This study applied laser surface melting process using CW(Continuous wave) Yb:YAG laser and cold-work die steel SM45C and investigated microstructure and hardness. Laser beam speed, power and beam interval are fixed at 70 mm/sec, 2.8 kW and $800{\mu}m$ respectively. Depth of Hardening layer(Melting zone) was a minimum of 0.8 mm and a maximum of 1.0 mm that exceeds the limit of minimum depth 0.5 mm applying trimming die. In all weld zone, macrostructure was dendrite structure. At the dendrite boundary, Mn, Al, S and O was segregated and MnS and Al oxide existed. However, this inclusion didn't observe in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). As a result of interpreting phase transformation of binary diagram, MnS crystallizes from liquid. Also, it estimated that Al oxide forms by reacting with oxygen in the atmosphere. The hardness of the melting zone was from 650 Hv to 660 Hv regardless of the location that higher 60 Hv than the hardness of the HAZ that had maximum 600 Hv. In comparison with the size of microstructure using electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD), the size of microstructure in the melting zone was smaller than HAZ. Because it estimated that cooling rate of laser surface melting process is faster than water quenching.
Hot press forming allows geometrically complicated parts to be formed from sheet and the rapid cooling hardens them to extremely high strength. The main purpose of this research is to characterize Al coated layer in Al coated boron steel during hot press forming. For the hot press hardening experiment, test specimens were heated up to $810{\sim}930^{\circ}C$ and held for 3, 6 and 9 minutes, respectively. And then, some specimens were press hardened and others were air-cooled without any pressing for the comparison purpose. Al coated layer shows four distinct micro-structural regions of interest; diffusion zone, Al-Fe zone(I) low-Al zone(LAZ) and Al-Fe zone(II). Band-like LAZ is clearly shown at temperature ranges of $810{\sim}870^{\circ}C$ and sparsely dispersed at temperature higher than 900oC. The micro-cracking behavior in the Al coated layer during forming were also analyzed by bending and deep drawing tests. The strain concentration in softer LAZ is found to be closely related with micro-cracking and exfoliation in coated layer during forming.

In order to evaluate the effect of permanent softening behavior on springback prediction, 2D-draw bending simulations were compared with experiments for friction stir welded DP590 steel sheets. To account fur the nonlinear hardening behavior, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law was utilized with and without considering the permanent softening behavior during reverse loading. Also, the non-quadratic orthotropic yield function, Yld2000-2d, was used to describe the anisotropic initial-yielding behavior of the base sheet while anisotropic properties of the weld zone were ignored for simplicity.
This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of the output power and traverse speed of laser beam on the microstructures, hardness and fatigue resistance of the ductile iron surface-hardened by $CO_2$ laser defocussed beam. Optical micrographs have shown that with increasing the output power and decreasing the traverse speed, the martensite was coarsened and some retained austenite were appeared in ductile iron. The microstructures of hardening zone were composed of bull's eye and some nodular graphite dissolved structures by the effect of self quenching. Fatigue fracture characteristics of ductile iron have appeared in the high stress and low stress ranges. The fracture initiated at nodular graphites in the surface hardened layer due to the stress concentration caused by a notch effect. The interior graphite nodules were broken away or popped out during crack propagation. Fatigue test has shown that values of fatigue strength considerably increased with increasing output power at a given traverse speed.
The degree of work hardening in the subsurface zones varied with the experimental conditions under the rolling contact fatigue wear test of high carbon Cr-Ti alloy steel was evaluated by the distribution of residual stresses. Surface residual stresses before the test did not affect the wear property. Surface residual stresses after the test decreased by the increase of contact stress and running. velocity. but the maximum compressive residual stress and its depth of saturation in the subsurface zone increased. The relationship between these experimental results and the distribution of the theoritical shear stress was also discussed.
To reveal localized plastic deformation zones in a tough pitch copper, the etching characteristics of a copper sample have been examined. The etching was carried out on a sample surface using an etchant consisting of 25 ml nitric acid solution and 75 ml water. To clarify the plastic deformation zone, the sample deformed plastically was heated to between $250^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ before the etching process. This is due to a change of the microstructure and crystal orientation in the plastic deformation zone producing recrystallized small grains. In this case, the plastically deformed zone is severely etched, whereas the undeformed zone is only slightly etched. Identification of the details of the deformation zone from the etching is further discussed.

Case hardening behavior of tool steel(SK5) was investigated after YAG laser irradiation. In the case of beam passes, martensite formed in the melt zone and in former pearlite regions of the austenization zone exhibited very high Vickers Hardness values. The molten depth and radius, micro structure, hardness were investigated as a function of defocusing distance, pulse width, and power density.

A fault gouge zone which is about 25cm thick crops out along a small valley in Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju city. It is divided into greenish brown gouge and bluish gray gouge by color. Under the microscope, the gouges have a lot of porphyroclasts composed of old gouge fragments, quartz, feldspar and iron minerals. Clay minerals are abundant in matrix, defining strikingly P foliation by preferred orientation. Microstructural differences between bluish pay gouge and greenish brown gouge are as follows: greenish brown gouge compared to bluish gray gouge is (1) rich in clay minerals, (2) small in size and number of porphyroclasts, and (3) plentiful in iron minerals which are mostly hematites, while chiefly pyrites in bluish gray gouge. Hematites are considered to be altered from pyrites in the early-formed greenish brown gouge under the influence of hydrothermal fluids accompanied during the formation of bluish gray gouge that also precipitated pyrites. It is believed that the fault core including bluish gray gouge zone and greenish brown gouge zone was formed by progressive cataclastic flow. In the first stage the fault core initiates from damage zone of early faulting. In the second stage damage zone actively transforms into breccia zone by repeated fracturing. The third stage includes greenish brown (old) gouge formation in the center of the fault core mainly by particle grinding. In the third stage further deformation leads to the formation of new (bluish gray) gouge zone while old gouge zone undergoes strain hardening. Consequently, the whole gouge zone in the core widens.

The material properties of laser welding zone such as strength coefficient, work-hardening exponent, and plastic anisotropic ratio are analytically obtained from those of base metals based on the tensile tests. . The finite element formulation is developed for predicting strain distributions and weld line movements in the forming processes of laser welded blank. The welding zone(WZ) is modelled with the several, narrow finite elements whose material characteristics are based on the experimental results and the analytical equations. In order to show an application of the developed weld element the stamping process of auto-body door inner panel is simulated. FEM predictions are compared and showed good agreements with experimental observations.
