Hurricanes and tornadoes are the most destructive natural disasters in some central and southern states. Thus, storm shelters, which can provide emergency protections for low-rise building residents, are becoming popular nowadays. Both FEMA and ICC have published a series of manuals on storm shelter design. However, the authors found that the materials for related products in the market are heavyweight and hard to deliver and install; renovations are necessary. The authors' previous studies found that lightweight and high-performance composite materials can withstand extreme wind pressure, but some building codes are designated in wind-borne debris areas. In these areas, wind debris can reach greater than 100 mph speed. In addition, the impact damage on the composite materials is an increasing safety issue in many engineering fields; some can cause catastrophic results. Therefore, studying composite structures subjected to wind debris impact is essential. The finite element models are set up using the software Abaqus 2.0 to conduct the simulations to observe the impact resistance behavior of the carbon fiber composite sandwich panels. The selected wood debris models meet the FEMA requirements. The outcome of this study is then employed in future lab tests and compared with other material models.
The elastic modulus and the structural evolution were examined with the film thickness in polymeric, hard, graphitic diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. The DLC films used in the present study were prepared by radio frequency plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (r.f.-PACVD) from $C_6H_6\;and\;CH_4$ gas. Elastic modulus of very thin DLC film was measured by free overhang method. This method has an advantage over the other methods. Because the substrate was removed by etching technique, the measured value is not affected by the mechanical property of the substrate. The structural evolution was investigated by the G-peak position of the Raman spectrum. The polymeric and graphitic films exhibited the decreased elastic modulus with decreasing film thickness. In polymeric films, the reason was that more polymeric film had been deposited in the initial stage of the film growth and in graphitic film more graphic films which had been deposited in the initial stage decreased the elastic modulus. The G-peak position of the Raman spectrum confirmed this result. On the other hand, the hard film showed the constant elastic modulus regardless to the film thickness. The structural change was not observed in this range of the film thickness.

In this study, the stress-strain relations of steels have been calculated as a function of microstructural morphologies of each phase by use of FEM program(i.e. ABAQUS). The mechanical behavior of low carbon steels is affected by the microstructural factors such as yield ratio, volume fraction, shape and distribution of each phase and so on. The effects of shape, volume fraction and yield ratio of each phase on the mechanical behavior were analyzed by using unit cell and whole specimen size models. Results obtained are summarized as follows. As the yield ratio of hard phase to that of soft phase and volume fraction of hard phase were increased, stress level of flow curves were increased. It was found that in whole specimen size model, as the particle size was decreased, higher stress level was shown. Lastly the relationship between microstructure and tensile properties was examined by using the steels with various microstructural morphologies.

Tribological behaviors of the hard film on soft substrate system were explored using the hard thin film of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated the soft polymer of polydimethysiloxane (PDMS). A DLC film with the Young's modulus of 100 GPa was coated on PDMS substrate with Young's modulus of 10 MPa using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The deposition time was varied from 10 sec to 10 min, resulting in nanoscale roughness of wrinkle patterns with the thickness of 20 nm to 510 nm, respectively, at a bias voltage of $400\;V_b$, working pressure 10 mTorr. Nanoscale wrinkle patterns with 20-100 nm in width and 10-30 nm height were formed on DLC coating due to the residual stress in compression and difference in Young's modulus. Nanoscale roughness effect on tribological behaviors was observed by performing a tribo-experiment using the ball-on-disk type tribometer with a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter at the sliding speed of 220 rpm, normal load of 1N and 25% humidity at ambient temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. Friction force were measured with respect to thickness change of coated DLC thin film on PDMS. It was found that with increases the thickness of DLC coating on PDMS, the coefficient of friction decreased by comparison to that of the uncoated PDMS. The wear tracks before and after tribo-test were analyzed using SEM and AFM.
A commercially used Zr-based amorphous alloy was recycled and the effects of introducing carbon during recycling on the glass forming ability and mechanical properties of the alloy were investigated. The initial carbon content used in this study was 229ppm. The carbon content was gradually increased as the number of recycling iterations was increased and after the $4^{th}$ recycling it rapidly increased. As return scrap was recycled, polygonal particles precipitated, and they were identified as ZrC. The amount of the precipitates also increased with recycling. Tg, Tx and ${\Delta}T$ of the base alloy were 615 K, 696 K and 81 Kr respectively and they changed to 634 K, 706 K and 72 K after the $10^{th}$ recycling. The decrease of the ${\Delta}T$ value indicates deterioration of the glass forming ability. Hardness was not changed during three iterations of recycling but after the $4^{th}$ recycling it significantly increased. This is ascribed to an increase of amount of the hard particles, namely ZrC.
It was the first time the MgO-C brick was developed for the lining materials in the hot spots in electric are furnace in 1972. MgO-C brick is high registant to thermal and structural spalling. Futhermore for the reason that carbon is hard to react with slag and MgO is high fireproof MgO-C brick shows a high corrosion registance to slag attack compared with conventional basic refractories. Owing to their excellent properties the use of MgO-C refractories are being developed widely in the field of shaped refractories and even in that of monolithic refractories. In this paper the oxidation of carbon the infiltration of slag into the brick texture and effects of additions were investigated. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The use of fused MgO-clinker and high purity carbon as raw materials increased the corosion registance and hot modulus of rupture of MgO-C brick. 2) As the oxidation reaction of the carbon proceeded the slag infiltrated into the brick texture. And then the slag components reacted with the MgO grains and formed low melting point compounds particulary CaO.MgO.$SiO_2$ and 3CaO.MgO.$2SiO_2$ that resulted in the wear of the brick. 3) It is recongnized the Al, Si, $B_3C$ effects on the oxidation registant properties of MgO-C brick by contribu-ting to the decrease of permeability according to the formation of $Al_4C_3$, SiC, $B_2O_3$ and the decrease of open pores relating to the formation of MgO.Al2O3, $SiO_2$, 3MgO.$B_2O_3$ at the decarbonized layer.

A study was conducted on the effects of carbon, tungsten, and vanadium on the wear properties and surface roughness of four High Speed Steel (HSS) rolls manufactured by the centrifugal casting method. Hot-rolling simulation tests were carried out using a high-temperature wear tester capable of controlling speed, load, and temperature. HSS rolls contained a large amount (up to 25 vol.%) of carbides such as MC, $M_{2}C$, $M_{7}C_{3}$, and $M_{6}C$ carbides formed in the tempered martensite matrix. The matrix consisted mainly of lath tempered martensite when the carbon content in the matrix was small, and contained a considerable amount of plate tempered martensite when the carbon content increased. The high-temperature wear test results indicated that the wear properties and surface roughness of the rolls improved when the amount of hard MC carbides formed inside solidification cells increased. The rolls distribution was also homogeneous. The best wear properties and surface roughness were obtained from a roll where a large amount of MC carbides was homogeneously distributed in the lath tempered martensite matrix. The proper contents of carbon equivalent, tungsten equivalent, and vanadium were 2.0~2.3%, 9~10%, and 5~6%, respectively.
Polyurethane foam (PUF) can be manufactured in soft, semi-rigid, and hard forms, so it is used in various fields industrially. Among them, rigid PUF has excellent mechanical properties and low thermal conductivity, and is used as a thermal insulation material for buildings and as a cold insulation material in the natural gas transportation field. In this field, there is a steady demand on higher mechanical strength and lower thermal conductivity. In this study, a rigid PUF was manufactured, and the microstructure and physical properties were studied according to the impeller type (propeller, dispersed turbine) of the agitator. Through FE-SEM and Micro-CT analysis, it was confirmed that the average pore size of the foam manufactured with the dispersed turbine was 21.5% smaller than that of the pore made by the propeller. The compressive strength was improved by 15.4%, and the thermal conductivity decreased by 3.1% in the foam with small pores. This result can be utilized for fabricating PUF composites.

The purpose of this paper was to synthesize a polymer organic hard mask that simplifies the manufacturing process, reduces process time significantly, and thereby lowers manufacturing costs. The results of measuring residual metals through vapor refining showed that 9-Naphthalen-1-ylcarbazole(9-NC) measured 101.75ppb in the 4th zone, 2-Naphthol (2-NA) measured 306.98ppb in the 5th zone, and 9-Fluorenone(9-F) measured between 129.05ppb across the 4th and 5th zones. After passing through a filtration system, the synthesized organic hard mask measured residual metals in the range of 9 to 7ppb. Additionally, the thermal analysis indicated a decrease of 2.78%, a molecular weight of 942, carbon content of 89.74%, and a yield of 72.4%. The etching rate was measured at an average of 18.22Å/s, and the coating thickness deviation was averaged at 1.19. For particle sizes below 0.2㎛ in the organic hard mask, no particles were observed. By varying the coating speed at 1,000, 1,500, and 1,800rpm and measuring the resulting coating thickness, the shrinkage rate ranged from 17.9% to 20.8%. The coating results demonstrated excellent adhesion to SiON, and it was evident that the organic hard mask was uniformly applied.
Seashore joining with land and sea, which is typical habitat for marine macroalgae, is classified two types of shore as soft- and hard-bottom shore according to topographical (geological) and ecological features. We compared two of Ulva pertusa Kjellman from two contrasting habitats, sandy (soft-bottom, Haenam) and rocky shore (hard-bottom, Hadong) in terms of chlorophyll-a fluorescence and its parameters, and various photosynthetic pigment and nutrient content in the tissue of those. Both of habitats were different in the light environment such as light attenuation coefficient and even in nutrient concentration of ambient seawater. Electron transport rate (ETR) of Ulva from sandy shore was higher than from rocky shore. The range of photosynthetic pigment content in the tissue of U. pertusa was significantly much more in from sandy shore, and also nitrogen and phosphorus content were significantly higher except for carbon content. However, there were no significant differences in the ratio of among photosynthetic pigments, and N:P ratio was similar between each other, even though significantly different. Our result implied on the reason of why most of green tides in the worldwide concentrated and frequently occurred at sites with sandy, muddy and silty bottoms, being classified as soft-bottom shore.
