  • The early development and use of plate heat exchangers (PHE) were in response to stringent statutory requirements from dairy products in the late 19th century, but PHEs were not exploited commercially until the 1920s. Since then, although the basic concept of PHEs has changed little, its design and construction have progressed significantly to accommodate higher temperatures and pressures, as well as large heat exchanging capacities. The development of current chevron-type corrugated heat plates has been ongoing since the oil shock in the 1970s to improve energy efficiency. The development trend of PHEs is consistent with the development of larger heat plates with better thermal efficiency, lower pressure drop, and good flow distribution. In this study, the thermal performance of small heat plates (PHE-S) and large heat plates (PHE-L) with the same plate depth and corrugation pitch were analyzed experimentally for each channel (H, M, and L type) to suggest development directions of heat plates. The test results showed that for the convectional heat transfer coefficient, the PHE-S was on average, 16.5% higher in the H type, 25% higher in the M type, and 40% higher in the L type than PHE-L. In the case of the pressure drop, the PHE-S was 19% higher in the H type, 46% higher in the M type, and 61% higher in the L type than PHE-L. These results were attributed to the differences in fluid distribution areas between the PHE-S and PHE-L, among other potential causes.

  • An energy pile is one of the novel ground heat exchangers (GHEX's) that is a economical alternative to the conventional closed-loop vertical GHEX. The combined system of both a structural foundation and a GHEX contains a heat exchange pipe inside the pile foundation and allows a working fluid circulating through the pipe, inducing heat exchange with the ground formation. In this paper, a group of energy piles equipped with parallel U-type (5, 8 and 10 pairs) heat exchange pipes was constructed in a test-bed by fabricating in large-diameter cast-in-place concrete piles. In addition, a closed-loop vertical GHEX with 30m depth was constructed nearby to conduct in-situ thermal response tests (TRTs) and to compare with the thermal performance of the cast-in-place energy piles. A series of thermal performance tests was carried out with application of an artificial cooling and heating load to evaluate the heat exchange rate of energy piles. The applicability of cast-in-place energy piles was evaluated by comparing the relative heat exchange efficiency and heat exchange rate with preceding studies. Finally, it is concluded that the cast-in-place energy piles constructed in the test-bed demonstrate effective and stable thermal performance compared with the other types of GHEX.

  • Catalytic Combustion used to be applied to specific conditions because of the characteristics different from flame combustion. However, many researches are focused on widening the applicant range of catalytic combustion with the competences of catalytic combustion. The development of many catalytic combustion appliances is one of the trials to overcome the restrictions of reaction and maximize the merits. In this research, past developments of appliances are depicted and new conceptual system will be introduced - sequential system. Sequential catalytic combustion system is composed of units - existing catalytic heat exchangers. This system is performed with parallel in composition and serially in operation. First, the burden of the preheating can be dramatically reduced. Second, stable operation control is expected. Lastly, Capacity expansion is flexible.

  • A theoretical model for the transient performance of vapor-compression air-conditioning system has been developed to evaluate the influence of the refrigerant charge on the system performance. A set of mass and energy equations for the simulation of the heat exchangers and the capillary tube and a polytropic compression model for the compressor are used. The present model successfully predicts the transient behavior of the vapor-compression air-conditioner from the startup. As the refrigerant charge is increased, both the evaporating and condensing pressures increase gradually, and the cooling rate and the COP show a maximum in the range of 0.75-0.8 kg of refrigerant charge. This amount of refrigerant mass is determined to be the optimum charge of the model system. Also, the effect of outdoor air temperature on the optimum refrigerant charge is discussed.

  • Swirling flows are found in very wide range of applications, for examples, cyclone separators, spraying machines, heat exchangers and jet pumps, ect. Relatively, little work has been done on the swirl flow using flow visualization techniques. This study deals with many visualization techniques to study on swirling flow. These techniques are related to oil films methods, smoke, dye liquids, liquid crystal, stroboscope light, smoke wire, white light, naphthalene sublimation, LDV(lase doppler Velocimetry) and PIV(particle image velocimetry). The present work has handled single, annular, carved tube, swirl expansion and swirl wake using several visualization methods in the vertical and horizontal circular tube.

  • A problem of a unsteady time-dependent flow in a channel is of practical importance and widely considered in the design of devices such as heat exchangers, duct, and electronic equipments. The characteristics of fluid flow in channel with oscillating vortex generator was investigated experimentally. The main object of this study was to investigate the effect of the excited frequency, the excited amplitude, and Reynolds numbers on the generated frequency. Flow patterns were visualized using smoke generator and generated frequencies were measured using hot wire anemometer. When the excited frequency is increased, excited amplitude decreased and Reynolds number increased, the strength of PSD of generated frequency is decreased.

  • Investigation of the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system using the refrigerant mixtures of R744 (carbon dioxide) and R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) has been carried out by simulation and experiment. Cycle simulation using a constant UA model in heat exchangers has been performed for R744/134a mixtures of the compositions ranging from 10/90 to 30/70 by weight. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work, refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a mixture were presented. Performance test has been executed in the autocascade refrigeration system by varying secondary fluid temperatures at evaporator and condenser inlets. Experimental results match quite well with those obtained from the simulation.

  • A header is the device that makes uniform flow distribution in all branches from header of heat exchangers, pipe burner or chemical equipments. In this study, experimental tests have been performed in order to investigate the flow distribution characteristics in a straight header and tapered header which have 6 and 11 glass pipe branches. The experimental equipment consists of a water circulation system where the fluid velocity in each glass pipe is measured by Ar-ion LDV system. From the experiments and the theoretical equation, it could be recommended that tapered header should be determined so that its internal velocities inside the header become uniform according to taper of the header and number of attached branches for uniform flow distribution in energy systems.
