Assessment of occupational radiation exposure of NORM scales residues from oil and gas production

  • Radiological hazards from external exposure of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) scales residues, generated during the extraction process of oil and gas production in southern Algeria, are evaluated. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were measured using high-purity gamma-ray spectrometry (GeHP). Mean activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, found in scale samples are 4082 ± 41, 1060 ± 38 and 568 ± 36 Bq kg-1, respectively. Radiological hazard parameters, such as radium equivalent (Raeq), external and internal hazard indices (Hex, Hin), and gamma index (Iγ) are also evaluated. All hazard parameter values were greater than the permissible and recommended limits and the average annual effective dose value exceeded the dose constraint (0.3 mSv y-1). However, for occasionally exposed workers, the dose rate of 0.65 ± 0.02 mSv y-1 is lower than recommended limit of 1 mSv y-1 for public.

Estimation of Hazard Function and its Associated Factors in Gastric Cancer Patients using Wavelet and Kernel Smoothing Methods

  • Background and Objectives: Increase of mortality rates of gastric cancer in Iran and the world in recent years reveal necessity of studies on this disease. Here, hazard function for gastric cancer patients was estimated using Wavelet and Kernel methods and some related factors were assessed. Materials and Methods: Ninety-five gastric cancer patients in Fayazbakhsh Hospital between 1996 and 2003 were studied. The effects of age of patients, gender, stage of disease and treatment method on patient's lifetime were assessed. For data analyses, survival analyses using Wavelet method and Log-rank test in R software were used. Results: Nearly 25.3% of patients were female. Fourteen percent had surgery treatment and the rest had treatment without surgery. Three fourths died and the rest were censored. Almost 9.5% of patients were in early stages of the disease, 53.7% in locally advance stage and 36.8% in metastatic stage. Hazard function estimation with the wavelet method showed significant difference for stages of disease (P<0.001) and did not reveal any significant difference for age, gender and treatment method. Conclusion: Only stage of disease had effects on hazard and most patients were diagnosed in late stages of disease, which is possibly one of the most reasons for high hazard rate and low survival. Therefore, it seems to be necessary a public education about symptoms of disease by media and regular tests and screening for early diagnosis.

중소기업 청년인턴 취업자의 재직기간 분석 (Study on the determinants of employment duration in the youth-intern project)

  • 취업자들이 재직기간이 경과하면서 이직 또는 실업 상태로 탈출확률 및 탈출요인 문제를 분석하는 것은 취업의 질을 측정할 수 있는 하나의 방법이다. 일반적으로 취업자들의 이직 또는 실업으로의 탈출확률은 취업자의 개인특성뿐만 아니라, 직종 특성에도 영향을 받는 복수의 분석단위를 가지게 된다. 복수의 분석단위를 가지는 위계적 (hierarchical) 자료구조에서는 직종별로 공유되는 특성이 존재하게 되어, 동일 직종 집단 내의 상관이 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 취업자 개인특성 (1-수준)과 직종 특성 (2-수준)의 위계적 자료구조 하에서 콕스의 비례위험 모형 (Cox's proportional hazard model)을 이용하여 중소기업 청년인턴사업에 참여한 취업자들의 재직기간 중 실직 및 이직으로의 탈출요인을 분석하였다. 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 처리집단 (인턴집단)이 통제집단 (비인턴집단)에 비해서 탈출확률이 통계적으로 유의하게 낮음을 알 수 있다. 또한 남자들이 여자들에 비해서 탈출할 확률이 높고, 연령이 높을수록 탈출할 확률이 더 낮아지는 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 기업규모가 클수록 탈출확률이 낮으며, 직종별로는 관리사무 관련직에 비해서 전문 서비스 관련직의 탈출확률이 더 낮게 나타났다.

Tumor Size as a Prognostic Factor in Gastric Cancer Patient

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the prognostic significance of tumor size for 5-year survival rate in patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,697 patients with gastric cancer, who underwent potentially curative gastrectomy, were evaluated. Patients were divided into 4 groups as follows, according to the median size of early and advanced gastric cancer, respectively: small early gastric cancer (tumor size ${\leq}3$ cm), large early gastric cancer (tumor size >3 cm), small advanced gastric cancer (tumor size ${\leq}$ 6 cm), and large advanced gastric cancer (tumor size >6 cm). The prognostic value of tumor size for 5-year survival rate was investigated. Results: In a univariate analysis, tumor size is a significant prognostic factor in advanced gastric cancer, but not in early gastric cancer. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size is an independent prognostic factor for 5-year survival rate in advanced gastric cancer (P=0.003, hazard ratio=1.372, 95% confidence interval=1.115~1.690). When advanced gastric cancer is subdivided into 2 groups, according to serosa invasion: Group 1; serosa negative (T2 and T3, 7th AJCC), and Group 2; serosa positive (T4a and T4b, 7th AJCC), tumor size is an independent prognostic factor in Group 1 (P=0.011, hazard ratio=1.810, 95% confidence interval=1.149~2.852) and in Group 2 (P=0.033, hazard ratio=1.288, 95% confidence interval=1.020~1.627), respectively. Conclusions: Tumor size is an independent prognostic factor in advanced gastric cancer irrespective of the serosa invasion, but not in early gastric cancer.

Comparison between Parametric and Semi-parametric Cox Models in Modeling Transition Rates of a Multi-state Model: Application in Patients with Gastric Cancer Undergoing Surgery at the Iran Cancer Institute

  • Background: Research on cancers with a high rate of mortality such as those occurring in the stomach requires using models which can provide a closer examination of disease processes and provide researchers with more accurate data. Various models have been designed based on this issue and the present study aimed at evaluating such models. Materials and Methods: Data from 330 patients with gastric cancer undergoing surgery at Iran Cancer Institute from 1995 to 1999 were analyzed. Cox-Snell Residuals and Akaike Information Criterion were used to compare parametric and semi-parametric Cox models in modeling transition rates among different states of a multi-state model. R 2.15.1 software was used for all data analyses. Results: Analysis of Cox-Snell Residuals and Akaike Information Criterion for all probable transitions among different states revealed that parametric models represented a better fitness. Log-logistic, Gompertz and Log-normal models were good choices for modeling transition rate for relapse hazard (state $1{\rightarrow}state$ 2), death hazard without a relapse (state $1{\rightarrow}state$ 3) and death hazard with a relapse (state $2{\rightarrow}state$ 3), respectively. Conclusions: Although the semi-parametric Cox model is often used by most cancer researchers in modeling transition rates of multistate models, parametric models in similar situations- as they do not need proportional hazards assumption and consider a specific statistical distribution for time to occurrence of next state in case this assumption is not made - are more credible alternatives.

농촌지역 소규모 건축공사 현장의 재해조사를 통한 저감방안 고찰 (Measures to Reduce Industrial Accidents by Investigating them at Small Scale Construction Sites in Rural Area)

  • The number of industrial accident victims in the construction industry accounts for 1/3 of those in the entire industries and about 30% of the total compensation costs are spent in the construction industry. As such, the construction industry is a typical industry causing numerous safety accidents. This study analyzes the status of industrial accidents in small scale construction sites to build maximum five-story buildings by examining statistical data for the past five years, investigating those construction sites and conducting interviews with the workers. This study also seeks the causes of and measures for industrial accidents in the small scale construction industry through comparison with relevant systems. The findings are as follows: (1) To reduce hazard rate, shaping the working environment and safety measures that take into account the physically weak classes of the middle aged and the aging are urgently required, because 62.9% of the industrial accidents in the construction industry occurred to those who are 50 years of age or older. (2) The hazard rate at small scale construction sites with less than 10 construction workers accounts for 55% of that of the entire industries. The government, in this context, needs to support finance or technology and improve system by selecting the small scale construction sites, where industrial accidents occur frequently. (3) Because the hazard rate of unskilled workers with less than 6 months of work experience accounts for 90.95% of the total, safety education needs to be concentrated on those unskilled workers. (4) The relevant standards need to be segmented and revised and bolstered, given that 64.79% of death disaster in the construction industry occurs in the temporary structures including scaffolds and ladders.

Analysis of radioactivity levels and hazard assessment of black sand samples from Rashid area, Egypt

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the radioactivity levels and radiological impacts of representative black sand samples collected from different locations in the Rashid area, Egypt. These samples were prepared and then analyzed using the high-resolution gamma ray spectroscopy technique with a high-purity germanium detector. The activity concentration ($A_c$), minimum detectable activity, absorbed gamma dose rate, external hazard index ($H_{ex}$), annual effective dose rate equivalent, radium equivalent, as well as external and internal hazard index ($H_{ex}$ and $H_{in}$, respectively) were estimated based on the measured radionuclide concentration of the $^{238}U$($^{226}Ra$) and $^{232}Th$ decay chains and $^{40}K$. The activity concentrations of the $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$ decay series and $^{40}K$ of these samples varied from $45.11{\pm}3.1Bq/kg$ to $252.38{\pm}34.3Bq/kg$, from $64.65{\pm}6.1Bq/kg$ to $579.84{\pm}53.1Bq/kg$, and from $403.36{\pm}20.8Bq/kg$ to $527.47{\pm}23.1Bq/kg$, respectively. The activity concentration of $^{232}Th$ in Sample 1 has the highest value compared to the other samples; this value is also higher than the worldwide mean range as reported by UNSCEAR 2000. The total absorbed gamma dose rate and the annual effective dose for these samples were found to vary from 81.19 nGy/h to 497.81 nGy/h and from $99.86{\mu}Sv/y$ to $612.31{\mu}Sv/y$, which are higher than the world average values of 59 nGy/h and $70{\mu}Sv/y$, respectively. The $H_{ex}$ values were also calculated to be 3.02, 0.47, 0.63, 0.87, 0.87, 0.51 and 0.91. It was found that the calculated value of $H_{ex}$ for Sample 1 is significantly higher than the international acceptable limit of <1. The results are tabulated, depicted, and discussed within national and international frameworks, levels, and approaches.

알루미늄 나노 및 마이크로 입자의 열분해 위험성 (Pyrolysis Hazard for Nano and Micro-sized Aluminium Dusts)

  • 나노 및 마이크로 크기의 알루미늄(Al) 분진은 매우 높은 연소열을 가지고 있어서 로켓 추진체와 폭발물 등을 제조하는 원료로 많이 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 서로 다른 크기의 입자경 (70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$)을 가진 알루미늄 분진을 사용하여 열분해 위험성을 실험적으로 검토하였다. 이를 위해 열중량분석장치(TGA)를 사용하여 승온속도의 변화에 따른 열분해특성을 조사하고 입경이 다른 나노 및 마이크로 크기의 Al에서의 중량개시온도(Temperature of weight gain)로부터 발화온도를 추정하였다. 승온속도가 동일한 조건에서 Al분진의 중량개시온도는 입경이 증가할수록 또한 공기중 승온속도가 증가할수록 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다. 이러한 실험결과로부터 Al분진의 열분해 위험성은 분진 입자경의 증가와 함께 감소할 것으로 추정되었다.

청년층의 첫 일자리 진입 : 경제위기 전후의 비교 (Duration to First Job of Korean Young Graduates: Before and After the Economic Crisis)

  • 경제위기 직후 실업률의 급상승과 함께 경기변동에 민감한 청년층의 실업률은 15~20%까지 상승하였다. 경기회복에도 불구하고 신규학졸자의 첫 일자리 취업에는 상당한 애로가 존재하고 청년층의 유휴화율은 여전히 심각한 수준이다. 청년층 유휴화의 부정적 효과에도 불구하고 청년층의 학교교육-노동시장 이행과정에 관한 연구는 일천하다. 본 연구는 "한국노동패널" 3차년도(2000년)에 실시한 "청년층 부가조사" 자료를 이용하여 15~29세 청년층이 최종 학교를 마치고 첫 일자리를 취득하는 데 소요되는 미취업 경과기간을 분석한다. 미취업상태가 경과할수록 탈출확률이 낮아지는 부(-)의 경과 기간 의존성이 나타나며, 예상과는 달리, 여성의 탈출확률이 남성보다 높게 나타난다. 학력수준의 탈출확률에 대한 효과는 경제위기 이전에는 유의하지 않게 나타나나 경제위기 이후에는 뚜렷한 것으로 나타난다. 경제위기 이전 졸업자 표본은 높은 실업률이 탈출확률을 낮추는 반면 경제위기 이후 졸업자 표본은 정반대의 결과를 보여준다.

선형위험률분포의 절편모수에 근거한 무한고장 NHPP 소프트웨어 신뢰모형에 관한 연구 (The Study of Infinite NHPP Software Reliability Model from the Intercept Parameter using Linear Hazard Rate Distribution)

  • 소프트웨어 개발과정에서 소프트웨어 신뢰성은 매우 중요한 이슈이다. 소프트웨어 고장분석을 위한 무한고장 비동질적인 포아송과정에서 고장발생률이 상수이거나, 단조 증가 또는 단조 감소하는 패턴을 가질 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 수리시점에서도 고장이 발생할 상황을 반영하는 무한고장 NHPP모형들을 비교 제시하였다. 소프트웨어 경제, 경영, 보험수리분야에서 많이 사용되는 선형 위험률분포의 절편모수에 근거한 무한고장 소프트웨어 신뢰성모형에 대한 비교문제를 제시하였다. 그 결과 절편모수가 비교적 큰 경우가 효율적으로 나타났다. 그리고 모수 추정법은 최우추정법을 이용하였고 모형선택은 평균제곱오차와 결정계수를 이용하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 방법은 선형 위험률분포의 절편모수를 고려한 모형도 신뢰성 측면에서 효율적이기 때문에 (결정계수가 90% 이상) 이 분야에서 기존 모형의 하나의 대안으로 사용할 수 있음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통하여 소프트웨어 개발자들은 다양한 수명분포의 절편모수를 고려함으로서 소프트웨어 고장형태에 대한 사전지식을 파악하는데 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 사료 된다.
