  • Nowadays, due to the development of industrial and civil engineering technology, enlargement and diversification of concrete structures are being tried. At the same time, the hydration heat generated during the construction of large structures lead to thermal crack, which is occurs causing a problem that durability degradation. In this paper, in order to study the durability and reducing hydration heat of concrete according to the types of cement, that is ordinary portland cement, fly ash cement mixed with a two-component, ternary blend cement mixed with fly ash and blast furnace slag and low heat cement concrete are produced, and compare and analyze the results using property, durability and hydration characteristics, ternary blend cement is appeared to be the most excellent in durability and reduction of hydration heat, and it was determined suitable for construction of mass concrete and requiring durability.

  • High-strength concrete (HSC) generally is made with high amount of cement which may release large amount of hydration heat at early age. The hydration heat will increase the internal temperature of slab and may cause potential cracking. In this study, slab specimens with a dimension of 600 × 600 × 100 mm were cast with concrete incorporating silica fume for test. The thermistors were embedded in the slabs therein to investigate the interior temperature development. The test variables include water-to-binder ratio (0.25, 0.35, 0.40), the cement replacement ratio of silica fume (RSF; 5 %, 10 %, 15 %) and fly ash (RFA; 10 %, 20 %, 30 %). Test results show that reducing the W/B ratio of HSC will enhance the temperature of first heat peak by hydration. The increase of W/B decrease the appearance time of second heat peak, but increase the corresponding maximum temperature. Increase the RSF or decrease the RFA may decrease the appearance time of second heat peak and increase the maximum central temperature of slab. HSC slab with the range of W/B ratio of 0.25 to 0.40 may occur cracking within 4 hours after casting. Reducing W/B may lead to intensive cracking damage, such as more crack number, and larger crack width and length.

  • This study aims to examine the effects of thickness of the concrete members and curing temperature on the properties of low heat concrete through heat of hydration analysis. Type of the members that was analyzed in the experiment is ternary mixture of ordinary portland cement, blast-furnace slag incorporating ratio(20%) and fly ash incorporating ratio(30%), which formed a mat foundation. Thicknesses of the concrete members were 1, 2 and 3(m) and three levels of curing temperatures were 10, 20 and 30(℃). They were applied to analyze the effects on the temperature and thermal cracking index. As a result, for temperature history, temperature difference between the central area and the surface tended to decrease as the thickness of the concrete members get thinner. For the temperature cracking index, on the other hand, the risk of cracking tended to decrease as the curing temperature gets higher and as the thickness gets thinner.

  • In this study, to suggest an efficient method of using coal gasification slag(CGS), a byproduct from integrated gasification combined cycle(IGCC), as a combined fine aggregate for concrete mixture, the diverse performances of concrete mixtures with combined fine aggregates of CGS, river sand, and crushed sand were evaluated. Additionally, using CGS, the reduction of the hydration heat and the strength developing performance were analyzed to provide a method for reducing the heat of hydration of mass concrete by using combined fine aggregate with CGS and replacing fly ash with cement. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: as a method of recycling CGS from IGCC as concrete fine aggregate, a combination of CGS with crushed sand offers advantages for the concrete mixture. Additionally, when the CGS combined aggregate is used with low-heat-mix designed concrete with fly ash, it has the synergistic effect of reducing the hydration heat of mass concrete compared to the low-heat-designed concrete mixture currently in wide use.

  • Carbon nanotubes are used in various industries with their excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. In the construction industry, research is being conducted to give self-sensing capabilities to structures, but the results of experiments vary among researchers, and the analysis is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the hydration and electrical properties of MWCNT-added cement pastes were measured. The electrical resistance values of hydration heat, porosity, Rietveld quantitative analysis, compressive strength, and distance were measured.. The heat resistance, porosity, Rietvelt quantitative analysis, compressive strength and distance were measured according to electrical resistance. Experimental results showed that the heat of hydration decreased with increasing MWCNT. XRD Rietveld quantitative analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the amount of hydration products with increasing addition rate of MWCNT. As a result of SEM analysis, the MWCNT is agglomerated by van der Waals forces, and this area is considered to be caused by voids and weak areas. The electrical resistance value decreases as the addition rate is increased, and thus may play a role for magnetic sensing in the future.

  • This research carries out experiments for hydration exothermic rate and adiabatic temperature rise of concrete to examine the characteristics of the hydration heat of high flowing self-compacting concrete with a normal strength. As a result of the hydration exothermic rate experiment, the high flowing self-compacting concrete that used Lime stone powder and fly ash as polymers shows that its hydration heat amount reduces due to the reduction of unit cement. The result measured the adiabatic temperature rise of concrete presents that high flowing self-compacting concrete having lots of binder contents has a good performance in temperature reduction due to the effect of polymer and that triple adding high flowing self-compacting concrete has a similar temperature rise speed with conventional concrete. As a result of the research, high flowing self-compacting concrete shows a better temperature reduction performance for the binder content per unit than conventional concrete. In addition, it is judged that triple adding high flowing self-compacting concrete with a specified concrete strength 30 MPa is more beneficial in temperature reduction and early hydration heat than double adding high flowing self-compacting concrete.

  • Cracking may be used to help predict the cause of deterioration of concrete, since in many cases characteristic cracking patterns are produced. The purpose of this paper is an analysis of the crack cause occurred in concrete faced rockfill dams. We analyzed the concrete placement methods, cracking pattern, the inspection of crack depth by the ultrasonic pulse velocity method, and the measurement of heat of hydration, environmental condition, and so on. In this study, the crack cause of concrete faced rockfill dam is the wrong method of concrete placement, high temperature difference by cement of heat of hydration and concrete of drying shrinkage.

  • The subway concrete box structure can`t establish expansion joint because of animal power delivery of the subway rail. In this case, As increase of structure volume, it is subjected to cause temperature crack. The temperature crack due to the heat of hydration classified a nonstructural crack. but it has a bad effect on durability of concrete structures. especially, in case of a subway concrete box structure, when a water-proof facilities is beaked on an outer-wall, the water leakage occurs through a penetration crack generated from a wall of the concrete structure too. This paper, for the subway concrete box structure, examined a condition of temperature crack occurrence by a heat of hydration concerned external temperature from analysing by a three dimensional finite element method.
