  • The objective of this paper is to develop a nondestructive method for estimating the fracture toughness (K$\_$IC/) of CrMoV steels used as the rotor material of steam turbines in power plants. To achieve this objective, a number of CrMoV steel samples were heat-treated, and the fracture appearance transition temperature (FATT) was determined as a function of aging time. Nonlinear ultrasonics was employed as the theoretical basis to explain the harmonic generation in a damaged material, and the nonlinearity parameter of the second harmonic wave was the experimental measure used to be correlated to the fracture toughness of the rotor steel. The nondestructive procedure for estimating the 7c consists of two steps. First, the correlations between the nonlinearity parameter and the FATT are sought. The FATT values are then used to estimate K$\_$IC/, using the K$\_$IC/ versus excess temperature (i.e., T-FATT) correlation that is available in the literature for CrMoV rotor steel.

  • In this paper, we have studied minimization of the kerf-width and surface burning, which occurred after the conventional singulation process of the multi-layer BGA board with copper, polyethylene and epoxy glass fiber. The high thermal energy of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to cut the multi-layer board. The most considerable matter in the laser cutting of the multi-layer BGA boards is their different absorption coefficient to the laser beam and their different heat conductivity. The cut mechanism of a multi-layer BGA board using a 2$^{nd}$ harmonic Nd:YAG laser is the thermal vaporization by high temperature rise based on the Gaussian profile and copper melting point. In this experiment, we found that the sacrifice layer and Na blowing are effective in minimizing the surface burning by the reaction between oxygen in the air and the laser beam. In addition, N2 blowing reduces laser energy loss by debris and suppresses surface oxidation. Also, the beam incidence on the epoxy layer compared to polyimide was much more suitable to reduce damage to polyimide with copper wire for the multi layer BGA singulation. When the polyester double-sided tape is used as a sacrifice layer, surface carbonization becomes less. The SEM, non-contact 3D inspector and high-resolution microscope are used to measure cut line-width and surface morphology.

  • Resistive leakage current flowing ZnO blocks increases with its ages, which is an important indicator of arrester deterioration. However, a complicated circuitry is essential to measure the resistive leakage current included in the total leakage current, and the difficult handling of the measurement makes few applications to the fields. In this paper, we propose a resistive leakage current measurement device which is composed of a current detection circuit and an analysis program operated on a microprocessor. The device samples the input leakage current waveform digitally, and discriminate the zero-cross and the peak point of the waveform to analyze the current amplitude vs. phase. The capacitive leakage current is then eliminated from the total leakage current by using an algorithm to extract the resistive leakage current only. Also, the device can be operated automatically and manually to analyze the resistive leakage current even when the leakage current waveform is distorted due to various types of arrester deterioration. To estimate the performance of the device, we carried out a test on ZnO blocks and lightning arresters. From the results, it is confirmed that the device could analyze most parameters needed for the arrester diagnostics such as total leakage current. resistive leakage current, and the $3^rd$ harmonic leakage current.

  • Ultrasonic nonlinearity has been considered as a promising method to evaluate the micro damage of material; however, its magnitude is so small that its measurement is not easy. Thus, in this study, we investigate the effects of such experimental system dependent factors in the measurement of ultrasonic nonlinear parameter by using contact PZT transducer. Experimental results showed that the effect of system dependent nonlinearity is reduced when the contact pressure and transducer input voltage are sufficiently large. These results will be very useful to find out the proper experiment condition to measure rather accurate nonlinear parameter.

  • The method of measuring the nonlinear effect of ultrasonic waves is suggested as a new approach for the effective evaluation of material degradation. In sonic wave propagation, the existence of nonlinear effect can be demonstrated by the generation of higher order harmonic waves. So, at first, the mechanism of generating higher order harmonic components due to nonlinear effect was explained by using nonlinear elasticity. Next, we attempted to measure how much of the higher order harmonic component was generated in the degraded material. For this purpose, a measurement system mainly based on a high-powered nonlinear ultrasonic signal analysis system was constructed, and SS41 and SS45 specimen intentionally degraded by tensile load and fatigue load were tested. From the results, we confirmed that the measurement of nonlinear acoustic effect may be useful for the evaluation of material degradation.

  • Proposed electronic ballast circuit for harmonic reduction includes adding lossless snubber circuit to DC-DC converter. To get inverter for changing DC-AC, a lamp has been changed to equivalence resistance in the standard lamp voltage and current data, also inverter circuit has been interpreted by being changed to R, L, C equivalence circuit. Using converted equivalent circuit, the most suitable circuit constant which can satisfy the characteristics of fluorescent lamps has been decided on and finally designed. It could not only eliminate distortion waveform from pulsation frequency in inverter direct side current but also reduce considerably pulsation rate and switching loss by making input current of inverter discontinuous. The validity for the results of this study has been verified through the experiment to measure harmonic occurrence after applying a newly-manufactured product of electronic ballast to 40 W line tube style fluorescent lamps.

  • Because of falling-off in power quality by harmonics, obstacles like lowering of capability, noise, vibration of power facilities and so on are occurred. Also generation of harmonics is inevitable and the point at harmonics is seriously gathering strength because energy saving installation using semiconductor circuit as countermeasures to enhance energy efficiency will be broadly spread and the use of energy conversion equipment like motor speed control contrivance, energy keeping installation and so on will increase, in the future. In order to eliminate harmonics obstacle, precision measurement and analysis on voltage, current, power factor, the each ingredient of harmonic order, the percentage of total harmonic distortion, and so forth are needed. In this paper, we developed low-cost measurement system to measure and analyze power quality connected with harmonics and verified it's performance by measuring and analyzing power quality in the three-phase and four-wire system.

  • In General, the measured loads and load-time function suggested by Bachmann iota walking are used for vibration analysis of structures subjected to footstep loads. It is not easy to measure walking loads because they we influenced by various parameters. Therefore, it is needed to model the walking loads that can be applied to structure analysis. Parameter study is used for the walking loads having various walking frequency for vibration analysis of structures under walking loads. In this study, walking loads were measured directly by using a force plate within two load cells, and the parameters of the walking loads were analyzed. The measured walking loads are decomposed into harmonic loads by using the Fouler series. Functional relationship between the walking frequency and the Fourier coefficients can be derived from the coefficients of harmonic loads obtained by the decomposition process, and the walking loads were formulated. It is possible to apply the venerated walking loads easily or conveniently by the proposed equation to the analysis of a structure subjected to walking loads.

  • This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted and rigid cylinder with two-degrees-of-freedom with respect to varying ratio of in-line natural frequency to cross-flow natural frequency, $f^*$, at a fixed low mass ratio. Combined in-line and cross-flow motion was observed in a sub-critical Reynolds number range. Three-dimensional displacement meter and tension meter were used to measure dynamic responses of the model. To validate the results and the experiment system, x and y response amplitudes and ratio of oscillation frequency to cross-flow natural frequency were compared with other experimental results. It has been found that the higher harmonics, such as third and more vibration components, can occur on a certain part of steel catenary riser under a condition of dual resonance mode. In the present work, however, due to the limitation of a size of circulating water channel, the whole test of a whole configuration of the riser at an adequate scale for VIV phenomenon was not able to be conducted. Instead, we have modeled a rigid cylinder and assumed that the cylinder is a part of steel catenary riser where the higher harmonic motions could occur. Through the experiment, we have found that even though the cylinder was assumed to be rigid, the occurrence of the higher harmonic motions was observed in a small reduced velocity ($V_r$) range, where the influence of the in-line response is relatively large. The transition of the vortex shedding mode from one to another was examined by using time history of x and y directional displacement over all experimental cases. We also observed the influence of in-line restoring force power spectral density with $f^*$.

  • The vacuum cleaner motor runs at very high speed for suction power. Specially, motor power is provided by the impeller being rotated at very high speed. The centrifugal fan consists of the impeller, the diffuser, and the circular casing. Due to the high rotating speed of the impeller and small gap distance between the impeller and the diffuser, the level of noise in the centrifugal fan is at BPF(Blade Passage Frequency) and its harmonic frequencies. In order to calculate the sound pressure of centrifugal fan, unsteady flow data are needed. The cause of noise is obtained by dividing the fluid noise by exhaust flow of fan and vibration noise by rotational vibration of vacuum cleaner fan motor. Until now, an accelerometer has been used to measure vibration. However, it can not measure vibration in some parts of brush and commutator because of motor construction and 3-D vibrating mode. This study was conducted to perform accurate analysis of vibration and aerodynamic sound for fan motor in a vacuum cleaner using a laser vibration analyzer. A silent fan motor can be designed using the data measured in this study.
