Background: This study compares and analyzes the degree of oral health information literacy by 25% for upper and lower grades to assess how differences in mothers' oral health information literacy affect infants' oral health behavior. Methods: The study surveyed 201 mothers with infants and children using a 36 question survey tool. Cross-analysis was conducted to determine the difference in oral health information literacy between the upper and the lower 25%. Results: Comparing 25% of the upper and lower grades of verbal oral health information literacy scores, the word with the most significant difference in the correct answer was resin. An item asking about the time to eat after fluoride varnish application showed the most significant difference in the correct answer on the functional oral health information literacy scale. Mothers' oral and functional oral health information literacy scores showed that verbal literacy was statistically significant for brushing guidance after children's meals, brushing guidance before children's bedtime, food intake restrictions before bedtime, and restrictions on consumption of cavity-inducing foods (p<0.05). Functional literacy was statistically significant in the post-brushing test of children and the correct brushing method map items (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result of comparing and analyzing the upper and lower 25% of the mother's oral health information literacy, it was found that the mother's oral health information literacy affected the infant's oral health behavior. Therefore, systematic education is needed to raise literacy by grasping the level of oral health information literacy of mothers, and oral health education by level according to oral health information literacy should be developed.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the relations among psycho-social factors regarding child neglect and abuse using the data from the 2013 Korea National Survey on Children and Youth. Methods: Data from a sample of 1,062 primary caregivers with young children were analyzed with the SPSS and AMOS programs to examine the interrelationships among depression, parenting stress, marital satisfaction, parent-child attachment, and child neglect or maltreatment. Results: Depression, stress, and attachment had a direct influence on child neglect and abuse. Satisfaction with marital relationship, parenting stress, and attachment were found to play mediating roles in accounting for child neglect and abuse, explaining 12% of the variance. The results of multi group path analysis showed that some coefficients were different according to the age group of the children. For caregivers with infants, parenting stress did not predict either attachment or child maltreatment, whereas for caregivers with toddlers, depression did not have a significant effect on attachment. Conclusion: In order to prevent child maltreatment, efforts should be made to develop community-based psycho-social support interventions focused on marital relationship as well as parent-child dyads and to provide practical child care support.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate mothers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices of infection prevention for their children. Methods: In this descriptive study, data were collected using a questionnaire. A total 157 mothers of young children were surveyed regarding their knowledge, attitudes, and practices of infection prevention. Results: The mean score of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of infection prevention in mothers was found to be above average. There were significant differences in knowledge according to whether the mother was employed (t=2.82, p=.005) and in attitudes according to the mother's age (t=2.13, p=.035). In addition, a significant correlation was found between knowledge and attitudes (r=.16, p=.014), and between attitudes and practices (r=.50, p<.001). Conclusion: This research provides baseline information to understand mothers' approaches to infection prevention for their children, and it may serve as a basis for providing educational programs that help infection prevention.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of mothers on their children's oral health and their concern for that by socio-demographic characteristics and the relationship of their awareness of methods of dental-caries prevention to their practice of the methods. Methods : The subjects in this study were 337 guardians of preschoolers at kindergartens and daycare centers. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 25 to May 27, 2011, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. Results : 1.Self-rated concern for children's oral health, 87.7 percent and 12.1 percent replied, "So-so." Whether they were working or not and whether they were mainly responsible for child rearing made significant differences to that(p<.05). 2. As to subjective awareness of their children's oral health, the largest group of the mothers answered "So-so." (44.9%) The second replied that their children were in good oral health(40.5%), and the third group in poor oral health(14.2%). 3. The relationship between self-rated concern for their children's oral health and awareness of methods of caries prevention, statistically significant differences were found according to toothbrushing education and sealant(p<.05). There were no statistically significant differences in practice, but application of fluoride was the least. 4. The relationship between self-rated awareness for their children's oral health and awareness of the preventive methods of caries, there were statistically significant gaps in awareness of toothbrushing education(p<.05). In practice, statistically significant gaps were found in practice of toothbrushing education and sugar-intake restriction(p<.01). 5. In regard to the correlation between awareness and practice of the preventive methods of caries, awareness of all the factors involving toothbrushing education, sealant, application of fluoride and restriction of sugar intake had a significant positive correlation to practice of them. Better awareness led to better practice. Conclusions : In order to ensure children's successful oral health care, more authentic education of how to prevent dental caries should be offered by experts such as dental hygienists and dentists. Especially, detailed information on application of fluoride, restriction of sugar intake and pit and sealant should be provided for mothers to help their children to stay away from dental caries.
Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the relationship of perception of parenting attitude, behavior problems and resilience of school age children. Methods: Participants were 131 children enrolled in the 4th to 6th grades. Data were collected from November 29 to December 6, 2010 using a self-report questionnaire. The questionnaire included the Parental Bonding Instrument, Korean version of Youth Self-Report, and Resilience. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in resilience according to gender, relationship with peers, academic achievement and school satisfaction. Resilience showed a positive correlation with parental bonding attitude and negative correlation with problem behavior in the children. Conclusion: This result suggests that interventions focusing on parenting attitude to enhance resilience should be developed to help school age children.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of uncertainty and anxiety in families of hospitalized children. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires which were constructed to include parent's perception of uncertainty and state anxiety. The subjects consisted of 126 families of hospitalized children in one university-affiliated hospital in Daegu. The data were analyzed by the SPSS program. The results were as follows; 1. The mean score of uncertainty was 64.70 (Range=31-95). The mean scores of subsets of the uncertainty were followed as: lack of clarity (2.59), unpredictability (2.46), lack of information (2.22) and ambiguity (2.14). 2. The mean score of state anxiety was 47.93 (Range=20-67). 3.The level of uncertainty was positively correlated to the level of state anxiety. 4. The level of anxiety was different depending on their religion and monthly income. The above findings indicated that the level of uncertainty and the state anxiety in families of hospitalized children were positively correlated. Therefore, nursing intervention for reducing uncertainty and anxiety and improving coping method should be provided for families of hospitalized children.
This study was designed to investigate the level of mother's anxiety and to exent knowledge about critical factors of mothers who has hospitalized school aged children. The subject of this study were 395 mothers who have hospitalized school-aged children in 9 different general hospital in Seoul. This outcome measures of mothers' anxiety were tested by Spielberger' STAI. The findings from this study were as follows : 1. The mean score of mother's anxiety was 46.7. 2. The level of mother's anxiety by mother's age, educational level, relegion and experience of loss of children showed significantly difference. Also level of mother's anxiety by the type of disease, hospital days and birth order of children showed significantly difference.

Objectives: This study was conducted to compare health behavior between obese children and those with standard body weight, analyzing the correlation in their health behavior, and further making it useful data for the development of programs for a better education on health. Methods: To achieve the goal of this survey as mentioned, we have carried out a research targeting on a total of 636 elementary school students, 505 children of standard body weight and 131 children of obesity, all of whom belong to elementary school students in Seoul, the capital city of Korea. And we have itemized the research into 'eating habits', 'physical activity, 'dieting experience in the past', and 'stress and release management' in order to spot the specific health behavior leading to obesity. Results: 1. Factors for diseases mainly from obesity were statistically significantly differentdepending on degree of the subjects' self-respect and a history of obesity in their families, father($x^2$=7.172, p=.007), mother($x^2$=9.011, p=.003), and siblings($x^2$=12.431, p=.000). 2. Regarding the subjects' eating habits, some items were statistically significantly different: taking algae($x^2$=3.324, p=.043), eating breakfast($x^2$=6.070, p=.010), and eating fast($x^2$=8.551, p=.002). 3. There were some statistically significant differences in the subjects' dieting experience. For the latest 1 year, they made some attempts for that: fasting($x^2$=4.229, p=.040), reduction of eating($x^2$=25.377, p=.000), eating one meal a day($x^2$=5.582, p=.018) 4. OR(Odd Ratio)of Percieued obesity was 0.15 in the subjects' under weight than normal weight. And there was OR(Odd Ratio) 11.72 in the subjects' over weight. We can witness obese children think that they are over weight(p=.000).
Background: The Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) is a measure of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents. This study examined the impact of dental fear on the OHRQoL by comparing the COHIP scores of children with and without dental fear. Methods: The OHRQoL in children and adolescents was measured using the Korean version of the COHIP. In total, 102 students (49 boys and 53 girls) filled in a questionnaire designed to evaluate dental fear and the OHRQoL in 2012 and 2014. Results: In 2012, the group without dental fear showed higher COHIP scores than the group with dental fear; the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. In 2014, the same pattern was observed, but the difference was non-significant for all COHIP items other than those pertaining to social-emotional well-being. Comparison of COHIP scores according to changes in fear showed that the group with continuous dental fear showed significantly lower overall COHIP, negative COHIP, and low social-emotional wellbeing scores, than the group without continuous fear in 2012 and 2014. Conclusion: We expected children with dental fear to have poor oral health, affecting their OHRQoL; however, dental fear did not affect the OHRQoL.

A study of fluoride effects on teeth of school children was conducted in order to determine the usefulness of fluoride for preventing dental caries. Nine hundred and thirty six(936) elementary school children were selected from Chongju where children drank fluoridated water. Eight hundred and thirty six(836) from Seoul where children applied fluoride topically, and eight hundred and three(803) from Kumi where the children drank non fluoridated water(control). DMFs of school children were compared by the sources of fluoride. This study was conducted from May 1, through June 15, 2000. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The DMF rate of male school children topically applying fluoride was 51.4%, that of female children was 56.1%, and that of both males and females was 54.0%, The DMF rate of male children of control group was 72.4%, that of females was 77.5% and that of both males and females was 74.8%. 2. The DMF rate of male children drinking fluoridated tap water was 56.1%, that of females was 54.1%, and that of both males and females was 55.5%. The rates of control group were 72.4% for males, 77.5% for females and 74.8% for male and female children respectively. 3. The difference of DMF rates between the group of children who drank fluoridated water and applied fluoride topically, and control group was statistically significant. 4. The difference of DMF rates between the children who drank fluoridated water and the children who applied fluoride topically were not statistically significant. 5. The difference of DMFT rates between 5th graders who applied fluoride topically and the 5th graders of control group was not statistically significant. However, the difference of DMFT rates of the 6th graders who applied fluoride topically and the same graders of control group were statistically significant. The difference of DMF rates between 5th and 6th graders who drank fluoridated tap water and the same graders of control group was statistically significant. 6. The difference of DMFT rates between children drinking fluoridated tap water and children applying fluoride topically was statistically significant.
