Silicon carbide (SiC) is a candidate material for heat exchangers for VHTR (Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor) due to its refractory nature and high thermal conductivity. This research has focused on demonstration of physical properties and mock-up fabrication for the future heat exchange applications. It was found that the SiC-based components can be applied for process heat exchanger (PHE) and intermediate heat exchanger (IHX), which are operated at $400{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$, based on our examination for the following aspects: optimum fabrication technologies (design, machining and bonding) for compact design, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid environment at high temperature, and simulation results on heat transferring and thermal stress distribution of heat exchanger mock-up.
Scale is formed when hard water is heated or cooled in heat transfer equipments such as heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, boilers, and pipe walls. When scale deposits in a heat exchanger surface, it is traditionally called fouling. The objective of the present study is to investigate the formation of fouling in a heat exchanging system. A lab-scale heat exchanging system is built-up to observe and measure the formation of fouling experimentally. Water analyses are conducted to obtain the properties of HAN river water. In the present study a microscopic observation is conducted to visualize the process of scale formation. Hardness of HAN-river water is higher than that of tap water in Seoul.
Recently, circulating liquid fluidized bed heat exchangers are widely used in a number of places - chemical, process, food concentration, waste water treatment facilities, etc. In a circulating heat exchanger, solid particles circulate with the liquid, thereby increase the heat transfer and reduce the fouling potential of the heat exchanger. In this study, glass beads were circulated through a vertical tube. The pressure loss and the heat transfer coefficient were measured. At low flow velocities, glass beads enhanced the heat transfer considerably. The enhancement increased as the volume fraction of the glass beads increased. It also increased as the particle diameter increased. The pressure loss showed a similar trend. From the observed particle behavior near tube wall, a possible explanation of the trend is provided.
This study is performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics for thermal performance of fin-and-tube sensible heat exchangers under the low air flowrate according to fin geometry combination and coolant flowrate control. Fins and tubes of samples were separated between front row and rear row. Experiment results are plotted heat transfer rate of each row, heat transfer coefficient and sensible heat ratio against water flowrate control of each row. It is observed that thermal performance can be enhanced by fin geometry combination and water flowrate control of each row under the low air flowrate.
In the case of heat exchangers operating under frosting condition, the growth of frost layer causes the heat exchanger to increase the thermal resistance and pressure loss of the air flow. In this paper, a transient characteristic prediction model of the heat transfer for multi inverter heat pump with frosting on its surface was presented taking into account the change of the fin efficiency due to the growth of the frost layer. In this dynamic simulation program, which was peformed for a basic air conditioning system model, such as evaporator, condenser, compressor, linear electronic expansion valve (LEV) and bypass circuit. The theoretical model was driven from the obtained heat transfer coefficient and mass transfer coefficient, independently. And we consider heat transfer performance was only affected by a decrease of the wind flow area. The calculated results were compared with some cases of experiments for frosting conditions.
The water-to-air heat pump system requires relatively lower energy consumption and less installation space. The heat exchangers used for this system are the finned-tube type for the indoor unit and the double-tube type for the outdoor unit. Mathematical models for this system are developed and programmed in computer. Experimental data from various conditions are obtained and compared with calculated values from the computer simulation program. Differences of cooling capacity and COP are 1.25% and 0.47%, and those of heating capacity and COP are 0.51% and 0.13%, respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, the developed program is effectively used for the design and the performance prediction of water-to-air heat pump system.
Transcritical$CO_2$ systems are under consideration for use as residential/mobile air conditioners. In these systems, an internal heat exchanger is usually adopted to improve both capacity and/or COP of the $CO_2$ system in lower operating pressure range of gas cooler. A program has been developed to analyse the performance of internal heat exchangers using the section-by-section method. The internal heat exchanger of coaxial configuration is first analyzed and fairly good agreements with the data are obtained, And then the internal heat exchanger of multiple circular coil configuration has been investigated. The results obtained from the parametric study provide the guidelines for the initial design and manufacturing concepts of the internal heat exchanger in transcritical $CO_2$ system. Further studies are necessary to develop the heat transfer correlations of carbon dioxide in the tubes to obtain more accurate results.
The purpose of this study is to present the simulation results and an overview of the performance assessment of the Ground-Source Heat Pump(GSHF) system. The calculation was performed for two design factors: the spacing between boreholes and the depth of the vertical ground heat exchangers. And the simulation was carried out using the thermal simulation code TRNSYS with new model of water to water heat pump developed by this study. As a result, it was anticipated that the yearly mean COPs of heat pump for heating and cooling are about 3.7 and 5.8 respectively and the heat pump can supply 100% of heating and cooling load all the year around.
Heat transfer augmentation based on the process intensification concept in heat exchangers and thermal reactors has received much attention in recent years, mainly due to energy efficiency and environmental considerations. The concept consists of the development of novel apparatuses and techniques that, compared to those commonly used today, are expected to bring dramatic improvements in manufacturing and processing, substantially decreasing equipment size, energy consumption, and ultimately resulting in cheaper, sustainable technologies. The objective of this paper was to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of tubular thermal reactor using static mixing technology. Glycerin and water were used as the test fluids and water was used as the heating source. The results for heat transfer rate were strongly influenced by tube geometry and flow conditions.
The present experimental study investigates the impact of porous fins on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in plate-fin heat exchangers. Systematic experiments have been carried out in a simplified model of a plate-porous fin heat exchanger at a controlled test environment. Comparison of performance between the porous fins and the conventional louvered fins has been made. The experimental results indicate that friction and heat transfer rate are significantly affected by permeability as well as porosity of the porous fin. The porous fins used in the present study show a similar air-side performance to the louvered fin. The correlations of friction and modified j-factor are also given for the design of the plate-porous fin heat exchanger.
