  • RP(Rapid prototyping) technology is widely used to reduce the cost and cycle time of new prototypes in industries as new product development cycle time currently shortened and the voice of customers also become to be diversified. In this study, RP skill used in making jewelry products was adapted to develop the metallic inlaying base of traditional handicraft products as the significance of CAD/CAM technologies was increased. The RP technology showed that it helped the handicraftsman to cut the groove for inlaying metalic wire more easily, uniformly and diversely than conventional handicraft technique in making the groove with undercut shape. Therefore this study showed that RP technology applied for the metalic inlaying base achieved more elaborate, intricate and uniform patterns, not depending on craftsmanship, compared with conventional handicraft skill in terms of quality, cost and delivery.

  • This study will examine the relationship between women and art education between the 1910s and the 1930s, and how women broke down the feudalistic views on women by changing the perceptions of women and stepped into society through gendered art education. Women tried to restore dignity and realize freedom and equality between men and women through modern education. Nevertheless, women had to receive handicraft education for the cultivation of virtues as part of the Japanese colonial policy and returned to their traditional feminine role. However, this study aims to reveal how a small number of "new women" who studied in Japan took the lead in teaching handicrafts for the independence of women, and how they were officially recognized as in the arts and crafts community and was able to enter the exhibition space through records, interviews, and newspaper articles. In conclusion, this study hopes to provide an opportunity to examine the relationship between handicraft education and femininity, and to consider the role of art education and exhibition in the development of women into social beings.

  • This study examines the correlation between the characteristics of sustainable slow design, The outcome derived from the pro-environmental consciousness in fashion design, and the trends of modern fashion design. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, slow design for sustainability shows an environmental consciousness and stresses the ethical aspects of fashion design that take into account the wellbeing and sustainable development of human society. It also focuses on the continuos present in which the consistent pace of life endures, rather than pursuing speedy changes of fashion by titillating desire. Second, the five characteristics of slow design have been extracted from the analysis of the examples of fashion industry and other fashion-related areas. They are sustainability, recyclibility, handicraft, naturalness, and simplicity. Third, these characteristics of slow design have much to do with modern fashion genres. For instance, classical style fashions such as Chanel suit and Burberry coat have the same qualities of sustainability, while at the same time the Vintage fashion, which reinterprets the fashions from bygone eras in modern style, has the tendency of recyclibility, and the Hippie style, a resurrection of hand-touch spirit that emerged as a secondhand style expressionism resisting uniform mass production, has not only the quality of handicraft but also recyclibility.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of handicraft activities on hand promptness and grasp in the elderly. Subjects were comprised of 14 senior citizens between the ages of 70-85, with 7 subjects in the experiment group and 7 in the control group. Subjects in the experiment group practiced various handicrafts twice a day, while those in the control group did not participate in any special activity. The Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test was used to evaluate the results, while a dynamometer and pinch gauge were used to measure hand promptness and grasp. The 7 senior citizens in the experiment group were able to increase their hand promptness and grasping skills. Conclusively, handicrafts can help improve hand promptness and grasp in the elderly. Furthermore, the development and improvement of such skills can have a positive influence on the daily lives of senior citizens. Such skills are expected to improve the overall neuro-function in the elderly population.
