  • The segmentation of characters is an important step in the automatic recognition of handwritten text. This paper proposes the segmenting method of off-line handwritten Hangul. The suggested approach is based on the structural characteristics of Hangul. The first step extracts the local features. connected component and strokes from the imput word. In the second step we identify the class of strokes. The third segmenting step specifies WRC(White Run Column) before consonant or horizontal vowel. If the segment is longer than threshold, the system estimates segmenting columns using the consonant-vowel information and column features, and then finds a cornered boundary along the strokes within the estimated segmenting columns.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for off line recognition of handwritten characters, especially effective for large-set characters such as Korean and Chinese characters. The algorithm is based on a minimum distance dlassification method which is simple and easy to implement but suffers from low recognition performance. Two strategies have been developed to improve its performance; one is multi-stage pre-classification and the other is candicate reordering. Effectiveness of the algorithm has been proven by and experimet with the samples of 574 classes in a handwritten Korean character catabase named PE02, where 86.0% of recognition accuracy and 15 characters per second of processing speed have been obtained.

  • This paper proposes an effective recognition system which recognizes the mixed document consisting of handwritten korean/alphanumeric texts and graphic images. In the preprocessing step, an input image is binarized by the proposed thresholding scheme, then graphic and character regions are separated by using connected components and chain codes. Separated Korean characters are merged based on partial recognition and their character types and sized. In the character recognition step, we use the branch and bound algorithm based on DP matching costs to recognize Korean characters. Also we recognize alphanumeric characters using several robust features. Finally we use a dictionary and information of a recognition step to correct wrong recognition results. Computer simulation with several test documents shows what the proposed algorithm recognized effectively handwritten mixed texts.

  • Handwriting verification is a technique of distinguishing the same person's handwriting specimen from imitations with any two or more texts using one's handwriting individuality. This paper suggests an effective verification method for the handwritten signature or text on the off-line environment using pattern recognition technology. The core processes of the method which has been researched in this paper are extraction of letter area, extraction of features employing structural characteristics of handwritten text, feature analysis employing DTW(Dynamic Time Warping) algorithm and PCA(Principal Component Analysis). The experimental results show a superior performance of the suggested method.

  • This paper presents a system of handwritten numerals recognition, which is based on Ant-miner algorithm (data mining based on Ant colony optimization). At the beginning, three distinct fractures (also called attributes) of each numeral are extracted. The attributes are Loop zones, End points, and Feature codes. After these data are extracted, the attributes are in the form of attribute = value (eg. End point10 = true). The extraction is started by dividing the numeral into 12 zones. The numbers 1-12 are referenced for each zone. The possible values of Loop zone attribute in each zone are "true" and "false". The meaning of "true" is that the zone contains the loop of the numeral. The Endpoint attribute being "true" means that this zone contains the end point of the numeral. There are 24 attributes now. The Feature code attribute tells us how many lines of a numeral are passed by the referenced line. There are 7 referenced lines used in this experiment. The total attributes are 31. All attributes are used for construction of the classification rules by the Ant-miner algorithm in order to classify 10 numerals. The Ant-miner algorithm is adapted with a little change in this experiment for a better recognition rate. The results showed the system can recognize all of the training set (a thousand items of data from 50 people). When the unseen data is tested from 10 people, the recognition rate is 98 %.

  • For segmentation of constrained and handwritten Hangul, a new method, which has been not introduced, was proposed and implemented to use virtual network search system in the space between characters. The proposed system was designed to be used in all cases in unconstrained handwritten Hangul by various writers and to make a number of curved segmentation path using a virtual network to the space between characters. The proposed system prevented Process from generating a path in a wrong position by changing search window upon target block within a search process. From the experimental results, the proposed virtual network search system showed segmentation accuracy of $91.4\%$ from 800 word set including touched and overlapped characters collected from various writers.

  • This paper presents recognition of unconstrained handwritten numeral strings using decision value generator, which is combined with both isolated digit identifier and recognizer designed with structural characteristics of digits. Numerical string recognition system is composed of three modules, which are pre-segmentation, segmentation and recognition. Pre-segmentation module classifies a numeral string into sub-images, which are isolated digit, touched digits or broken digit, using confidence value of decision value generator. Segmentation module segments touched digits using reliability value of decision value generator that will separate the leftmost digit from touched string of digits. Segmentation-based and segmentation-free methods have used for classification and segmentation, respectively. To evaluate proposed method, experiments have carried out with handwritten numeral strings of NIST SD19 and higher recognition performance than previous works has obtained with 96.7%.

  • This paper presents off-line handwritten numeral recognition method by using Eigen-Vectors. In this method, numeral features are extracted statistically by using Eigen-Vectors through KL transform and input numeral is recognized in the feature space by the nearest-neighbor classifier. In our feature extraction method, basis vectors which express best the property of each numeral type within the extensive database of sample numeral images are calculated, and the numeral features are obtained by using this basis vectors. Through the experiments with the unconstrained handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, we have achieved a recognition rate of 96.2%.

  • This paper studies on an on-line recognition of handwritten Hangeul characters using the fuzzy inference. To solve the ambiguity due to the variations of writing style by writes, these handwri-tten characters are recognized by means of the fuzzy inference on the production rule which is generated with every relative position information between strokes. In order to reduce the processing time, a subgroup which is previously classified with the number of strokes of reference characters is selected according to the number of strokes of input character, and the tolerance limit of distances between input character and reference characters of a subgroup is introduced to reduce the reference characters which is applied to the fuzzy inference. Experimental results for handwritten Hanguel charters 3990 by 10 writers show the recognition rate of $99.5{\%}$and the average processing time of 0.4sec/character.

  • This paper proposes a new handwritten numeral recognition method using numeral shape grasps and FSOM (Fuzzy Self-Organizing Map). The proposed algorithm is based on the idea that numeral input data with similar shapes are classified into the same class. Shapes of numeral data are created using lines of external-contact and the class of numeral data is determined by template matching of the shapes. Each class of numeral data has FSOM and feature extraction method, respectively. In this paper, we divide the numeral database into the 16 classes. The divided FSOM model allows not only an independent learning phase of SOM but also step-by-step learning. Experiments using Concordia University handwritten numeral database proved that the proposed algorithm is effective to improve recognition accuracy.
