This paper presents an approach to optimally design the air-bearing surface (ABS) of the optical flying head for near-field recording technology (NFR). NFR is an optical recording technology using very small beam spot size by overcoming the limit of beam diffraction. One of the most Important problems in NFR is a head disk interface (HDI) issue over the recording band during the operation. A multi-criteria optimization problem is formulated to enhance the flying performances over the entire recording band during the steady state. The optimal solution of the slider, whose target flying height is 50 nm, is automatically obtained. The flying height during the steady state operation becomes closer to the target values than those fur the initial one. The pitch and roll angles are also kept within suitable ranges over the recording band. Especially, all of the air-bearing stiffness are drastically increased by the optimized geometry of the air bearing surface.
Mobile devices have become an important part of daily life. This is especially true of laptop PCs, which are portable enough to be used almost anywhere. Laptop PCs, however, cannot be nomadic if each component is not robust enough to endure rugged laptop operating environment. Generally, external shock makes collision on head-disk interface and damage to read-write performance. To minimize the likelihood of failure, shock analysis must be incorporated into the design of hard disk drive in laptop. This research explores the structure modification of laptop HDD base, for improving shock performance using finite element analysis which considers the flexibility of whole HDD structure. FE model is verified by modal test and finely tuned. Then we obtained the transmitted acceleration of spindle and pivot and the relative displacement between disk and slider head as shock response. Based on shock simulation, the structural dynamics modification is performed and the primary design parameters are extracted.
Fundamental issues and general procedures of modeling the head disk interface (HDI) in order to provide design criteria for future ultra-low flying sliders are given. Intermittent contact and gaseous rarefaction effects are discussed using nonconventional kinetic theory. To illustrate the simulation results, we modeled IBM 3370 taper flat sliders and positive/negative "bow tie" sliders. Several alternative HDI concepts for future disk drives - viscoelastic bearings, a hybrid system, and contact recording - are also briefly discussed.
As a means to reduce stiction in the landing zone padded sliders can be used. In this work the performance of padded slider was investigated using a commercial spin stand. The friction and acoustic emission signals were measured during the experiment. It is shown that padded slider show superior friction and AE characteristics. However, the wear properties of the pads should be further Improved.
It's general a trend to use the load/unload mechanism in the small form factor HDD, like 2.5", 1.8" and 1.0". The load/unload mechanism has tittle opportunity of head/media contact during the disk spin-up and down. However, the load/unload mechanism needs the precise integration technology with slider, suspension ramp, load/unload velocity and so on, and all of these components should be designed simultaneously, not an individually. In this paper, we measured the load/unload velocity in the drive level, and executed the load/unload dynamics with this velocity profiles. We could find the current load/unload mechanism suitable to the long load/unload test.
This research investigates the electromechanical characteristics of a spindle motor in a free-falling mobile hard disk drive before unexpected shock. Electromechanical simulation includes a time-stepping finite element analysis of the magnetic field in a speed controlled brushless DC motor and dynamic analysis of the stationary and rotating part linked by the fluid dynamic bearing under the free-falling condition. Analysis results show that the dynamic characteristics of the rotating spindle system during free-falling state have an effect on the relative motion between the stationary and rotating part of HDD. It results from the variation of reaction force in the bearing area due to the gravity force exerted on the rotating part of HDD, and the free-falling condition can be detected by observing the signal of the spindle motor and disk-head interface without using an accelerometer.

Most of hard disk drives currently employ fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) for their rotor support. Stiffness of the FDB is affected by many design factors such as bearing clearance, fluid viscosity, and rotational speed. For the high rotating speed HDDs stiffness of the rotor is normally high enough to accomodate load disturbances. However small form factor HDDs that are to be operated in low power consumption are often designed with low stiffness rotors. Although the low stiffness rotor clearly benefits low power operation, it could damage the entire motor structure or head disk interface even by a light mechanical load disturbance such as shock or vibration. In addition, since a single channel HDD does not provide gram load equilibrium in axial direction the rotor could be tilted and make a hard contact to stator. A non-symmetric groove pattern could successfully compensate the tilted rotor angle during operation.
A large area negative metal ion beam source is developed. Kinetic ion beam of the incident metal ions yields a whole nucleation and growth phenomena compared to the conventional thin film deposition processes. At the initial deposition step one can engineer the surface and interface by tuning the energy of the incident metal ion beams. Smoothness and shallow implantation can be tailored according to the desired application process. Surface chemistry and nucleation process is also controlled by the energy of the direct metal ion beams. Each individual metal ion beams with specific energy undergoes super-thermodynamic reactions and nucleation. degree of formation of tetrahedral Sp3 carbon films and beta-carbon nitride directly depends on the energy of the ion beams. Grain size and formation of polycrystalline Si, at temperatures lower than 500deg. C is obtained and controlled by the energy of the incident Si-ion beams. The large area metal ion source combines the advantages of those magnetron sputter and SKIONs prior cesium activated metal ion source. The ion beam source produces uniform amorphous diamond films over 6 diameter. The films are now investigated for applications such as field emission display emitter materials, protective coatings for computer hard disk and head, and other protective optical coatings. The performance of the ion beam source and recent applications will be presented.
