The Effects of GMAW Parameters on Penetration, Hardness and Microstructure of AS3678-A350 High Strength Steel

  • This research aims to study the effects of various welding parameters in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process on welding penetration, microstructure and hardness of AS3578-A350 high strength steel with the thickness of 10 mm. The welding process parameters were a welding current of 100-200A, an arc voltage of 20-30V, a welding speed of 20-60 cm/min and a gas shielding type of Ar and $Ar+CO_2$. The summarized experimental results are as follows. An increase of the welding current and voltage affected to increase the penetration depth of the joint. However, when the welding speed was decreased, it increased the penetration depth of the joint. Using the Ar gas for shielding the weld area, produced the higher penetration depth and the less narrow weld bead than the joint that was shielded by the mix gas of $Ar+CO_2$. The variation of the welding process parameters affected to produce the various microstructures of weld metal and heat affected zone and also showed the various kind of hardness along the weld joint.

  • In this paper, research was the variation of microstructure and mechanical properties of clad(A4045/A3003) Al alloy sheet by gas tungsten arc welding. Tensile properties of the gas tungsten arc welding joint decreased because of the softened heat affected zone(HAZ). The hardness of HAZ was lower than that of base metal, because relieved the work hardening effect of the welding heat. Hardness distribution of the weld zone with the base metal appears similarly, but the hardness of HAZ decreased remarkably. The microstructure in the weld zone of A4045 clad layer was formed a coarse columner grains of Si-rich. In the case of large weld heat input, the Si of the A4045 were diffused and until A3003 weld zone they decreased the strength.

Effect of laser heat-treatment on microstructure and micro-hardness of HVOF-sprayed WC-CoCr coating

  • The microstructure and micro-hardness of high velocity oxygen fuel-sprayed (HVOF) WC-CoCr coatings are comparatively studied for both before and after laser heat-treatment (LT) of the coatings. The results indicate that compared to HVOF WC-CoCro coating, the laser treatment has eliminated the pores almost entirely providing a more homogeneous and densified microstructure. And the compact interface of the coating with substrate is achieved by laser treatment. The thickness of the coating has decreased from 300 ${\mu}m$ to 225 ${\mu}m$ As a result, the average porosity is five times higher in HVOF coating than in the coating by laser treatment. The laser treatment has produced a considerable increment in the hardness of the coating near surface whose average value increases from Hv0.2=1262.4 in the HVOF-sprayed coating to Hv0.2=1818.7 in the coatings treated with laser.

수원시 꽃뫼 유적 출토 철제유물의 미세조직 분석 (Microstructure investigation of iron artifacts excavated from Kkonmoe relic located in Suwon-si)

  • Kkonmoe relic located in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do Provinceis an example of the wide chronology from the Three Kingdoms Period to Joseon Dynasty. Examinations on a forged iron ax, a cast iron ax and an iron sickle excavated from this relic revealed the microstructure structure of the metal and the manufacturing technologies. Microstructure investigation was carried out with a metallurgical microscope and a Vickers hardness tester was used to measure the hardness of the micro structures. The test results show that the forged iron ax has a ferrite and pearlitestructure. It is made of low carbon steel and then carbonized to increase carbon content. After carbonization, the surface grains are reworked and the surface decarbonized. In case of the iron sickle, it is forged from low carbon steel, then carbonized and hardened, to increase overall strength. The sickle blade is carbonized and quenched after forging, resulting in afirm, solid blade. Heat treatment to remove brittleness is not applied to the cast ironartifact, which is manufactured by solidifing hypo-eutectic cast iron with a3-4% carbon content and white cast iron. All artifacts are produced from steel and subjected to a carbonization process. To increase hardness of the blade, additional heat treatment is applied.

압력용기용 A516 강의 미세조직에 미치는 탄소 당량과 냉각 속도의 영향 (Effect of Carbon Equivalent and Cooling Rate on Microstructure in A516 Steels for Pressure Vessel)

  • In this study, the effect of carbon equivalent and cooling rate on microstructure and hardness of A516 steels for pressure vessel is investigated. Six kinds of specimens are fabricated by varying carbon equivalent and cooling rate, and their microstructures and hardness levels are analyzed. Specimens with low carbon equivalent consist of ferrite and pearlite. As the cooling rate increases, the size of pearlite decreases slightly. The specimens with high carbon equivalent and rapid cooling rates of 10 and $20^{\circ}C/s$ consist of not only ferrite and pearlite but also bainite structure, such as granular bainite, acicular ferrite, and bainite ferrite. As the cooling rate increases, the volume fractions of bainite structure increase and the effective grain size decreases. The effective grain sizes of granular bainite, acicular ferrite, and bainitic ferrite are ~20, ~5, and ${\sim}10{{\mu}m$, respectively. In the specimens with bainite structure, the volume fractions of acicular ferrite and bainitic ferrite, with small effective grains, increase as cooling rate increases, and so the hardness increases significantly.

Ti-Al-Si-Cu-N 후막의 Cu 조성에 따른 기계적 특성과 미세구조 변화에 관한 연구 (Influence of Cu Composition on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-Cu-N thick films)

  • Quinary component of 3㎛ thick Ti-Al-Si-Cu-N films were deposited onto WC-Co and Si wafer substrates by using an arc ion plating(AIP) system. In this study, the influence of copper(Cu) contents on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the films were investigated. The hardness of the films with 3.1 at.% Cu addition exhibited the hardness value of above 42 GPa due to the microstructural change as well as the solid-solution hardening. The instrumental analyses revealed that the deposited film with Cu content of 3.1 at.% was a nano-composites with nano-sized crystallites (5-7 nm in dia.) and a thin layer of amorphous Si3N4 phase.

  • Commercial pure iron powder and iron powder of coated 0.45% phosphorus were mixed with graphite powder in dry mixer to control carbon content from 0 wt% to 0.8 wt%. Mixed powder was pressed in the mould under the pressure of 510 MPa. Compacts were sintered at 118$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 min. in cracked ammonia gaseous atmosphere. Some of these sintered specimens were quenched in oil, and tempered in Ar gas. All of these specimens were investigated for microstructure, density and hardness in relation to coated phosphorus and carbon content. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The microstructure of the sintered speciments revealed that the amount of pearlite was increased with increasing C content but decreased by P-addition. (2) The P-addition affected the microstructure of pores in which the pore shape became round and its mean size was decreased by P-addition. (3) After tempering of sintered specimens the structure of pearlite was changed from fine structure to coarse one in P added specimen. (4) Hardness was higher in P added specimens.

  • The effect of forging start temperature, forging ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of B7B4 steel ware investigated. Microstructure of centrifugal casted B7B4 steel consisted of martensite and ferrite phase. The volume fraction of ferrite increased with increase of forging start temperature and decreased with increase of forging ratio. Tensile strength and hardness decreased with higher of forging start temperature, while impact value and elongation increased with higher of forging start temperature. With increase of forging ratio, tensile strength rapidly increased up to the forging ratio of 30%, and then slowly increased, but elongation was decreased. Hardness and impact value rapidly increased with increase of forging ratio.

  • Quaternary Ti-Si-C-N coatings were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) and sputtering techniques using Ti and Si targets, in an $Ar/N_2/CH_4$ gaseous mixture. The crystallinity, bending status, and microstructure of the Ti-Si-C-N coatings were measured by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), The micro-hardness of Ti(C,N) and Ti-Si-N coatings were about 30 and 40 GPa, respectively. As the Si was incorporated into Ti(C,N) coatings, the Ti-Si-C-N coatings having Si content of $8.9\;at.\%$ showed the maximum hardness value of about 55 GPa. In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Si-C-N coatings were systematically investigated.

공기 압축기의 피스톤용 알루미늄 합금 소재 개발 (Development of Aluminium Alloy for Piston of Air Compressor)

  • It is important not only to reduce the casting defects of piston but also to improvement in the mechanical properties(hardness) of piston for the air compressor. The blow hole is typical casting defects in the conventional cast of aluminium alloy(AC8A-T6) piston. Because of the heat treatment method, mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy for piston was decided on the heat treatment method and cycle. Therefore, we tested on the development of mechanical properties and on the casting defects of piston for the air compressor in accordance with the heat treatment and casting condition. After the heat treatment and casting was carried out as several times, and was compared with the imported piston. As a result of several investigations; microstructure, hardness and casting defects of piston was changed under the influence of the heat treatment and casting method. When the cooling rate was controlled and the uni-cast method used, it bas the same mechanical properties and microstructure.
