Proportional hazards model can be used to develop a realistic approach to determine the performance of a system. The proportional hazards model is typically applied for a group of equipments to assess the importance of factors that may influence the reliability of a system. In this paper we considered the interarrival times of a maintained system for the analysis of reliability, maintainability and availability. In order to demonstrate the proposed approach, an example is presented.
The amount of damages caused by natural hazards is consistently growing due to the unusual weather and extreme events. At the same time, property damage by natural hazards is rapidly increasing as well. Hence, we need systematic anti-disaster activities and consulting that can react to such a situation. To address these needs, we investigated and analyzed insured claim payouts from natural hazards by administrative area, and calculate the risk index utilizing GIS. According to the index, this map is identifying the areas of greatest natural hazard risk. The ranking of natural disaster vulnerability based on the risk index, and risk grades were divided into five based on the ranking. This map integrates the natural hazard losses to assist in comprehensive and effective loss prevention activities using analysis of regional loss claims from natural hazards. Moreover, this map can be as utilized as loss mitigation and prevention activities to verify the distribution of exposure and hazards.
In the inspection of workplace hazards/risk factors by specialized institutions dedicated to safety management, inspection reports vary based on the inspectors, who lack the authority to enforce improvement of workplace hazards/risk factors. Thus, improvement and accident rates remain steady without decreasing. This study performed a regression analysis on the relationship between improvement and accident rates of categorized inspection items by classifying hazards/risk factors from inspection reports submitted by a specialized safety management institution in Chungbuk after inspecting 10 food and beverage manufacturers over the past three years. The hazards/risk factors were classified into five categories: mechanical, electrical, chemical, human, and environmental. The regression analysis revealed that the improvement rate of hazards/risk factors inspected by the specialized safety management institution influenced accident rates. To enhance improvement rates based on these findings, this study prioritized the correction of the five most frequently cited inspection items with the lowest improvement rates in each area. Based on these inspection items, this study suggested a checklist for use in workplace safety inspections of food manufacturers. This proposed checklist is expected to reduce accident rates in food manufacturing facilities. Currently, guidance and inspection of workplaces are mainly focused on accident rates rather than correcting hazards/risks. Thus, accident rates remain unchanged as workplace risks are inadequately improved according to the unique characteristics of each workplace. When conducting workplace guidance and inspection, policy measures and inspection methods are warranted to increase the improvement rate of hazards/risks.
The system safety must be ensured before customization. There was no specific requirement representing system safety in Korea until now. So we should draw safety requirements to guarantee system safety for the first time. In this paper. the hazard identification and analysis to derive the safety requirements on the train control system are carried out. To analyze hazard, we have to deduce system functions. identify related hazards, derive the effects of the hazards, analyze current risks. define the target risks of the system, and deduce the alternative plans to reduce the effects of the hazards. For the case study, Preliminary Hazard Analysis(PHA) of the Automatic Train Control (ATC) System for Electrical Hazards are carried out.
Background: At present, no short standard questionnaire exists for assessing and comparing major work organization hazards in the workplaces of the United States. Methods: We conducted a series of psychometric tests (content validity, factor analysis, differential-item functioning analysis, reliability, and concurrent validity) to validate and identify core items and scales for major work organization hazards using the data from the 2002-2014 General Social Surveys (GSSs), including the Quality of Worklife (QWL) questionnaire. In addition, an extensive literature review was undertaken to find other major work organization hazards which were not addressed in the GSS. Results: Although the overall validity of the GSS-QWL questionnaire was satisfactory in the psychometric tests, some GSS-QWL items of work-family conflict, psychological job demands, job insecurity, use of skills on the job, and safety climate scales appeared to be weak. In the end, 33 questions (31 GSS-QWL and 2 GSS) were chosen as the least, but best validated core questions and included in a new short standard questionnaire (called the Healthy Work Survey [HWS]). And their national norms were established for comparisons. Furthermore, based on the literature review, fifteen more questions for assessing other significant work organization hazards (e.g., lack of scheduling control, emotional demands, electronic surveillance, wage theft) were included in the new questionnaire. Thus, the HWS includes 48 questions in total for assessing traditional and emerging work organization hazards, which covers seven theoretical domains: work schedule/arrangement, control, support, reward, demands, safety, and justice. Conclusions: The HWS is a short standard questionnaire for assessing work organization hazards which can be used as a first step toward the risk management of major work organization hazards in the workplaces of the US.
The objectives of this study are to identify the survival function (hazard function) of small and medium enterprises by using technology rating data for the companies guaranteed by Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC), and to figure out the factors that affects their survival. To serve the purposes, this study uses Kaplan-Meier Analysis as a non-parametric method and Cox proportional hazards model as a semi-parametric one. The 17,396 guaranteed companies that assessed from July 1st in 2005 to December 31st in 2009 are selected as samples (16,504 censored data and 829 accident data). The survival time is computed with random censoring (Type III) from July in 2005 as a starting point. The results of the analysis show that Kaplan-Meier Analysis and Cox proportional hazards model are able to readily estimate survival and hazard function and to perform comparative study among group variables such as industry and technology rating level. In particular, Cox proportional hazards model is recognized that it is useful to understand which technology rating items are meaningful to company's survival and how much they affect it. It is considered that these results will provide valuable knowledge for practitioners to find and manage the significant items for survival of the guaranteed companies through future technology rating.
Train control system in LRT (Light Rail Transit) is developed as a part of "Light Rail Transit System Development Project". But there was no specific requirement representing the system safety. Because system safety must be ensured before the customization, we applied the system to a officially recognized specific procedure, such as "A Guideline to Ensure the Safety of Train Control System in Korea" that was officially announced by KNR (Korea National Railroad) in 2001. We should draw system safely requirement to guarantee system safety for the first time. In this paper, the hazard identification and analysis to derive the safety requirement on LRT train control system are carried out following the KNR guideline. To analyze hazard, we have to deduce system functions, identify related hazards, derive the effects of the hazards, analyze current risk, define the target risk of the system, and deduce the alternative plans to reduce the effects of the hazards. After the hazard analysis following the upper procedure, 30 hazards are identified and analysed. Especially detailed analysis on train collision that is a main hazard of the train control of system is specially carried out.

Scaffolds are frequently used in construction projects. Despite the impact on the entire safety, scaffolds are rarely analyzed as part of the safety planning. While recent advances in BIM (Building Information Modeling) provides opportunity to address potential safety issues in the early planning stages, it is still labor-intensive and challenging to incorporate scaffolds into current manual jobsite safety analysis which is time-consuming and error-prone. Consequently, potential safety hazards related to scaffolds are identified and presented during the construction phase. The objective of this research is to integrate scaffolds into automated safety analysis using BIM. A safety checking system was created to simulate the movements of scaffolds along the paths of crews using the scaffolds. Algorithms in the system automatically identify safety hazards related to activities working on scaffolds. Then, the system was implemented in a commercially available BIM software program for case studies. The results show that the algorithms successfully identified safety hazards that were not noticed by project managers of the projects. The results were visualized in BIM to facilitate early safety communications.
Hazard analysis provides the basic foundation for system safety. Hazard analysis is performed to identify hazards, hazard effects, and hazard causal factors. Hazard analysis is used to determine system risk, to determine the significance of hazards, and to establish design measures that will eliminate or mitigate the identified hazards. Hazard analysis is used to systematically examine systems, subsystems, facilities, components, software, personnel, and their interrelationships, with consideration given to logistics, training, maintenance, test, modification, and operational environments. This paper present hazard analysis techniques which is commonly used in railway signalling, comparised their benefits and limitations.
Railway signal system is responsible for the safety operation of railway and performs vital functions as safe space control, route control and etc. These functions prevent collision accidents between trains and derailment accidents of trains. However, these accidents are occurred by some causes. It is necessary to analysis hazards, hazard frequency and risk contribution. And railway signal system must make practical application of the analysis results. This paper includes analysis results of railway accident data by FTA(Fault Tree Analysis) and hazards. Railway signal system must consider these hazards. This paper used the railway accident data of RSSB(Railway Safety & Standard Board) of UK. We will use the FTA result to set up a draft of safety criteria of railway signal system.
