Human like robot arm posture for grasping by considering the shape of the target object is quite a challenge in the field of robotics. In this paper, an optimized grasp posture with respect to the shape of the object considering the wrist joint angle and elbow elevation angle, in order to verify that the grasp posture is human like has been proposed. Given a target object, the candidates for grasp are computed by the method described in this paper. For each candidate, the closed loop inverse kinematics has been solved for the corresponding hand position and orientation. From the obtained joint angles through inverse kinematics, the elbow elevation angle has been computed and compared with the elbow elevation angle obtained through human movement data by the characteristic equation. After considering all the candidates, the hand position and orientation with minimum wrist joint and difference in elbow elevation angles has been utilized as the optimized grasp posture. Simulation results are presented.
The purpose of this study is to obtain 3-dimensional isocomfort workspace using the robot kinematics, which is based on perceived discomfort in varying postures for manipulating four types of controls. Fifteen healthy male subjects participated in the experiment where their perceived discomfort in the given postures was measured, in which L32 orthogonal array was adopted. The shoulder flexion and adduction-abduction, elbow flexion, types of controls, and right/left hands were selected as experimental variables. The results showed that the shoulder flexion and adduction-abduction, elbow flexion, and types of controls significantly affected the perceived discomfort at .alpha. =0.01. Depending upon the types of control used, regression equations predicting perceived dis- comfort and three dimensional isocomfort workspace were suggested based on the experiemntal cata. Using the equations, driver's isocomfort workspace in his/her cabin for pushing operation was illustrated, in which the robot kinematics was employed to describe the translational relationships between the upper arm and the lower arm/hand. It was ecpected that isocomfort workspace could be used as a valuable guideline to design workplaces ergonomically.
An algorithm is developed for solving the inverse kinematic problem of a 6-degree-of-freedom robot with a wrist offset for which the closed form inverse solutions are not obtainable, but knowledge of one joint variable allows closed form solutions of the remaining joint variables. The algorithm does not require Forward Kinematics nor Jacobian but uses the implicit kinematic relationships between joint variables and the given hand position. An iterative back substitution method is used to solve the inversion and the optimal conditions of the convergence are incoporated. An example is given to illustrate the concepts, the solution procedure and its convergency.
The market of digital avatar with internet and digital technology is increasing rapidly. The users want to express any free-formed motion of their avatars in the cyber space. The user s motion capturing method as the avatar's motion can express any free-formed motion of the avatar in real-time but the methods are expensive and inconvenient. In this paper, we proposed a new method of expressing any free-formed motion of the avatar in real-time. The proposed method is an algorithm for real-time control of a 3D avatar in symmetry-formed free motion. Specially, the algorithm aims at the motion control of a 3D avatar for online dancing games. The proposed algorithm uses the skeleton character model and controls any one of two hands of the character model by a joystick with two sticks. In the symmetry-formed motion, the position and orientation of one hand can determine the position and orientation of the other hand. And the position and orientation of a hand as an end-effector can determine the pose of the arm by Inverse Kinematics. So the algorithm can control the symmetry-formed free motions of two arms by one joystick with two sticks. In the dance game, the algorithm controls the arm motion by the joystick and the other motion by the motion captured DB.
The manipulability analysis of the parallel-type rolling mill proposed in Hong et al. [1] is re-visited. The parallel rolling mill uses two Stewart platforms in opposite direction for the generation of 6 degree-of-freedom motions of each roll. The objective of this new parallel rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of rolls, and tension of the strip. New forward/inverse kinematics problems, in contrast with [1], are formulated. The forward kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the roll-gap and the pair-crossing angle of two work rolls for given lengths of twelve legs. On the other hand, the inverse kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the lengths of twelve legs when the roll-gap, the pair-crossing angle, and the position and orientation of one work roll are given. The method of manipulability analysis used in this paper follows the spirit of [1]. But, because the rolling force and moment exerted from both upper and lower rolls have been included in the manipulability analysis, more accurate results than the use of a single platform can be achieved. Two. kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace.
A haptic hand controller operated by the user's hand can receive information on position and orientation of the hand and display force and moment generated in the virtual environment to the hand. This paper presents a design method for KU-HHC, 6 DOF Korea University-haptic hand controller, which allows separation of workspace from linkage mechanism in consideration of the efficient user operation. First, the 3 DOF mechanism in which all the actuators are mounted on the fixed base is developed by combining a 5-bar linkage and gimbal mechanism. Then, the 6 DOF HHC is designed by connecting the two 3 DOF devices through a handle. This paper presents the forward and inverse kinematics for this device and Jacobian analysis. Improvement of the kinematic characteristics using performance index is also discussed. The hand controller KU-HHC based on this design concept and kinematic analysis was manufactured and shows excellent performance.
We present a census of AGN-driven gas outflows based on the kinematics of ionized gas and stars, using a large sample of ~11,000 emission line galaxies at z < 0.3, selected from SDSS. First, a broad correlation between gas and stellar velocity dispersions indicates that the bulge gravitational potential plays a main role in determining the ionized gas kinematics. However, the velocity dispersion of the [OIII] emission line is larger than stellar velocity dispersion by a factor of 1.3-1.4, suggesting that the non-gravitational (non-virial) component, i.e., outflows, is almost comparable to the gravitational component. Second, gas-to-stellar velocity dispersion ratio increases with both AGN luminosity and Eddington ratio, suggesting that non-gravitational kinematics are clearly linked to AGN accretion. The distribution in the [OIII] velocity - velocity dispersion diagram dramatically expands toward large values with increasing AGN luminosity, implying that the launching velocity of gas outflows increases with AGN luminosity. Third, the fraction of AGNs with a signature of the non-gravitational kinematics, steeply increases with AGN luminosity and Eddington ratio, while the majority of luminous AGNs presents the non-gravitational kinematics in the [OIII] profile. These results suggest that ionized gas outflows are prevalent among type 2 AGNs. On the other hand, we find no strong trend of the [OIII] kinematics with radio luminosity, once we remove the effect of the bulge gravitational potential, indicating that ionized gas outflows are not directly related to radio activity for the majority of type 2 AGNs. We will discuss the implication of these results for AGN feedback in the local universe.

Recently, dexterous mechanical hands have become of interest in the field of robotics. In this paper, a new symbolic C-Y notation is proposed for the kinematic modeling, and we solve the kinematics of a simplified model of POSTECH Hand 1, which is a 5 fingered, 20 degrees of freedom anthropomorphic hand. POSTECH Hand I is designed to have distinctive kinematic structure and the kinematic analysis of the hand is carried out using C-Y notation. To prove the feasibility of C-Y notation, D-H notation is also applied to the POSTECH Hand 1. In the inverse kinematic analysis, we neglect the fingertip geometry and assume the point contact with 3 degrees of freedom constraints. The configurations which optimize manipulability index[2] was obtained based on the simulation experiments on the SUN-4 graphic workstation using SUNPhigs graphic software.
A force-reflecting hand controller can provide the kinesthetic information obtained from a slave manipulator to the operator of a teleoperation system. The goal is to construct a compact hand controller that can provide large workspace and good force-reflecting capability. This paper presents the design and the analysis of a 6-degree-of-freedom force-reflecting hand controller using fivebar parallel mechanism. The forward kinematics of the fivebar parallel mechanism has been calculated in real-time using three pin-joint sensors in addition to six actuator position sensors. A force decomposition approach is used to compute the Jacobian. To evaluate the characteristics of the fivebar parallel mechanism, it has been compared with the other three parallel mechanisms in terms with workspace and manipulability measure. The hand controller using the fivebar parallel mechanism has been constructed and tested to verify the feasibility of the design concept.
