The general photometric, spectroscopic, and kinematic properties of the late type halo stars are investigated from a sample of known true halo stars. Halo stars are distributed in a lower left region of infrared (J-H) vs (H-K) color-color diagram, which is recomfirmed to be useful for selection of halo stars. They move with average velocity components of 9 km/sec, -14 km/sec, and 5 km/sec in U, V, and W directions respectively. They are distributed seperately from disk stars in a diagram of metallicity index, CaH1/TiO5 vs (R-I).
From the kinematically unbiased sample of halo stars, the local mass density of halo dwarfs is estimated as $6.0{\sim}6.3{\times}10^{-4}m_{\odot}/pc^3$ by adopting a color-magnitude relation and a mass-luminosity relation. The derived halo mass density is not much different from the results of previous studies, which were derived from the kinematically biased sample of halo stars. Therefore it is confirmed that the local mass density of halo stars is far less than that required by Ostriker-Peebles to stabilize the galactic disk against barlike instabilities.
The formation of the Milky Way stellar halo is thought to be the result of merging and accretion of building blocks such as dwarf galaxies and massive globular clusters. Recently, Deason et al. (2015) suggested that the Milky Way outer halo formed mostly from big building blocks, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies, based on the similar number ratio of blue straggler (BS) stars to blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. Here we demonstrate, however, that this result is seriously biased by not taking into detailed consideration on the formation mechanism of BHB stars from helium enhanced second-generation population. In particular, the high BS-to-BHB ratio observed in the outer halo fields is most likely due to a small number of BHB stars provided by GCs rather than to a large number of BS stars. This is supported by our dynamical evolution model of GCs which shows preferential removal of first generation stars in GCs. Moreover, there are sufficient number of outer halo GCs which show very high BS-to-BHB ratio. Therefore, the BS-to-BHB number ratio is not a good indicator to use in arguing that more massive dwarf galaxies are the main building blocks of the Milky Way outer halo. Several lines of evidence still suggest that GCs can contribute a signicant fraction of the outer halo stars.
The bright part of the halo luminosity function is derived from a sample of the 233 NLTT propermotion stars, which are selected by the 220 km/ see of cutoff velocity in transverse to rid the contamination by the disk stars and corrected for the stars omitted in the sample by the selection criterion. It is limited to the absolute magnitude range of $M_v=4-8$, but is based on the largest sample of halo stars up to now. This luminosity function provides a number density of $2.3{\cdot}10^{-5}pc^{-3}$ and a mass density of $2.3{\cdot}10^{-5}M_{o}pc^{-3}$ for 4 < $M_v$ < 8 in the solar neighborhood. These are not sufficient for disk stability. The kinematics of the sample stars are < U > = - 7 km/sec, < V > = - 228 km/sec, and < W > = -8 km/sec with (${\sigma_u},{\sigma_v},{\sigma_w}$) = (192, 84, 94) km/sec. The average metallicity of them is [Fe/H] = $- 1.7{\pm}0.8$. These are typical values for halo stars which are selected by the high cutoff velocity. We reanalyze the luminosity function for a sample of 57 LHS proper-motion stars. The newly derived luminosity function is consistent with the one derived from the NLTT halo stars, but gives a somewhat smaller number density for the absolute magnitude range covered by the LF from NLTT stars. The luminosity function based on the LHS stars seems to have a dip in the magnitude range corresponding to the Wielen Dip, but it also seems to have some fluctuations due to a small number of sample stars.
The UBVRIHKL magnitudes on Johnson system and space motions of M dwarf stars have been collected. This sample of M stars have been distinguished on a purely kinematical basis; the one with e<0.15, young disk population, with 0.150.3 halo population. On the color-color diagrams and the color excess-orbital eccentricity diagrams, there is no distinction between the old disk stars and the young disk stars. However (I-H) color could be used to distinguish halo stars from young and old disk stars and the color excesses, ${\Delta}(U-B),\;{\Delta}(B-V),\;{\Delta}(V-R),\;{\Delta}(H-K),\;{\Delta}(K-L),\;and\;{\Delta}(B-R)$ can be used as abundance indicators only for the halo stars. But these color excesses which are measures of blue excesses, are positive for the halo stars with smaller eccentricities and become negative for those with larger eccentricities.
We present chemical and kinematic properties of the Milky Way's halo system investigated by carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars identified from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We first map out fractions of CEMP-no stars (those having no over-abundances of neutron-capture elements) and CEMP-s stars (those with over-enhancements of the s-process elements) in the inner- and outer-halo populations, separated by their spatial distribution of carbonicity ([C/Fe]). Among CEMP stars, the CEMP-no and CEMP-s objects are classified by different levels of absolute carbon abundances, A(C). We investigate characteristics of rotation velocity and orbital eccentric for these subclasses for each halo population. Any distinct kinematic features identified between the two categories in each halo region provide important clues on the origin of the dichotomy of the Galactic halo.

The second generation of stars in the globular clusters (GCs) of the Milky Way (MW) exhibit unusually high N, Na, or Al, compared to typical Galactic halo stars at similar metallicities. The halo field stars enhanced with such elements are believed to have originated in disrupted GCs or escaped from existing GCs. We identify such stars in the metallicity range -3.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0 from a sample of ~36,800 giant stars observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey, and present their dynamical properties. The N-rich population (NRP) and N-normal population (NNP) among our giant sample do not exhibit similarities in either in their metallicity distribution function (MDF) or dynamical properties. We find that, even though the MDF of the NRP looks similar to that of the MW's GCs in the range of [Fe/H] < -1.0, our analysis of the dynamical properties does not indicate similarities between them in the same metallicity range, implying that the escaped members from existing GCs may account for a small fraction of our N-rich stars, or the orbits of the present GCs have been altered by the dynamical friction of the MW. We also find a significant increase in the fraction of N-rich stars in the halo field in the very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2.0) regime, comprising up to ~20% of the fraction of the N-rich stars below [Fe/H] = -2.5, hinting that partially or fully destroyed VMP GCs may have in some degree contributed to the Galactic halo. A more detailed dynamical analysis of the NRP reveals that our sample of N-rich stars do not share a single common origin. Although a substantial fraction of the N-rich stars seem to originate from the GCs formed in situ, more than 60% of them are not associated with those of typical Galactic populations, but probably have extragalactic origins associated with Gaia Sausage/Enceladus, Sequoia, and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies, as well as with presently unrecognized progenitors.
The evolution of the Galaxy is examined by the halo-disk model, using the time-dependent bimodal IMF and contraints such as cumulative metallicity distribution, differential metallicity distribution and PDMF of main sequence stars. The time scale of the Galactic halo formation is about 3Gyr during which the most of halo stars and metal abundance are formed and ${\sim}95%$ of the initial halo mass falls to the disk. The G-dwarf problem could be explained by the time-dependent bimodal IMF which is suppressed for low mass stars at the early phase (t < 1Gyr) of the disk evolution. However, the importance of this problem is much weakened by the Pagel's differential metallicity distribution which leads to less initial metal enrichment and many long-lived metal-poor stars with Z < $1/3Z_{\odot}$ The observational distribution of abundance ratios of C, N, O elements with respect to [Fe/H] could be reproduced by the halo-disk model, including the contribution of iron product by SNIs of intermediate mass stars. The initial enrichment of elements in the disk could be explained by the halo-disk model, resulting in the slight decrease and then the increase in the slopes of the [N/Fe]- and [C/Fe]-distributions with increasing [Fe/H] in the range of [Fe/H] < -1.
We present distinct chemical and kinematic properties associated with the inner and outer halos of the Milky Way, as identified by metal-poor stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In particular, using carbon-enhance metal-poor (CEMP) giants, we first map out the fractions of CEMP-no stars (without strongly enhanced neutron-capture elements) and CEMP-s stars (with a large enhancement of s-process elements) in the inner- and outer-halo populations, separated by their spatial distribution of carbonicity ([C/Fe]). The CEMP-no and CEMP-s objects are classified by their different levels of absolute carbon abundances, A(C). We investigate characteristics of rotational velocity and orbital eccentricity for these sub-classes within the halo populations. Distinct kinematic features and fractions between CEMP-no and CEMP-s stars identified in each halo region will provide important clues on the origin of the dichotomy of the Galactic halo.
We present spatial and chemical distributions of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars in the Milky Way's halo, as observed by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Although the BOSS was designed to obtain spectra of galaxies and quasars, it also observed numerous metal-poor main-sequence turnoff stars for the purpose of flux calibration. The stars observed in the BOSS are two magnitudes fainter (15.5 < g < 19.2) than those in the legacy SDSS, thus it is an extremely useful sample to probe the distant halo. Using effective temperatures, surface gravities, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] derived for these stars by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP), we investigate the spatial distribution of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe], the distribution of [C/Fe], and frequency of CEMP stars among these stars. These tools enable characterization of the origin of the halo and its initial mass function.
