered by use of summer measurement values. Two standards of heat extraction rate and criterion function were established as the standard that evaluates appropriateness. When heat extraction rate was a standard, zero hour and seven hours were obtained as appropriate thermal storage time, in the case of evaluation by energy consumption and running cost individually. Also, when criterion function was a standard, the difference between energy consumption and running cost was small, it was because the weight function to room air temperature deviation was much bigger than heat extraction rate.

  • The diminishing of heat leak into cryogenic vessels can prolong the storage time of cryogenic liquid. With the storage of cryogenic liquid reducing, the heat leak decreases, while the actual storage time increases. Regarding to the theoretical analysis, the obtained results seems to be constructive for the cryogenic insulation system applications. This study presents a predictive assessment of heat leak occurring in non-vacuum tanks with a single layer of insulation. A Radial steady-state heat transfer, based on heat conduction equation, is taken into consideration. Graphical results show the thermal performance of the insulation used, they also allow us to choose the appropriate insulation thickness according to the shape and diameter of the storage tank.

  • Heat transfer phenomena in a high-temperature heat storage unit were investigated using molten salts. Carbonate salt, an equimolar mixture of $Li_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$, which melts at $505^{\circ}C$ with a latent heat of 82 cal/g, was selected as the most promising latent heat storage material based on its low cost and excellent thermophysical properties at moderately high temperatures. It was also found that nitrate salts were good candidates of sensible heat storage materials. For the carbonate salt to be utilized commercially, however, several means of enhancing thermal recovery must be explored by promoting heat conduction through the solid salt formed during the heat discharge period. These would be achieved by the additions of aluminum screens and wool, and stainless fins. Finally, experimental results of moving boundary of phase change were well compared with predictied values obtained from the approximate solution.

  • Each country in the world currently concentrates on shifting into clean energy, which can be alternative energy, for global environment protection and solution to the problem of fossil fuel depletion. The Korean government is predicted to develop renewable energy, such as solar power, ground power, and offshore wind power, and to increase their supply ratios by ending the use of coals and nuclear power plants. This study conducted experiments on thermal storage performance of Trombe wall thermal storage materials using solar power and simulations in order to offer baseline data for the development of a hybrid air circulation system for heating that can maximize efficiency by simultaneously using solar and geothermal power. The study results are as follows: (1) In all the specimens with 3m, 5m, and 7m in the length of thermal storage pipe, $5.7^{\circ}C$, $7.8^{\circ}C$, and $10.5^{\circ}C$ rose, respectively, as the thermal storage effect of the specimens attaching insulation film and black tape to the general funnel. They were most excellent in terms of thermal storage effect. (2) As a result of thermal performance evaluation on the II type specimens, II-3 ($7.8^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-4 ($5.3^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-1 ($3.9^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-2 ($2.3^{\circ}C$ rise) was revealed, and thus II-3 (insulation film + black tape) was most effective as shown in the I type. (3) This study analyzed air current and temperature distribution inside of the greenhouse by linking actually measured values and simulation interpretation results through the interpretation of CFD (computational fluid dynamics). As a result, the parts absorbing heat and discharging heat around the thermal storage pipe could be visibly classified, and temperature distribution inside of the greenhouse around the thermal storage pipe could be figured out.
