Rate of rise heat detectors that respond to the heat generated in fire plume and alarm when the temperature reaches a specified point, give a great influences to the loss of life and property according to their reaction sensitivity. In this study, simple equations were derived which can be predicted the response time and temperature of the rate of rise heat detector with the results of hot wind tunnel tests and compartment fire experiments.
The heat rejection to coolant is a dominant factor for building vehicle cooling system such as radiator and cooling fan. Since the vehicle cooling system also has effects on fuel consumption and noise, the study of heat rejection to coolant has been emphasized. However, the study on heat rejection to coolant has been mainly focused on the field that related to the characteristics of combustion and localized heat loss. It is no much of use in design for the entire cooling system because it is focused on such a specific point. In this work, the heat rejection rate to coolant for four different engines are obtained to derive a simple heat transfer empirical formula that can be applied to the engine cooling system design, and it is compared with the other studies. Also, to observe effects of engine operation factors and heat transfer factors on coolant, we measured the metal temperature and the heat rejection rate. The heat rejection to coolant does not depend significantly upon the coolant flowrate, but mainly upon the amount of air fuel mixture and the air fuel ratio as long as the composition of coolant does not change. The reduction of heat rejection to coolant did not effectively improve the fuel consumption, but was mostly converted to raise the exhaust gas temperature and the oil temperature.
The experimental study for an operational characteristics and performance of the sodium heat pipe were carried out. For an experiment. the heat pipe which is 1000mm length and 25.4mm diameter of stainless steel container with 50 mesh of screen wick using sodium as a working fluid is manufactured and tested as functions of heat flow rate, inclined angle and operating temperature. The test results are as follows. During the start-up. frontal start up was observed because of the vapor density increasing as increased the hot zone. Also, the heat pipe showed uniform temperature over than $420^{\circ}C$ of the operating temperature. The average heat transfer coefficient increased as the heat flux and the vapor temperature increase, and the range of the total thermal resistance was 0.075-0.04 $^{\circ}C/W$ at the 12-53.55 $kW/m^2$ of heat flux and $500-750^{\circ}C$of operating temperature. The maximum heat flow rate was 750W at the 10 degree of top heating mode.
Plate heat exchangers have been widely used in various fields because of their high heat transfer coefficients, small area of installation, and ease of maintenance compared to other heat exchangers. However, when plate heat exchanger is used for a long time, leak can occur due to inner crack. Therefore, it is important to understand the inner flow characteristics in plate heat exchangers. In this study, the inner flow characteristics and flow rate of plate heat exchanger were evaluated using various flow directions, pin-hole sizes, and Reynolds numbers. In downflow, initially most water flowed to the opposite of the inlet due to distribution region. Then it gradually had a uniform distribution due to chevron configuration. In upflow, it had a uniform flow consistently due to the dominant gravity effect. As the Reynolds number increased, the leak rate was decreased due to the inertia effect regardless of the flow direction.
Falling liquid plays a role in a wide variety of naturally occurring phenomena as well as in the operation of industrial process equipment where heat and mass transfer take place. In such cases, it is required that the falling film should spread widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film affects the flow characteristics of the falling film. In this study the heat transfer characteristics for a falling liquid film has been investigated by an addition of the surface active agents. The falling liquid film was formed on a vertical flat plate. As the mass flow rate of liquid falling film is increased, the wetted area is a little increased while the heat transfer rate as well as heat transfer coefficient is significantly increased. It is also found that both wetted area and heat transfer rate is substantially increased while heat transfer coefficient is a little increased with an increase in the surfactant concentration at a given mass flow rate.

A pin fin is optimized based on the increasing rate of heat loss by using a two-dimensional analytic method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum thermal resistance and fin length are presented as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic numbers ratio, fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that both the optimum heat loss and fin length decrease linearly whereas the optimum thermal resistance increases very slightly with increase of the fin base thickness.
The flow and heat transfer performance were measured at high temperatures in CFB heat exchanger with multiple risers and downcomers. The theoretical model for predicting heat exchanger performance was developed in this study. The model predictions were compared with the measured heat transfer rates to show relatively good agreement. The maximum gas cooling rate was $20,300^{\circ}C/sec$, and the dioxin reduction rate was 68%.
Design criterion for the size of micro Pt-catalytic combustor is investigated in terms of heat release rate. One-dimensional plug flow model is applied to determine the surface reaction constants using the experimental data at stoichiometric butane-air mixture. With these reaction constants, the mass fraction of butane and heat release rate predicted by the plug flow model are in good agreement with the experimental data at the combustor exit. The relationship between the size of micro catalytic combustor and mixture flowrate is introduced in the form of product of two terms-the effect of fuel conversion efficiency, and the effect of chemical reaction rate and mass transfer rate.
