In this paper, we proposed a tangible RealBook based on the interface of TouchFace-V which is able to recognize multi-touch and hand gesture. The TouchFace-V is applied projection technology on a flat surface such as table, without constraint of space. The system's configuration is addressed installation, calibration, and portability issues that are most existing front-projected vision-based tabletop display. It can provide hand touch and gesture applying computer vision by adopting tracking technology without sensor and traditional input device. The RealBook deals with the combination of each advantage of analog sensibility on texts and multimedia effects of e-book. Also, it provides digitally created stories that would differ in experiences and environments with interacting users' choices on the interface of the book. We proposed e-book that is new concept of electronic book; named RealBook, different from existing and TouchFace-V interface, which can provide more direct viewing, natural and intuitive interactions with hand touch and gesture.

Recently, there has been active studies on hand gesture recognition to increase immersion and provide user-friendly interaction in a virtual reality environment. However, most studies require specialized sensors or equipment, or show low recognition rates. This paper proposes a hand gesture recognition method using Deep Learning technology without separate sensors or equipment other than camera to recognize static and dynamic hand gestures. First, a series of hand gesture input images are converted into high-frequency images, then each of the hand gestures RGB images and their high-frequency images is learned through the DenseNet three-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network. Experimental results on 6 static hand gestures and 9 dynamic hand gestures showed an average of 92.6% recognition rate and increased 4.6% compared to previous DenseNet. The 3D defense game was implemented to verify the results of our study, and an average speed of 30 ms of gesture recognition was found to be available as a real-time user interface for virtual reality applications.

Recently immersive virtual reality (VR) becomes popular due to the advanced development of I/O interfaces and related SWs for effectively constructing VR environments. In particular, natural and intuitive manipulation of 3D virtual objects is still considered as one of the most important user interaction issues. This paper presents a comparative study on the manipulation and interaction of 3D virtual objects using different interfaces and interactions in three VR environments. The comparative study includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Three different experimental setups are 1) typical desktop-based VR using mouse and keyboard, 2) hand gesture-supported desktop VR using a Leap Motion sensor, and 3) immersive VR by wearing an HMD with hand gesture interaction using a Leap Motion sensor. In the desktop VR with hand gestures, the Leap Motion sensor is put on the desk. On the other hand, in the immersive VR, the sensor is mounted on the HMD so that the user can manipulate virtual objects in the front of the HMD. For the quantitative analysis, a task completion time and success rate were measured. Experimental tasks require complex 3D transformation such as simultaneous 3D translation and 3D rotation. For the qualitative analysis, various factors relating to user experience such as ease of use, natural interaction, and stressfulness were evaluated. The qualitative and quantitative analyses show that the immersive VR with the natural hand gesture provides more intuitive and natural interactions, supports fast and effective performance on task completion, but causes stressful condition.

This paper proposes a robot control human interface using Markov model (HMM) based hand signal recognizer. The command receiving humanoid robot sends webcam images to a client computer. The client computer then extracts the intended commanding hum n's hand motion descriptors. Upon the feature acquisition, the hand signal recognizer carries out the recognition procedure. The recognition result is then sent back to the robot for responsive actions. The system performance is evaluated by measuring the recognition of '48 hand signal set' which is created randomly using fundamental hand motion set. For isolated motion recognition, '48 hand signal set' shows 97.07% recognition rate while the 'baseline hand signal set' shows 92.4%. This result validates the proposed hand signal recognizer is indeed highly discernable. For the '48 hand signal set' connected motions, it shows 97.37% recognition rate. The relevant experiments demonstrate that the proposed system is promising for real world human-robot interface application.
Recent days, touch interaction interface is the most widely used interaction interface to communicate with digital devices. Because of its usability, touch technology is applied almost everywhere from watch to advertising boards and it is growing much bigger. However, this technology has a critical weakness. Normally, touch input device needs a contact surface with touch sensors embedded in it. Thus, touch interaction through general objects like books or documents are still unavailable. In this paper, a human-object interaction framework based on RGB-D camera is proposed to overcome those limitation. The proposed framework can deal with occluded situations like hovering the hand on top of the object and also moving objects by hand. In such situations object recognition algorithm and hand gesture algorithm may fail to recognize. However, our framework makes it possible to handle complicated circumstances without performance loss. The framework calculates the status of the object with fast and robust object recognition algorithm to determine whether it is an object or a human hand. Then, the hand gesture recognition algorithm controls the context of each object by gestures almost simultaneously.
This research aims to suggest a multimodal non-touch gesture interface design to improve the usability of 3D sculpting task. The task and procedure of design sculpting of users were analyzed across multiple circumstances from the physical sculpting to computer software. The optimal body posture, design process, work environment, gesture-task relationship, the combination of natural hand gesture and arm movement of designers were defined. The preliminary non-touch 3D S/W were also observed and natural gesture interaction, visual metaphor of UI and affordance for behavior guide were also designed. The prototype of gesture based 3D sculpting system were developed for validation of intuitiveness and learnability in comparison to the current S/W. The suggested gestures were proved with higher performance as a result in terms of understandability, memorability and error rate. Result of the research showed that the gesture interface design for productivity system should reflect the natural experience of users in previous work domain and provide appropriate visual - behavioral metaphor.

Recently, researches for user interface are remarkably processed due to the explosive growth of 3-dimensional contents and applications, and the spread class of computer user. This paper proposes a novel method to manipulate windows efficiently using only the intuitive motion of hand. Previous methods have some drawbacks such as burden of expensive device, high complexity of gesture recognition, assistance of additional information using marker, and so on. To improve the defects, we propose a novel visual touchless interface. First, we detect hand region using hue channel in HSV color space to control window using hand. The distance transform method is applied to detect centroid of hand and curvature of hand contour is used to determine position of fingertips. Finally, by using the hand motion information, we recognize hand gesture as one of predefined seven motions. Recognized hand gesture is to be a command to control window. In the proposed method, user can manipulate windows with sense of depth in the real environment because the method adopts stereo camera. Intuitive manipulation is also available because the proposed method supports visual touch for the virtual object, which user want to manipulate, only using simple motions of hand. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is verified via an application based on our proposed interface.
We propose a novel HMI UI/UX for an in-vehicle infotainment system. Our proposed HMI UI comprises multimodal interfaces that allow a driver to safely and intuitively manipulate an infotainment system while driving. Our analysis of a touchscreen interface-based HMI UI/UX reveals that a driver's use of such an interface while driving can cause the driver to be seriously distracted. Our proposed HMI UI/UX is a novel manipulation mechanism for a vehicle infotainment service. It consists of several interfaces that incorporate a variety of modalities, such as speech recognition, a manipulating device, and hand gesture recognition. In addition, we provide an HMI UI framework designed to be manipulated using a simple method based on four directions and one selection motion. Extensive quantitative and qualitative in-vehicle experiments demonstrate that the proposed HMI UI/UX is an efficient mechanism through which to manipulate an infotainment system while driving.
Objective: The aim of this study is to propose the contactless gesture-based interface on smart mobile devices for especially rhythm action games. Background: Most existing approaches about interactions of smart mobile games are tab on the touch screen. However that way is such undesirable for someone or for sometimes, because of the disabled person, or the inconvenience that users need to touch/tab specific devices. Moreover more importantly, new interaction can derive new possibilities from stranded game genre. Method: In this paper, I present a smart mobile game with contactless gesture-based interaction and the interfaces using computer vision technology. Discovering the gestures which are easy to recognize and research of interaction system that fits to game on smart mobile device are conducted as previous studies. A combination between augmented reality technique and contactless gesture interaction is also tried. Results: The rhythm game allows a user to interact with smart mobile devices using hand gestures, without touching or tabbing the screen. Moreover users can feel fun in the game as other games. Conclusion: Evaluation results show that users make low failure numbers, and the game is able to recognize gestures with quite high precision in real time. Therefore the contactless gesture-based interaction has potentials to smart mobile game. Application: The results are applied to the commercial game application.

Recently, many human-friendly communication methods have been studied for human-machine interface(HMI) without using any physical devices. One of them is the vision-based gesture recognition that this paper deals with. In this paper, we define some gestures for interaction with objects in a predefined virtual world, and propose an efficient method to recognize them. For preprocessing, we detect and track the both hands, and extract their silhouettes from the low-resolution hand images captured by a webcam. We modeled skin color by two Gaussian distributions in RGB color space and use blob-matching method to detect and track the hands. Applying the foodfill algorithm we extracted hand silhouettes and recognize the hand shapes of Thumb-Up, Palm and Cross by detecting and analyzing their modes. Then, with analyzing the context of hand movement, we recognized five predefined one-hand or both-hand gestures. Assuming that one main user shows up for accurate hand detection, the proposed gesture recognition method has been proved its efficiency and accuracy in many real-time demos.
