  • This paper presents the application of a magnetic gear to the electric propulsion system for an aircraft. Since high torque is required in aircraft electric propulsion systems, combining a speed reducer can amplify the torque. However, mechanical gears have issues, such as friction, vibration, and heat generation, which lead to maintenance challenges. In the case of a direct-drive motor that does not use mechanical gears, the size and weight of the motor increase to achieve high torque. This paper proposes the application of a magnetic gear to solve the maintenance issues of mechanical gears and the weight increase problem of direct-drive motors in aircraft electric propulsion systems. In this paper, a magnetic gear suitable for aircraft electric propulsion systems is designed, and it is compared with a direct-drive motor in terms of performance and the feasibility of applying the magnetic gear is verified.

  • Transition metal chalcogenides are promising cathode materials for next-generation battery systems, particularly sodium-ion batteries. Ni3Co6S8-pitch-derived carbon composite microspheres with a yolk-shell structure (Ni3Co6S8@C-YS) were synthesized through a three-step process: spray pyrolysis, pitch coating, and post-heat treatment process. Ni3Co6S8@C-YS exhibited an impressive reversible capacity of 525.2 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 over 50 cycles when employed as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. However, Ni3Co6S8 yolk shell nanopowder (Ni3Co6S8-YS) without pitch-derived carbon demonstrated a continuous decrease in capacity during charging and discharging. The superior sodium-ion storage properties of Ni3Co6S8@C-YS were attributed to the pitch-derived carbon, which effectively adjusted the size and distribution of nanocrystals. The carbon-coated yolk-shell microspheres proposed here hold potential for various metal chalcogenide compounds and can be applied to various fields, including the energy storage field.

  • Ceramic materials have excellent material properties such as stability at high temperatures, chemical stability, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, so they are applicable even in extreme environments of high temperature and pressure. In particular, silicon carbide can be applied in the field of structural ceramics due to its characteristics of high strength, hardness, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance even at high temperatures. In this study, considering the application of silicon carbide materials to next-generation turbines, silicon carbide materials were manufactured using a liquid phase sintering method. When manufacturing liquid phase sintered silicon carbide, sintering additives were added to lower the sintering temperature and densify the material. In Al2O3-SiO2, it was confirmed that the secondary product of the sintering additive was observed as a slightly dark area and was evenly distributed overall, and the fracture surface of Al2O3-SiO2 was in the form of transgranular fracture in which cracks progressed along the crystal plane, and the flexural strength for Al2O3-SiO2 was about 445.6 MPa.

  • In this study, we conducted research on a miniaturized transmission system suitable for ultra-compact electric vehicles, such as electric arts or small electric cars. While conventional electric vehicles eliminate multi-gear transmissions and control motor output or secure initial driving force through reducers, in vehicles like electric karts or compact electric cars, which have relatively small battery capacities, the driving range can be reduced or the motor can be stressed epending on the loading state. Therefore, in this study, we developed a low stage ratio 0.625 and high stage ratio 1.6 a two-stage transmission system that can change gears as needed, considering factors such as slope conditions and loading status, by applying the continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanism. Based on the selected gear ratios, we designed the transmission and created a test rig to verify the power transmission efficiency of the developed transmission. Using the test rig, we varied the rotational speed and load of the transmission to confirm its power transmission characteristics and also examined the heat generation characteristics during shifting and operation. As a result, developed a two-stage transmission with a CVT structure.

  • Dendrite boundaries and γ/γ' structure of a second generation single crystalline superalloy CMSX-4 almost disappeared during solution treatment above 1310℃. γ' size in the dendrite core was uniform and fine, however, that in the interdendritic region was coarse and nonuniform. With increasing solutionizing temperature and time, γ' size in the interdednritic region became fine and segregation of alloying elements between dendrite core and interdendritic region diminished. Segregation of solid solution strengthening elements such as W, Co, Re in the dendrite core was not fully removed through the heat treatments, especially that of Re still remained to some extent. Tensile properties at room temperature at which does not cause precipitaion of harmful phases, were improved with increasing solutionizing temperature and time.

  • The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is equipped with a Transmitter/Receiver (TR) module, which serves as the signal transmission and reception unit for acquiring image data. The TR module generates significant heat during signal generation and amplification, potentially degrading performance or causing mission failure. Furthermore, launch and operational environments may result in structural damage to the components. Thus, assessing the thermal and structural safety of the TR module through thermal and vibration tests is essential to guarantee its safety. Safety assessments can be verified through environmental tests prescribed in MIL-STD-883. This paper explores the thermal and structural safety characteristics of the TR module by simulating test environments using finite element analysis prior to conducting environmental tests.

  • Over the years, numerous evaluations of material attractiveness have been performed for conventional light water reactors to better understand the nature of the spent fuel material and its desirability for misuse at different points in the nuclear fuel cycle. However, availability of such assessments for newer, Generation IV reactors such as Molten Salt Reactors is rather limited. In the present study we address the gap in knowledge of material attractiveness for molten salt reactor systems and describe the nature of irradiated fuel salts which the nuclear safeguards community might be faced with in the near future as more and more such reactors enter commission and operation. Within the scope of the paper, we use a large database of simulated irradiated fuel salt isotopics (and other derived quantities such as gamma activity, decay heat, and neutron emission rates) developed specifically for a molten salt reactor concept in order to shed some light on possible weapons usability of uranium and plutonium present in the irradiated fuel salts. This has been achieved by proposing a new attractiveness metric that is better suited for quantifying attractiveness of irradiated salts from a model molten salt concept. The said metric has been computed using a database that has been created by simulating the irradiation of molten fuel salt in a concept core over a wide range of operational parameters (burnup, initial enrichment, and cooling time) using the Monte-Carlo particle transport code, Serpent. With the help of this attractiveness metric, the findings from this study have shown that in relative terms, molten salt spent fuel is more attractive than spent fuel produced by a conventional light water reactor. The findings also underscore the need for strengthened safeguards measures for such spent fuel. These results are expected to be useful in the future for regulatory authorities as well as for nuclear safeguards inspectors for designing a functional safeguards verification routine for irradiated fuel of such unique nature.

  • A variety of micro meteorological variables such as air temperature, wind, solar radiation and latent heat at Gwangneung forests (conifer and broadleaved forests) and AWS (Automated Weather Station) of Pocheon urban area were used to quantify the air temperature reduction effect of forests, which is considered to be an eco-friendly solution for reducing the urban heat island intensity during summer. In June, July and August of 2016 and 2017, the average maximum air temperature differences between above and below canopy of forests, and between the forests and urban areas were $-1.9^{\circ}C$ and $-3.4^{\circ}C$ respectively, and they occurred at 17:00. However, there was no difference between conifer and broadleaved forests. The effect of air temperature reduction by the forests was positively correlated with accumulated evapotranspiration and solar radiation from 14:00 to 17:00 and showed a negative correlation with wind speed. We have developed a model to quantify the effect of air temperature reduction by forests using these variables. The nighttime air temperature reduction effect by forests was due to the generation of cold air from radiative cooling and the air temperature inversion phenomenon that occurs when the generated cold air moves down the side of mountain. The model was evaluated in Seoul by using 28 AWSs. The evaluation shows that the air temperature of each district in Seoul was negatively correlated with the area and size of the surrounding tall vegetation that drives vegetation evapotranspiration during the day. During the night, however, the size of the surrounding tall vegetation and the elevations of nearby mountains were the main influencing factors on the air temperature. Our research emphasizes the importance of the establishment and management of urban forests and the composition of wind roads from mountains for urban air temperature reduction.

  • A thinner film has superior electrical properties and a better amorphous structure. Amorphous structures can be effective in improving conductivity through a depletion effect. Research is needed on the Schottky contact, where potential barriers are formed, as a way to identify these characteristics. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films were prepared to examine the amorphous structure and Schottky contact, $SiO_2$ thin films were prepared using Ar = 20 sccm. $SnO_2$ thin films were deposited using mixed gas with a flow rate of argon and oxygen at 20 sccm, and $SnO_2$ thin films were added by magnetron sputtering and treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. To identify the conditions under which the amorphous structure was constructed, the XRD patterns were investigated and C-V and I-V measurements were taken to make Al electrodes and perform electrical analysis. The depletion layer was formed by the recombination of electrons and holes through the heat treatment process. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films confirmed that the pores were well formed when heat treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and an electric current was applied over the micro area. An amorphous $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin film with heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ showed no reflection at $33^{\circ}\;2{\theta}$ in the XRD pattern, and a reflection at $44^{\circ}2\;{\theta}$. • Generation of weather forecasts at 100 m resolution through a statistical downscaling process was implemented by Korea Meteorological Administration Post- Processing (KMAPP) system. The KMAPP data started to be used in various industries such as hydrologic, agricultural, and renewable energy, sports, etc. Cheorwon area and Jeonbuk area have horizontal planes in a relatively wide range in Korea, where there are many complex mountainous areas. Cheorwon, which has a large number of in-situ and remotely sensed phenological data over large-scale rice paddy cultivation areas, is considered as an appropriate area for verifying KMAPP prediction performance in agricultural areas. In this study, the performance of predicting KMAPP temperature changes according to ecological changes in agricultural areas in Cheorwon was compared and verified using KMA and National Center for AgroMeteorology (NCAM) observations. Also, during the heat wave in Jeonbuk Province, solar radiation forecast was verified using Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS) data to review the usefulness of KMAPP forecast data as input data for application models such as livestock heat stress models. Although there is a limit to the need for more cases to be collected and selected, the improvement in post-harvest temperature forecasting performance in agricultural areas over ordinary residential areas has led to indirect guesses of the biophysical and phenological effects on forecasting accuracy. In the case of solar radiation prediction, it is expected that KMAPP data will be used in the application model as detailed regional forecast data, as it tends to be consistent with observed values, although errors are inevitable due to human activity in agricultural land and data unit conversion.
