The objective of this study is to theoretically analyze the performance of an open wet air-cycle refrigeration system, which nowadays is increasingly generating environmental concern. The temperature and relative humidity of the outside air are selected as the most important parameters. As the temperature and relative humidity of the outside air increase, the pressure ratio of the ACM compressor is determined to be nearly constant, the air temperature at the exit of the system increases, and the amount of condensed water, the cooling capacity, the COP, and the total entropy production rate increase overall. The effects of the effectiveness of the heat exchanger and the efficiency of the turbine on the performance are greater than that of the efficiency of the ACM compressor. Also, the performance of the wet air-cycle refrigeration system with two heat exchangers is enhanced, with a high COP and low total entropy production rate, compared to the system with a single heat exchanger.
This paper presents experimental result of characteristics about Closed circuit Cooling Tower having a rated 2RT. The experimental apparatus has been set-up with a conventional type system. The test section is heat exchangers of cooling tower that consist of different vertical tubes, 15.88mm with 10 rows and columns and 19.05 mm with 8 rows and 12 columns. The main results were summarized as follows : The values of heat and mass transfer coefficients of cooling tower operating with two paths are higher than these with one path. Cooling capacity per unit volume using 15.88mm tubes are higher than 19.05mm tubes.
In this study, a $CO_2$ air-conditioning system was investigated with different types of electrically driven compressors, parallel flow type gas cooler, four-pass type evaporator, internal heat exchanger integrated with accumulator, and electric expansion valve. The experimental study was conducted under various operating conditions (ie., different rotational compressor speeds, air inlet temperatures and air velocity coming into heat exchangers). The experimental results showed the cooling capacity was 3.5kW at $35^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature when the vehicle was idle (ie., the worst condition for cooling off the gas cooler). In terms of performance effect of the compressor, the e-RP model had a slightly better cooling capacity and coefficient of performance than the e-GR model under the same test conditions. An experimental equation for optimum cooling-performance control was also suggested based on the results. A high-pressure control algorithm for the super critical cycle was determined to achieve both maximum cooling performance and efficient energy consumption. The results from the experimental equation coincided with those of previous experimental studies.

Photovoltaic and Thermal collector (PV/T) systems are renewable energy devices that can produce electricity and heat energy simultaneously using solar panels and heat exchangers. Since PV/T systems are exposed to the outdoors, their reliability is affected by various environmental factors. This paper presents a reliability test for a PV/T system and evaluates the test results. The reliability assessment entails performance, environment, safety, and life tests. The factor that had the greatest influence on the life of the system was the hydraulic pressure applied to the heat exchanger. A test was conducted by repeatedly applying pressure to the PV/T system, and a reliability analysis was conducted based on the test results. As a result, the shape parameter (β) value of 5.6658 and the B10life 308,577 cycles at the lower 95% confidence interval were obtained.
In this study, the exergy characteristics were analyzed, according to the mass flow rate of the propane working fluid and the pressure change in the turbine inlet, for the efficient recovery of cold energy and exhaust heat by the waste energy recovery system applied to the LNG FSRU regasification process. When the turbine inlet pressure and mass flow rate of the Primary Rankine Cycle were kept constant, the exergy efficiency and the net power increased. This occurred as the turbine inlet pressure and the mass flow rate of the working fluid increased in the Secondary Rankine Cycle, respectively, and the maximum values were confirmed. In this regard, the fluctuations in the exergy rate flowing into and out of the system and the exergy rate destroyed by pumps, evaporators, turbines, and LNG heat exchangers (condensers) were examined in detail.
A novel steel-pipe energy pile is introduced, in which the deformed rebars for main reinforcing are replaced with steel pipes in a large diameter cast-in-place energy pile. Here, the steel pipes act as not only reinforcements but also heat exchangers by circulating the working fluid through the hollow hole in the steel pipes. Under this concept, the steel-pipe energy pile can serve a role of supporting main structures and exchanging heat with surrounding mediums without installing additional heat exchange pipes. In this study, the steel-pipe energy pile was constructed in a test bed considering the material properties of steel pipes and the subsoil investigation. Then, the thermal performance test (TPT) in cooling condition was conducted in the constructed energy pile to investigate thermal performance. In addition, the thermal performance of the steel-pipe energy pile was compared with that of the conventional large diameter cast-in-place energy pile to evaluate its applicability. As a result, the steel-pipe energy pile showed 11% higher thermal performance than the conventional energy pile along with much simpler construction processes.
In this study, a series of numerical analyses has been performed in order to evaluate the performance of a full-scale closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger constructed in Wonju. The circulation pipe HDPE, borehole and surrounding ground were modeled using FLUENT, a finite-volume method (FVM) program, for analyzing the heat transfer process of the system. Two user-defined functions (UDFs) accounting for the difference in the temperatures of the circulating inflow and outflow water and the change of the surrounding ground temperature with depth were adopted in the FLUENT model. The thermal properties of materials estimated in laboratory were used in the numerical analyses to compare the thermal efficiency of the cement grout with that of the bentonite grout used in the construction. The results of the simulation provide a verification of the in situ thermal response test data. The numerical model with the ground thermal conductivity of 4W/mK yielded the simulation result closer to the in-situ thermal response test than with the ground thermal conductivity of 3W/mK. From the results of the numerical analyses, the effective thermal conductivities of the cement and bentonite grouts were obtained to be 3.32W/mK and 2.99 W/mK, respectively.
The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.
