  • Position and rate control modes arc the two common modes for controlling remote manipulators with joysticks or hand controllers. Generally, position mode is easier for teleoperation than rate modes, when the manipulation work space is small or comparable to the human operator's control space. When the telemanipulator's work space is very large, human operator's control motion range must be large to allow telemanipulator's full range of motion resulting poor control resolution. One way to solve the poor resolution problem is to use indexing. However, rate mode can provide any higher degree of resolution without use of indexing. If two modes are mixed, master controller will be more convenient. The mixed mode algorithm, changes operating mode from position mode to rate mode or vise versa using fuzzy logic. The fuzzy logic algorithm, which has been designed to recognize the teleoperator's intended motion properly, provides an intelligence to a master controller.

  • This study aims at developing the high speed/intelligent machining system suing the plug/play method of an open architecture controller. The plug/play technology by the Application Specific Function (ASF), can readily implement the open architecture controller into various machining system or other automatic equipments. For the open architecture controller, this study developed the open HMI, screen editor, ASF, visual builder, and controller OS technology as software components. On the other hand, we developed the I/O module and main board as control hardware system. This study, as an example, presents integration of individual component technologies for the plug/play type open architecture CNC system.

  • In this paper, we develop control hardware such as an FPGA based general purposed intelligent controller with a DSP board to solve nonlinear system control problems. PID control algorithms are implemented in an FPGA and neural network control algorithms are implemented in a BSP board. An FPGA was programmed with VHDL to achieve high performance and flexibility. The additional hardware such as an encoder counter and a PWM generator can be implemented in a single FPGA device. As a result, the noise and power dissipation problems can be minimized and the cost effectiveness can be achieved. To show the performance of the developed controller, it was tested fur nonlinear systems such as a robot hand and an inverted pendulum.

  • In this paper, an effective control scheme of a single phase UPS inverter is proposed to have no steady state error of the output voltage and the fast response for the load request. The cosine wave tranfer function is proposed to control the output voltage. This controller clearly removes errors of magnitude and phase both in the steady state. On the other hand, a current controller is proposed to reduce the transient time of the voltage control and to improve the bad distorted factor of the output voltage waveform by the load fluctuation and the presences of nonlinear parameters in the plant. The current controller is designed parallel to the voltage controller and performs separately from it.

  • Neural networks and fuzzy systems have attracted the attention of many researehers recently. In general, neural networks are used to obtain information about systems from input/output observation and learning procedure. On the other hand, fuzzy systems use fuzzy rules to identify or control systems. In this paper we present a generalized FCMAC(Fuzzified Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) networks, by integrating fuzzy systems with the CMAC(Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) networks. We propose a direct adaptive controller design based on FCMAC(fuzzified CMAC) networks. Simulation results reveal that the proposed adaptive controller is practically feasible in nonlinear plant control.

  • Recent controller design techniques often discretize the target system and implement a discrete controller that is digitized to match the target system. When constructing such a discrete system, it is necessary to first determine the sampling time. The smaller the sampling time is, the more advantageous it can be made similar to the original system, but the cost is a problem when realizing such a configuration as hardware. On the other hand, the longer the time, the more different the system is from the original system, and eventually the control becomes impossible. In this paper, we consider the above problem and propose a more logical approach to determine the sampling time in the discrete system and investigate the relation with the differential controller. We also apply this process to a nonlinear system called ARAGO disc and verify its validity through computer simulation.

  • The paper is focusing on investigating the control characteristics of the baseline controller of 5 MW wind turbine provided by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). The baseline controller consist of two control logics, a maximum power tracking control below the rated wind speed and a constant power control above the rated wind speed. In the low wind speed, the mean generator power for changing the turbulent intensity and the optimal constant is studied through numerical simulations using FAST program. On the other hand, the constant power control logic and the constant control logic are compared in the high wind speed. It is confirmed that optimal constant is closely related to the turbulent intensity in low wind speed region and the constant torque control has better performance than the constant power control with respect to mechanical load in high wind speed region.

  • It is difficult to realize precise control by a fuzzy control scheme alone because control signals are derived from fuzzy inferences. On the other hand, pole-placement control can offer a precise control to a known system. In this paper, a VSC(variable structure control)scheme is proposed, which is an attempt to take merits of pole-placement control and fuzzy control. On the vicinity of the reference point the pole-placement control scheme takes over the role of the fuzzy controller to improve the set point response.

  • In this paper, a novel type of a visual servoing method is proposed for eye-in-hand robots by employing a self-organizing fuzzy controller. For this is there defined a new Jacobian riot to be the function of a relative position of the object but to be a function of the only image features. Instead of obtaining an analytic form of the proposed Jacobian, a self-organizing fuzzy controller is then proposed to alleviate difficulties in real-time implementation. To show the validities, the proposed method is applied to a 2-dimensional visual servoing task.

  • In this paper, the BTR (Behind the Tape Reader) type communication unit which interfaces the IEBM PC/XT to the FANUC 5M NC controller is developed, making it possible to send NC part program from the memory of IBM PC/XT to the NC controller. As an example of integration of CAD and CAM technologies, the machining of a two dimensional hand-written free line which incorporates the processes of geometric data acquisition using a digitizing tablet, automatic part programming and control of NC milling machine operation is demonstrated.
