Therefore, it is required to educate general publics and the orthodontic patients and also promote the importance of usage of oral hygiene devices.
A total of nine oral health educators for 17 persons with developmental disabilities conducted oral health education once a week for four weeks. The oral health educators provided oral health knowledge education and individual toothbrushing teachings. The developmentally disabled people in their 20s and 30s conducted oral health education without a guardian. Ten people who completed all the four pieces of training had no significant improvement in the toothbrushing method and the recommended number of toothbrushing sessions a day, as well as a lack of growth in oral health knowledge. However, 58.8% of the individuals expressed satisfaction with the oral health education program, whereas, 52.9% expressed the desire for a re-education. Although the ratio of teachers to students was 1:2, and the oral health education conducted four times, it was insufficient to promote a successful oral health behavior or knowledge for people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, as a suggestion, oral health education for people with developmental disabilities ought to proceed with their guardians to promote the success of the training.
This study has been performed for patients who visited dental clinic in Daegu and kyungpook area. The oral health care, dental treatments about the use of oral hygiene devices were obtained through self-administering questionnaires from 1 to 30, August, 2006. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The average percent of using dental floss was 34.2%, followed by interproximal brush was 33.9%, mouthrinse was 33.5%, electric toothbrush was 19.6%, orthodontic brush was 10.6%, and tongue cleaner was 10.2%. 2. Poor to perceive oral health was 36.4% in the patients who perceived oral hygiene device, and there was statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Moderate to perceive oral health was 40.8% in the patients who using oral hygiene device, and there was also statistically significant difference (p<0.05). 3. In the patients who 3 or 4 times toothbrushing a day, the average percent of perceived oral hygiene device was 67.7%, and the average percent of using oral hygiene device was 59.8% (p<0.05). In the patients who had experience of toothbrush education, the average percent of perceived oral hygiene device was 81.8%, and the average percent of using oral hygiene device was 58.1% (p<0.05). 4. The average percent of perceived oral hygiene device was 67.9% in dental implant treated patient, and was 69.0% in patients with cold teeth (p<0.05). The average percent of using oral hygiene device was 64.2% in prosthesis treated patient, and was 83.3% in patients with cold teeth (p<0.05). The average percent of non-using oral hygiene device was 67.6% in orthodontic treated patient (p<0.05). 5. In patient with periodontal disease, the average percent of using interproximal brush was 44.3%, followed by dental floss was 35.4%, mouthrinse was 27.8%, and electric toothbrush was 21.5%. In prosthesis treated patient, the average percent of using interproximal brush was 31.6%, followed by dental floss was 28.9%, and mouthrinse was 23.7%. In orthodontic treated patient, the average percent of using orthodontic brush was 82.4%, followed by interproximal brush was 64.7%, and mouthrinse was 47.1%. Objectives: This study presents the basic data necessary to explore the methods used of Korean dental hygienists to resolve oral health inequalities in Korea via reviewing the professionalization trend of American dental hygienists. Methods: The supervision levels of American dental hygienists, and system of dental therapists were analyzed using the data published by the relevant associations. Results: In America, dental hygienists help address oral health inequalities. However, due to limitations in the supervision levels and scope of practice of dental hygienists, the autonomy of dental hygienists was expanded, and mid-level practitioner were employed. The autonomy for dental hygiene practice was higher in public than in private in America. Some states have introduced dental therapists as mid-level practitioners. Their practice settings have limitations such as serving low-income, uninsured, and underserved patients or serving in a dental health professional shortage area. Conclusions: It is necessary to expand the autonomy of dental hygienists based on their profession. In particular, it is suggested that they start with the low-risk level practices. Further, it is necessary to introduce a dental hygiene specialist system specialized for fields with high social demands.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of preventive treatment experience on scaling fear level. Methods: A total of 259 adults who had visited the dental clinic were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows. Statistical analysis of the collected data was performed using the SPSS WIN 20.0 statistical program. The general characteristics, scaling experience, and the characteristics of the subjects were analyzed. Frequency of scaling according to general characteristics was analyzed by independent sample t-test, Scaling fears according to treatment experience were tested by t-test. Correlation analysis was performed for scaling fears according to the reliability of dental hygienist. Regression analysis was carried out to investigate factors affecting scaling fear. Results: Level of fear during scaling was higher in females (3.03) than in males (2.54) and that after scaling was scored higher in females (2.68) than in males (2.34) by general characteristics (p<0.001). The adults who were not healthy in oral health showed the highest levels of fear during (3.29) and after (3.00) scaling by oral health status (p<0.001). Adults who had brushing education experience showed lower fear level than those who did not after scaling (p<0.01) according to the experiences of preventive treatments. With respect to the correlation of trust level to the dental hygienists with the scaling fears, it showed higher in the trust level (-0.688) as lower level of scaling fear (-0.642) in the scaling (p<0.01). Confidence level of dental hygienist (-0.661), brushing education experience (-0.121), and oral health status (-0.121) were influenced upon the regression analysis. Conclusions: Oral health education and dental hygiene education are increasing. It is thought that active efforts are needed to promote and maintain oral health.
The purpose of this study was to establish an effective strategy for smoking cessation programs of adult by examining the relationship between smoking and oral characteristics in 166 men in their 20s in Ulsan and Busan. As a result, there was a difference in dental fear (χ2=4.72, p<0.01), tooth stain (χ2=10.22, p<0.01) and others perception of bad breath (χ2=7.35, p<0.01). Smokers had 2.03 times more dental fear, 3.26 times more tooth stain, and 2.51 times more other perception of bad breath higher than non smokers. Therefore, effective smoking cessation education should be continuously operated in order to prevent 20-year-old men from leading to lifetime smoking.
To improve the oral health status of Korean people, it is necessary to encourage proper oral hygiene management habits, such as toothbrushing, through appropriate health promotion techniques. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the removal of plaque and tooth abrasion using ultra-soft (filament 0.11~0.12 mm) and soft toothbrushes for toothbrushing. The plaque removal was performed using a dentiform and Arti-spray, and the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index was calculated as the sum total score divided by the total number of surfaces. In the abrasivity experiment, according to the number of brushings, a micro Vickers hardness tester was used, and a sample in the range of 280~380 Vickers hardness number was selected. The number of toothbrushing stroke were 1,800 (2 months), 5,400 (6 months), 10,800 (12 months), and 21,600 (24 months). The tooth abrasion was measured using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 and a p-value <0.05 was considered significant. According to the results, there was no statistically significant difference in the degree of plaque removal between ultra-soft and soft toothbrushes. The difference in tooth abrasion between before and after toothbrushing was found to be greater with the soft toothbrushes than with the ultra-soft toothbrushes. Therefore, the ultra-soft toothbrush not only lowers tooth damage by reducing tooth abrasion, but also shows a similar ability to remove plaque as soft toothbrushes.
Background: As the medical knowledge base grows at an accelerating rate, evidence-based clinical performance becomes increasingly important for providing quality care. Previous studies have highlighted the need to promote job crafting to actualize evidence-based practical skills in the medical field. This study aimed to investigate the degree of evidence-based practice among dental hygienists and assess the impact of job crafting on the evidence-based practical skills of dental hygienists. Methods: Dental hygienists working at dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province were surveyed between February 28 and April 6, 2023. The sample was comprised of 267 participants. The hypotheses were tested independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analyses using SPSS 29.0. Results: The degree of job crafting by dental hygienists demonstrated significant differences based on educational attainment, workplace size, and workplace type. Evidence-based practical skills exhibited significant variations based on educational attainment and job position. All job crafting subfactors demonstrated positive correlations with evidence-based practical skills. The job crafting subfactors affecting the evidence-based practical skills of dental hygienists were 'increasing structural job resources' and 'increasing challenging job demands,' which together explained 38.7% of the variance in evidence-based practical skills. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that job crafting was positively and significantly correlated with evidence-based practical skills. To strengthen the job crafting ability of dental hygienists, improving environmental conditions and fostering an organizational culture that motivates continued participation in education is necessary. The development and promotion of programs that enable learning of the latest evidence should be actively pursued. Additionally, regular attendance at workshops and participation in organizational evidence-based practice education programs are necessary.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the perceived symptoms of oral and temporomandibular joint disorders in adults and to analyze the factors affecting subjective symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. Methods: 249 adults over 20 years old who had subjective symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders were surveyed and analyzed. Independent t-test and ANOVA test were used to examine the relationship between oral habits and temporomandibular joint disorder according to general characteristics. $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test was used for post-hoc analysis. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors affecting oral habits and temporomandibular joint disorder. Results: First, the factors affecting oral and habitual behaviors were married (p<0.05) and monthly income between 1 million~1.9 million won (p<0.001), higher temporomandibular joint disorder (p<0.01) And the degree of habit was increased. Second, the factors affecting temporomandibular joint disorder were increased in occupation (p<0.05) and the degree of oral habit (p<0.01). Conclusions: In conclusion, it was confirmed that oral habit influences temporomandibular joint disorder. Especially, it is suggested that prevention and promotion of temporomandibular joint disorder are needed to recognize the removal of oral habits.
