Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of inbalance of autonomic nerve system on peripheral facial palsy patients in comparison of Heart Rate Variability results of healthy control group with that of peripheral facial palsy group. Methods : The peripheral facial palsy patiens who visited the Dongguk university Bundang oriental medicine hospital from April to June in 2005 were tested Heart Rate Variability items which are Mean Heart Rate(MHRT), Standard Deviation of all the Normal RR intervals (SDNN), Root Mean Square of Successive Differences Between The Normal Heart Beats(RMSSD), Total Power(TP), Low Frequency, High Frequency, ratio between the Low Frequency and High Frequency power(LF/HF ratio). The Heart Rate Variability test results of peripheral facial palsy group were compared with the HRV test results of healthy control group who didn't have nervous disease, musculoskeletal disease, heart problem and pain for the past 6 months. Results : 1. MHRT was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.18). 2. SDNN was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.41). 3. RMSSD was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.93). 4. TP was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=094). 5. LF and HF were not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group((P=0.34, 0.30). 6. LF/HF ratio was significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.04). Conclusion : LF/HF ratio is generally used as autonomic nerve system evaluation and there was significantly statistical difference between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group.

It is known that blood circulation in human body causes the skin tone to change concurrently with heartbeats. A number of apps have been developed to measure the heartbeat using smartphone camera; however, no any further analysis is performed. In this paper we propose an algorithm that detects heartbeats from the phone's camera and further extracts the heart rate variability (HRV). We compare the HRV extracted from the camera with the HRV extracted from the electrocardiogram. We estimated a number of commonly used HRV characteristics and compared them. Our results show that smartphone camera leads to slightly overestimated characteristics although the difference in extracted HRV signals is negligible. As a consequence we suggest that a smartphone camera can be employed in a quick heart diagnosis and diagnosis of autonomic nervous system.
Objectives : The study is performed to investigate the influence of psychological stress on neck muscles tone and heart rate variability(HRV). Methods : This study was carried out with the data from stress response index score(SRI), surface electromyography(sEMG) and HRV. First subjects were divided into two group according to the SRI points. Subjects in group A had points of SRI in which lower than 30 points. Subjects in group B had points of SRI in which higher than 30 points. Then we investigated how to difference of the index of sEMG and HRV according to each groups. Results : In this study, the muscle contraction of both upper trapezius muscle in stress group were higher than non-stress group significantly. Complexity, root mean square of successive differences of R-R intervals(RMSSD), standard deviation difference between adjacent normal to normal intervals(SDSD), high frequency oscillation power(Ln(HF)), normalized HF(Norm HF) in stress group were lower than non-stress group significantly and normalized LF(Norm LF) was higher. Conclusions : This results show that the stress was associated with neck muscle condition and autonomic nervous system.
To determine the effect of posture change on autonomic activity and to investigate valid parameters to reflex the autonomic activity from time-series pupil size data, a posture-related experiment was performed with 15 subjects, which involved measuring their electrocardiograms and pupil sizes. The experimental procedure consisted of three-sequence postures-supine, sitting and upright-for 5 minutes each, with rest sessions between postures. The subjects were notified of the entire experimental procedure. The parameters of the subjects' heart rate variability showed significant differences between the postures (heart rate: 63-70-80 beat, normalized low frequency power: 28-50-75, normalized high frequency power: 72-49-25 and ratio: 0.5-1.2-4.4 in supine-sitting-upright position respectively) as did the parameters of their mean pupil sizes (41300-53900-53700 pixels respectively) and the major frequencies (the third trend: 0.23-0.2-0.18 Hz respectively) of their pupil size variability according to changes in their autonomic activities induced by posture change. The experiment thus proved that posture change affects autonomic activity and that such activity can be estimated by the parameters of pupil size as similar as heart rate variability.
Object : This study was designed to assess the change of heart rate variability (HRV) during stimulation test among the patients with major depressive disorder. Methods : 15 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 15 normal controls were enrolled in this study. We sequentially measured HRV at baseline, during cognitive stimuli and emotional stimuli. Results : There are significant differences between the two groups in HRV index, TINN on baseline state and under cognitive stimulus. Conclusion : Stimulation protocol using HRV can be useful in estimating autonomic nervous function.
Standard methods estimating the power spectral density(PSD) from an irregularly sampled cardiac event series require deriving a new evenly-spaced signal applicable to those methods. To avoid that requirement, in this study, the power spectrum of heart rate variability was estimated by Lomb-Scargle's algorithm, which is a means of obtaining PSD estimates directly from irregularly sampled timeseries observed in astronomy. To assess the performance of Lomb-Scargle algorithm in the power spectral analysis of heart rate variability, it was applied to various cardiac event series derived through integral pulse frequency modulation model(IPFM) simulation and from real ECG signals, and the resultant power spectra was compared with those obtained by a conventional method based on the FFT. In result, it is concluded that Lomb-Scargle's periodogram is very effective in the power spectral analysis of heart rate variability, especially in the presence of arrhythmia and/or dropouts of cardiac events.
1. Objectives The purpose of this research is to find out the Sasang Constitutional difference in Heart Rate Variability. 2. Methods We enrolled 8498 workers who tested for Heart Rate Variability(HRV) from September 1, 2005 to November 28, 2005 except works whose body constitusions were undetermined according to QSCCII. 3. Results & Conclusions The result of HRV of autonomic activity and stress resistance were arranged in the order of Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeumin. On the other hand Stress Index and Fatigue Index were arranged in the order of Taeumin, Soyangin and Soeumin. But autonomic balance was no significance relationship between Sasang Constitutions. This research has shown that there is a statistical significance between the HRV and Sasang Constitutions. The findings indicated that HRV could be useful mean to make a diagnosis of Sasang Constitution or apprehended Constitutional differences.

In the present study, our aim is to investigate whether responses to the head-up tilt (HUT) on nonlinear properties of heart rate variability (HRV) in young and elderly subjects are different or not. Thirteen young-healthy subjects ($24.5{\pm}3.7$ years) and 18 old-aged healthy subjects ($74.5{\pm}7.4$ years) participated in this study. An electrocardiogram (ECG) in the supine posture, at $0^{\circ}$, and in the standing posture, at $70^{\circ}$ of head-up tilt, was recorded. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and approximate entropy (ApEn), measures of short-/long-term correlation properties and overall complexity of heart rate (HR) respectively, along with spectral components of HR variability (HRV) were analyzed for both the supine and HUT postures. We observed that the short-term fractal exponent ${\alpha}_1$ increased during HUT posture (F(1, 29) = 39.79, P = 0.000), especially, the young subjects showed a significantly higher values compared to the elderly subjects. ApEn significantly decreased (F(1, 29) = 8.61, P = 0.006) during HUT posture. HUT posture decreased the complexity in HR dynamics and increased short-term fractal exponent values in young subjects but not in elderly subjects. These results imply that there are differences of response to HUT on nonlinear properties between young and elderly subjects.
