  • An experimental study has been performed on heat and mass transfer in a falling film absorber with a strong lithium bromide solution in small-sized household absorption chiller/heater. Components were concentrically arranged in a cylindrical form. from the center, low temperature generator, absorber and evaporator. This arrangement of helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the machine much more compact than conventional one. Experimental measurements were conducted with a helical absorber and the obtained data were compared with data in the literatures. The comparison revealed that the helical absorber tube provides a similar performance to existing tube bundle absorber in heat and mass transfer. As a result, the heat and mass transfer characteristics of helical type absorber showed the possibility of the reduction in size and weight of small] capacity absorption chiller/heater.

  • This paper introduces the physical phenomena involved in Direct Contact Heat Exchangers (DCHXs) and also investigates the possibility of applying of EIT(Electrical Impedance Tomography) technique for capturing the images of dispersed phases as they stream through a stagnant body of water. A number of cases are studied where two dimensional cross-sectional static images are given for fictitious and actual masses present in a column of water(saline solution). In most direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchangers, oil or hydrocarbon with a density different(lighter or heavier) from water is normally used as dispersed working fluid. The main difficulty that arises with this arrangement lies in the elucidation of complicated flow field where the dispersed phase fluid tends to change its shape and size constantly during its journey through the other phase(water). This paper presents a number of results with different types of dispersed phases that are immiscible with water. The EIT technique has been employed in this context to test its applicability in capturing the dynamic images of dispersed phases. It shows static images of dispersed phases where dynamic images could be obtained by simply extending the algorithms and strategies employed in the present analysis.

  • Separate heat pipe exchanger is considered as the high thermal transportation equipment, because evaporator and condenser are separately positioned in the long distance. Its characteristics are that the working fluid is circulated naturally by the position height of two exchangers. But the operating characteristics are restricted by the temperature of hot and cold fluid, flow pattern and diameter of vapor line, etc. in this study, the vapor pressure and the minimum height of two exchangers are studied about the factors restricting the operating characteristics.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the optimum drawing parameter for BAS121 welded tubes. The BAS121 aluminium alloy tubes with 25 mm in external diameter and 1.3 mm in thickness for heat-exchangers were manufactured by high frequency induction welding with the V shaped convergence angle $6.5^{\circ}$ and power input 55 kW. With increasing the reduction of area ($13,\;21\%$) by drawing, tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased. With increasing the reduction of area by drawing, hardness in weld metal increased rapidly, while that of base metal increased slowly. In the specimen with the outer diameter smaller than 22 mm, hardness of weld metal was higher than that of base metal. The optimum drawing parameter of area reduction in BAS121 alloys was estimated about $13\%$ because of the work hardening of welds.

  • Thermodynamic cycle analysis is presented to estimate the maximum liquefaction rate of hydrogen for various systems using a Gifford-McMahon(GM) cryocooler. Since the present authors` previous experiments showed that the gaseous hydrogen was liquefied approximately at the rate of 5.1 mg/s from the direct contact with a commercial two-stage GM refrigerator, this study has been proposed to predict how much the liquefaction rate can be increased in different configurations using the GM cooler and with improved heat exchangers. The optimal operating conditions have been analytically sought with real properties of normal hydrogen for the Linde-Hampson(L-H) system precooled by single-stage GM, the direct-contact system with two-stage GM, the L-H system precooled by two-stage GM, and the direct-contact system with helium GM-JT (Joule-Thomson). The maximum liquefaction rate has been predicted to be only about 7 times greater than the previous experiment, even though the highly effective heat exchangers may be employed. It is concluded that the liquefaction rate is limited mainly because of the cooling capacity of the commercially available GM cryocoolers and a practical scale of hydrogen liquefaction is possible only if the GM cooler has a greater capacity at 70-100 K.

  • Aluminum plate heat exchanger, rotary wheel heat exchanger, and heat pipe heat exchanger have been used (or ventilation heat recovery in the air-conditioning system. The purpose of this research is to develop high efficiency plastic plate heat exchanger which can substitute aluminum plate heat exchanger. Because thermal conductivity of plastic is quite small compared to that of aluminum, various heat transfer enhancement techniques are applied in the design of plastic plates. Five types of heat exchanger model are designed and manufactured, which are plate type, plate-fin type, turbulent promoter type, corrugate type, and dimple type. Thermal performance and pressure loss of each heat exchangers are measured in various operating conditions, and compared each other. Test results show that heat transfer performance of corrugate type, turbulent promoter type, and dimple type are increases about $43\%$, $14\%$, and $33\%$ at the equivalent fan power compared to those of plate type, respectively. On the other hand, the heat transfer performance of plate-fin type decreases $9\%$ because fins can not play their own role.
