  • This study focuses on demonstrating the effectiveness of vibration control of tuned rotary mass damper (TRMD) for reducing the bidirectional and torsional response of the irregular asymmetric structure with voided slabs under earthquake excitations. The TRMD arranged in plane of one-story eccentric structure is proposed as a distributed tuned rotary mass damper (DTRMD) system. Lagrange's equation is used to derive the equations of motion of the controlled system. The optimum position and number of TRMD are numerically investigated under harmonic excitation and the control effects of different distributions are discussed. Furthermore, a shaking table test is conducted under different excitation cases, including free vibration, forced vibration and seismic wave to investigate the absorption performance of the device. The numerical simulations of different distributions of the TRMDs show that the DTRMDs are more effective in reduction of the displacement response of the asymmetric structure under the same mass ratio, even when the degree of eccentricity becomes large. However, with small degree of eccentricity, the unreasonable asymmetrical arrangement may cause the increase of the peak value of the rotational angular displacement. Finally, the experimental investigations exhibit similar results of translational displacement of the structure. It is concluded that the vibration of the irregular asymmetric structure can be controlled more economically and effectively by reducing the mass ratio through reducing the quantity of TRMDs at the high stiffness end.

  • Three different tidal phase-lag references have been used by the tidal research community of Korea: Greek kappa (k), Local standard time zone ($135^{\circ}E$) phase-lag (g) and Greenwich phase-lag (G). This ununified tidal information system may induce confusion in understanding tidal characteristics and their variability and impede the development of tidal knowledge in Korea. In this study we closely explore the three phase-lag reference definition with respect to their mutual conversion. We also identify an incorrect phase-lag reference definition used in previous works and discuss what has led to this misunderstanding.

  • In order to analyze the dynamic motions of fish cage systems made of a frame and a netting under the conditions of waves and current, the hydraulic model experiment at towing tank and the numerical computation using boundary integral element method based on linear potential theory were carried out on a square and a circular type of fish cage, The computed and measured results for the dynamic motions of model fish cage systems showed that the heave and pitch motions were almost unaffected by the inclusion of nets, while the surge motions were very reduced by drag force acting on them. In addition, irregular wave-induced motions of fish cages included non-negligible 2nd order harmonic components at high frequency nearly twice the wave frequency. The reason why these motions were considered was due to resonance or structural components of frames being overflown and out of water during a wave cycle. It was found that circular type was more desirable structure in the open sea than square one only in the respect of dynamic motions due to waves and current. Further verifications were needed considering hydrodynamic forces, fatigue life, and structure analysis based on long term stochastic waves including frequency and time domain for the purpose of analyzing and designing fish cage systems.

  • The Earth's total magnetic field was calculated from on board TAM(Three-Axis Magnetometer) observations of KOMPSAT-1 satellite between June 19th and 21st, 2000. The TAM's telemetry data were transformed from ECI(Earth-Centered Inertial Frame) to ECEF(Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed Frame) and then to spherical coordination. Self-induced field from the satellite bus were removed by the symmetric nature of the magnetic field. The 2-D wavenumber correlation filtering and quadrant-swapping method were applied to eliminate the dynamic components and track-line noise. To test the validity of the TAM's geomagnetic field, ${\phi}$rsted satellite's magnetic model and IGRF2000 model were used for statistical comparison. The correlation coefficients between KOMPSAT-1/${\phi}$rsted and KOMPSAT-1/IGRF2000 models are 0.97 and 0.96, respectively. The global spherical harmonic coeffi-cient was then calculated from the KOMPSAT-1 data degree and order of up to 19 and compared with those from IGRF2000, $\phi$rsted, and CHAMP models. The KOMPSAT-1 model was found to be stable to degree & order of up to 5 and it can give new information for the low frequency components of the global geomagtic field.

  • According to increase of nonlinear power electronics equipment, active power filters have been researched and developed for many years to compensate harmonic disturbances and reactive power. However the commercial of active power filter is being proceeded slowly, because the cost of active power filter compared to the passive filter for harmonic and reactive power compensation is expensive. Especially, the use of DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chip, which is frequently used to control 3-phase active power filter, is a factor of increasing the cost of active power filters. On the other hand, the use of only analog controller makes the controller's circuits much more complicate and depreciates the flexibilities of controller. In this paper, a controller with low cost for 5[kVA] 3-phase active power filter system is designed. To reduce the expense of active filter system, the presented controller is composed of digital control part using Intel 80C196KC $\mu$P and analog control part using hysteresis controller for current control. Characteristic analysis of designed controller for active filter system is performed by computer simulation and compensating characteristics of the designed controller are verified by experiment.tegy can apply to the vector control, leading to better output torque capability in the ac motor drive system. This strategy is that in the overmodulation range, the d-axis output current is given a priority to regulate the flux well, instead the q-axis output curent is sacrificed. Therefore, the vector control even in the overmodulation PWM operation can be achieved well. For this purpose, the d-axis output voltage of a current controller to control the flux is conserved. the q-axis output voltage to control the torque is controlled to place the reference voltage vector on the hexagon boundary in case of the overmodulation. The validity of the proposed overall scheme is confirmed by simulation and experiments for a 22[kW] induction motor drive system.

  • Satellite images, which are widely used in various applications, are very useful for monitoring the surface of the earth. Since satellite data is obtained from a remote sensor, it contains a lot of noise and errors depending on observation weather conditions during data acquisition and sensor malfunction status. Since the accuracy of the data affects the accuracy and reliability of the data analysis results, noise removal and data restoration for high quality data is important. In this study, we propose a reconstruction system that models the time dependent dynamic characteristics of satellite data using a multi-period harmonic model and performs adaptive data restoration considering the spatial correlation of data. The proposed method is a real-time restoration method and thus can be employed as a preprocessing algorithm for real-time reconstruction of satellite data. The proposed method was evaluated with both simulated data and MODIS NDVI data for six years from 2011 to 2016. Experimental results show that the proposed method has the potentiality for reconstructing high quality satellite data.

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of wavelet OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and FD-OFDM(Frequency diversity OFDM) system with conventional OFDM system. Wavelet OFDM system uses wavelet transform rather than Fourier transform and contains intermediate characteristics of CDM (Code Division Multiplexing) and OFDM. In wavelet OFDM system, inter-symbol interference (ISI) can be suppressed effectively and adjacent channel interference can be also minimized well. In FD-OFDM system, each parallel branch symbol is multiplied by the orthogonal sequence and distributed into all sub-carriers. Then, each sub-carrier transmits information composed of the symbol components of all parallel branches in the given frame. FD-OFDM contains the frequency diversity characteristic and, therefore, FD-OFDM can be robust to the narrowband interference. For the comparison among different systems, BER (Bit-Error Rate) performances are evaluated in the presence of narrow-band interference and a harmonic noise channel. From the evaluation results, compared to the conventional OFDM, wavelet OFDM and FD-OFDM shows better robustness against the interference and, especially, wavelet OFDM is the most robust in harmonic noise channel.

  • The objective of this paper is to study arelationship between maximum response and its standard deviation of rotational shells that are subjected to uneven settlements. For this, the ratio, .eta, of the maximum response to standard deviation and it's approximate, .eta./sub apr/, are investigated by stochastic methods. Also, an equation for .eta./sub apr/, that is a function of predominant harmonic number is suggested. The settlements are represented by the Fourier series. Each term in the series contains two coefficients; the amplitude and the phase angle. It is assumed that phase angles are random variables and amplitudes are deterministic. To investigate the characteristics of .eta. and .eta./sub apr/, 100 phase angles for two types of artificial amplitudes spectra are used in the analysis. .eta. and .eta./sub apr/, are almost constant regardless of amplitude type, position of a shell or type of responses; they fall into from 2.0 to 2.5. .eta./sub apr/ is always close to .eta., but tends to be somewhat greater. It may be concluded that a maximum responses of rotational shells subjected to uneven settlements are .eta./sub apr/ (about 2.5) times of its standard deviation. It is considered that this result is used when we design rotational shell structures subjected to differential settlements.

  • In this study, we carried out the 3D numerical simulation to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of Synchronous Edge wave known as the driving mechanism of beach cusp using the Tool Box called the ihFoam that has its roots on the OpenFoam. As a wave driver, RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation) and mass conservation equation are used. In doing so, we materialized short-crested waves known as the prerequisite for the formation of Synchronous Edge waves by generating two obliquely colliding Cnoidal waves. Numerical results show that as can be expected, flow velocity along the cross section where waves are focused are simulated to be much faster than the one along the cross section where waves are diverged. It is also shown that along the cross section where waves are focused, up-rush is moving much faster than its associated back-wash, but a duration period of up-rush is shortened, which complies the typical characteristics of nonlinear waves. On the other hand, due to the water-merging effect triggered by the redirected flow toward wave-diverging area at the pinacle of run-up, along the cross section where waves are diverged, offshore-ward velocity is larger than shore-ward velocity at the vicinity of shore-line, while at the very middle of shoaling process, the asymmetry of flow velocity leaned toward the shore is noticeably weakened. Considering that these flow characteristics can be found without exception in Synchronous Edge waves, the numerical simulation can be regarded to be successfully implemented. In doing so, new insight about how the boundary layer streaming occur are also developed.

  • Ultrasonic nonlinearity has been considered as a solution for the detection of microcracks or interfacial delamination in a layered structure. The distinguished phenomenon in nonlinear ultrasonics is the generation of higher-order harmonic waves during the propagation. Therefore, in order to quantify the nonlinearity, the conventional method measures a parameter defined as the amplitude ratio of a second-order harmonic component and a fundamental frequency component included in the propagated ultrasonic wave signal. However, its application In field inspection is not easy at the present stage because no standard methodology has yet been made to accurately estimate this parameter. Thus, the aim of this paper is to propose an advanced signal processing technique for the precise estimation of a nonlinear ultrasonic parameter, which is based on power spectral and bispectral analysis. The method of estimating power spectrum and bispectrum of the pulse-like ultrasonic wave signal used in the commercial SAM (scanning acoustic microscopy) equipment is especially considered in this study The usefulness of the proposed method Is confirmed by experiments for a Newton ring with a continuous air gap between two glasses and a real semiconductor sample with local delaminations. The results show that the nonlinear parameter obtained tv the proposed method had a good correlation with the delamination.
