Measurement of Heat Flux in Rocket Combustors Using Plug-Type Heat Flux Gauges

  • This paper proposes a new measurement method to improve the shortcomings of an existing integral method for measuring heat flux in plug-type heat flux gauges in the high-temperature and high-pressure environments of liquid-rocket combustors. Using the existing integral measurement method, the calculation of the surface area for the heat flux in the gauge exhibits error in relation to the actual surface area. To solve this problem, transient profiles obtained from ANSYS Fluent were used to calculate unsteady heat flux as it adjusted to the measured temperature. First, a heat flux gauge was designed and manufactured specifically for use in the high-temperature and high-pressure conditions that are similar to those of liquid rocket combustors. A calibration test was performed to prove the reliability of the manufactured gauge. Then, a combustion experiment was conducted, in which the gauge was used to measure unsteady heat flux in a liquid rocket combustor that used kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellants. Reasonable heat flux values were obtained using the gauge. Therefore, the proposed measurement method is considered to offer significant improvement over the existing integral method.

Development of High-Temperature Heat Flux Gauge for Steel Quenching (강재 급속냉각용 고온 열유속게이지 개발)

  • The present study was motivated by increasing demands on quantitative measurements of the heat flux through the water cooling and quenching process of hot steel. The local heat flux measurements are employed by a novel experimental technique that has a function of high-temperature heat flux gauge in which test block assemblies are directly used to measure the heat flux variation during water cooling and quenching of hot steel. The heat flux can be directly achieved by Fourier's law and is also compared with numerical estimation which is solved by inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP). The high-temperature heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure cooling rate and history during the actual cooling applications of steelmaking process. In addition, the measurement uncertainty of heat flux is calculated by a quantitative uncertainty analysis which is based on the ANSI/ASME PTC 19.1-2005 standard.

  • In this study an the development of the heat flux sensor with thermocouple, the heat-treated adhesive type film nickel gauge(Ni-Gauge) for measuring temperature was used. and this Ni-Gauge is not only comparable for platinum gauge(Pt-Gauge) in linearity, but also economically cheap. And from this viewpoint. numerical analysis is essential to investigate charateristics of sensor, since this analysis is capable of simulating precise boudary condition and practical conditions and so on. By the way. there are many types of heat flux sensor. of which adhesive type flux sensor is common, in the study this type of heat flux sensor was chogen. and analysis of the sensor is considered as a kind of open cavity figure. performed by SIMPLER algorithm. As a result. through temperature distributial of the sensor by numerical analysis in steady and unsteady state, the dracteristics of the acdhesive type heat flux sensor(lst heat flux sensor) acooodinge to heat flux, that is, outvoltage, sensitivity. and responsibilty could be evaluated. in addition, time of improved heat flux sensor(2nd heat flux sensor) could be predicted fran the reflectian of proper operating temperature(l50 $^{\circ}C$)of theNi-Gauge.

  • In this study on the development of the heat flux sensor, unlike the common heat-flux sensor with thermocouple, the heat-treated adhesive-tupe film nickel-gauge was used in measuring temperature. The proposed its Ni-gauge is bound to be compatible with platinum gauge(Pt-Gauge) in its linearity. It is also considered to be cheap in economical sense. In the evaluation of it's performance, the numerical analysis is essential to investigate charateristics of proper sensor and the adequate analsis is depended upon boundary conditions and actual conditions. There are many types of heat flux sensor in the market, and adhexive type flux sensor is most common. In the present investigation, this type of heat flux sensor had been chosen. The figure of the sensor under consideration is an open cavity type, which is calculated numerically by SIMPLER algorithm. The temperature distributions of the sensor predicted by numerical calculation for steady and unsteady states are able to give the chacteristics of the adhesive type heat flux sensor(1st heat flux sensor) according to the heat flux. It means that the outvoltage, the sensitivity, and the performances of responsibility could be evaluated as a result. Through this analysis improved heat flux sensor(2nd heat flux sensor) could be predicted with the reflection of proper operating temperature($150^{\circ}C$) of the Ni-gauge.

  • The demand on quantitative measurement of the heat flux is motivated in making higher-quality steel product through a water quenching process of plate mill. To improve a spatial degree of heat flux measurement, the multi-point heat flux measurement was carried out by a unique experimental technique that has a combination of the existing single-point heat flux gauge. The corresponding heat flux can be easily determined by Fourier's law in a conventional way. The multi-point heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure the surface heat flux, the surface heat transfer coefficient during a water quenching applications of steelmaking process. The results exhibit different heat transfer regimes; such as single-phase forced convection, nucleate boiling, and film boiling, that are occurred in close proximity on the multi-point heat flux gauge quenched by water impinging jet.

Measurement Bias of Heat Flux Gauge based on Calibration Constant supported by Manufacturer (제조사 보정상수에 기인한 열유속계의 측정 오차)

  • As a preliminary study to quantify the measurement uncertainty of the Schmidt-Boelter type heat flux gauge, the present study has been conducted to evaluate the measurement error due to the calibration constant supported by manufacturer. Calibrations of heat flux gauges are performed at NIST Fire Research Division using a calibration facility with heat source of a 2000 W halogen-tungsten filament lamp and the calibration constant is obtained by comparing the response of the reference and a standard heat flux gauge at the same irradiance conditions. Calibration for heat flux gauges made by three different manufacturers is compared with their factory calibration constant. Relative error due to fluctuation of output signal from heat flux gauges does not exceed 1% of the mean value and the relative error between calibration of this study and factory calibration constant ranged from 1.5% to 14.3%. The present study shows that a continuous and periodic calibration is necessary for accurate heat flux measurement.

  • Rapid and homogeneous heating in heat treatment has been a challenging engineering issue throughout a heating temperature over $1,000^{\circ}C$. Induction heating has been widely used in field of heat treatment compared with conventional heating system. Advantages in homogeneous heating, simple fabrication, and repeatable use can be efficiently made with the induction heater. In this paper, numerical analysis of an induction coil system for heat flux gauge heating is performed. The effect of configuration on the heating performance was considered in various cases of the coil radius, distance between the winding, relative height difference between the heat flux gauge and the coil, and the applied current frequency. Temperature distribution within the heat flux gauge at frequency-steady state was calculated with a finite element method. Sensitivity analysis was also performed and the relative importance of 2 key parameters; coil radius, distance between the winding, were taken as main contributors for induction heating.

Effect of Cooling Water Temperature on Heat Transfer Characteristics of Water Impinging Jet (냉각수 온도에 따른 수분류 충돌제트의 열전달 특성 연구)

  • Water jet impingement cooling has been widely used in a various engineering applications; especially in cooling of hot steel plate of steelmaking processes and heat treatment in hot metals as an effective method of removing high heat flux. The effects of cooling water temperature on water jet impingement cooling are primarily investigated for hot steel plate cooling applications in this study. The local heat flux measurements are introduced by a novel experimental technique that has a function of high-temperature heat flux gauge in which test block assemblies are used to measure the heat flux distribution during water jet impingement cooling. The experiments are performed at fixed flow rate and fixed nozzle-to-target spacing. The results show that effects of cooling water temperature on the characteristics of jet impingement heat transfer are presented for five different water temperatures ranged from 5 to $45^{\circ}C$. The local heat flux curves and heat transfer coefficients are also provided with respect to different boiling regimes.

Heat Flux Measurements in High Velocity Oxygen-Fuel Torch Flow for Testing High Thermal Materials (고온 재료 테스트를 위한 고속 산소 연료 토치 흐름에서의 열유속 측정)

  • A commercial HVOF torch (originally designed for coating applications) has been modified as a high temperature flow source for material testing. In this study, a water cooled commercial Gardon gauge was used to measure heat fluxes at four locations away from the nozzle exit. The cooling water temperature data were used to calculate calorimetric heat fluxes at the same locations. The heat fluxes from both methods were compared and the calorimetric heat fluxes were found to be many times higher than the Gardon gauge heat fluxes. A hypothesis is applied to the calorimetric method to understand the discrepancy seen between the methods. The Gardon gauge heat fluxes are seen to be in the range of the hypothesized calorimetric calculations. This can be considered as a considerable validation for the hypothesis, but further refinement needed using appropriate numerical models.

  • Plate thermometers are used for measuring the radiative heat flux in high-temperature surroundings. The heat flux is calculated from the temperature measured at the back surface of the stainless steel surface of the meter. Heat fluxes from a Schmidt-Boelter gauge are measured as reference heat fluxes. A combined conductive coefficient is introduced to consider the heat loss to insulation, conduction through the stainless plate depth, and conduction from the non-uniform temperature of the plate of the plate thermometer. This coefficient is obtained using the repulsive particle swarm optimization.
