Halloysite nanotube (HNT) has a nanotube structure with the chemical formula of Al2Si2O5(OH)4 · nH2O and is a natural sediment of aluminosilicate. A lot of research has been conducted to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy composites by generating interactions between HNTs and polymers through surface treatment of HNTs, such as exchange of amine group as a terminal functional group. However, most of the surface modification methods are performed under wet conditions, which require a relatively large amount of time, manpower and solvent. In order to save time and simplify complicated procedures, a dry coating machine was designed and used for amine group exchange. Comparing the XPS results, it was found that the results of NH2-HNT prepared using a dry coating machine and the substitution through the wet method were not significantly different, and it has been confirmed that the amount of solvent used and the time savings can be made.

Epoxy resins are widely used in various fields due to their high adhesion, mechanical strength, and solvent resistance. However, as the volume decreases during the hardening process and the cooling process after hardening, stress is generated and when an external force is applied, the brittle material exhibits destruction behavior. To complement this, research has been conducted using inorganic nanofillers such as halloysite nanotube(HNT). HNT has a nanotube structure with the chemical formula of Al2Si2O5(OH)4·nH2O and is a natural sediment of aluminosilicate. It has been used as additive to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy composites with exchange of amine group as a terminal functional group. In order to simplify complicated procedures of common wet method, a dry coating machine was designed and used for amine group exchange in previous research. In this study, they were applied as filler in epoxy composites, and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of composites were examined.
To understand the weathering processes of the soil by submicroscopic method is very important to realize the properties of the soils. In this study soil formation processes show every steps to the changes in chemical and mechanical properties and the submicroscopic characteristics of soil weathering on the profiles of forest soils derived from granite in southern part of Korea. Fecal pellets(SEM) are given a full detail of the positive activities of the forest soil animals; mainly invertebrates in the O horizon and the E horizon. External shapes of fecal pellets have been divided into five groups : spherical, ellipsoidal, cylindrical, platy and threadlike. But doughnutlike form of fecal pellets is observed in this study. The soluble and suspended materials in the soils move downwards by percolation from the A horizon to the B or the BC horizons, and result in the illuviation cutans(SEM) on the ped surface of the lower horizon and deposited stack of kaolinite. Illuviated cutans are deposited on the ped surface even in the depth of 312cm in the BC horizon as well as the Bt horizon and comprise of fine silt, coarse clay and fine clay. A lot of halloysites are observed on the cutan surface. Halloysite formation from feldspars has been well known but a lot of hallyosite formation are observed in this study. The formation were predicted by Jackson(1962), inferred by Wada and Kakuto(1983a, b) and proved evidently by Cho and Mermut(1992a, b). This also suggests that halloysites in the soils derived from granite are formed a lot from ferruginous chlorites. The release of Fe from the chlorite structure are significant pedogenic processes and newly formed Fe oxides imparted a red color to the soils. The iron oxides particles, which are ejected and recrystalized, aggregate thickly on the edge of the ferruginous chlorites, and this indicates the release of structural Fe from weathered chlorites. Hematites and goethites are frequent in the fine clay in this soils.
In this study, damaged composite laminates were repaired by a stepped patch repair method using halloysite nanotube(HNT) and milled carbon(MC) reinforced composite materials with different amount of the particles. And the mechanical and structural effects of the particles on the interface between the damaged and repair surfaces were analyzed. At this time, after exposing them to a harsh environment of high temperature and humidity for a long time, the recovery rate of the material properties relative to the material forming the damaged plate was compared. As a result, at $70^{\circ}C$ high temperature distilled water, the hygroscopicity of the HNT/GFRP composites was significantly different from that of the MC/GFRP composites. Especially, 0.5, 1 wt. % HNT was added, the moisture absorption rate was the lowest and this was the factor that contributed to the mechanical strength increase. On the other hand, MC showed a high hygroscopic resistance only with a small amount, and the strength was different according to the action direction of the load, and the addition amount was also different.
In this study the occurrence and mineralogical characteristics of clay minerals from the Munhyun-dong landslide area in Pusan city were examined by XRD, SEM, and chemical analyses. Several types of clay minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral, vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral, kaolinite and illite are found abundantly in the area. The occurrence of clay minerals suggest that they have been formed by weathering of andesite which is the bedrock of the area. It is believed that halloysite was formed in the early stage of weathering, and vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral and mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral were formed in the middle stage, and finally, kaolinite was formed. The clay minerals occurring in the central part of the landsliding area and within the slip surface are dominated by expandable minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite and vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral. These clay minerals expand by absorbing water and effectively decrease the shear resistance of the rock mass, and therefore, they could be an important factor for the landslide. The analyses of geology and mineralogical characteristics of the area suggest that the landslide was caused by combination of various factors including steep slope, heavy rainfall, abundant joints, alteration of the rocks, and occurrence of expandable clay minerals. The result of this study suggests that the investigation for the prevention of possible landslide must include the examination of clay mineralogy as well as the site geology.
Weathering of biotite shows a biotite-vermiculite-kaolinite sequence at the early stage, but presents biotite-kaolinite sequence without a significant intermediate phase (vermiculite) at the late stage from the weathering profile of the granitic gneiss. Secondary 1:1 phyllosilicates are kaolinite and halloysite which show different weathering textures originated by a different formation mechanism. Kaolinitization began from the edges of biotite and propagated toward the interior of grain along a multilayered front. $10 \AA$ layers of biotite are interleaving with $7\AA$ layers of kaolinite and c-axis of two phases is consistent. Kaolinite pseudomorph of biotite is isovolumetric, compared to the biotite boundary and includes many band-like porosities parallel to the cleavage. Platy kaolinite formed by 1:1 layer fur layer replacement of biotite. Halloysitization proceeded outward from the grain edges which were foliated as fine flakes and bent at the right angle for cleavage Halloysites were extensively fanning out and greatly increased the volume of grain. This indicated that halloysite tubes were formed by epitaxial overgrowth on the surface of biotite with import of Si and Al from the external solution by dissolution of plagioclase. These halloysites have abnormally high Fe content ( ~11%).

Upon direct/indirect exposure to flame or heat, composite structures may burn or thermally buckle. This issue becomes more important in the natural fiber-based composite structures with higher flammability and lower mechanical properties. The main goal of the present study was to obtain an optimal eco-friendly composite system with low flammability and high thermal buckling resistance. The studied composite consisted of polypropylene (PP) and short abaca fiber (AF) with eggshell powder (ESP) and halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) additives. An optimal base composite, consisting of 30 wt.% AF and 70 wt.% PP, abbreviated as OAP, was initially introduced based on burning rate (BR) and the Young's modulus determined by horizontal burning test (HBT) and tensile test, respectively. The effects of adding ESP to the base composite were then investigated with the same experimental tests. The results indicated that though the BR significantly decreased with the increase of ESP content up to 6 wt.%, it had a very destructive influence on the stiffness of the composite. To compensate for the damaging effect of ESP, small amount of HNT was used. The performance of OAP composite with 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT (OAPEH) was explored by conducting HBT, cone calorimeter test (CCT) and tensile test. The experimental results indicated a 9~23 % reduction in almost all flammability parameters such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE), total smoke released (TSR), total smoke production (TSP), and mass loss (ML) during combustion. Furthermore, the combination of 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT reduced the stiffness of OAP to an insignificant amount by maximum 3%. Moreover, the char residue analysis revealed the distinct differences in the formation of char between AF/PP and AF/PP/ESP/HNT composites. Afterward, dilatometry test was carried out to examine the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of OAP and OAPEH samples. The obtained results showed that the CTE of OAPEH composite was about 18% less than that of OAP. Finally, a theoretical model was used based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to predict the critical bucking temperatures of the OAP and OAPEH composite plates. It was shown that in the absence of mechanical load, the critical buckling temperatures of OAPEH composite plates were higher than those of OAP composites, such that the difference between the buckling temperatures increased with the increase of thickness. On the contrary, the positive effect of CTE reduction on the buckling temperature decreased by raising the axial compressive mechanical load on the composite plates which can be assigned to the reduction of stiffness after the incorporation of ESP. The results of present study generally stated that a suitable combination of AF, PP, ESP, and HNT can result in a relatively optimal and environmentally friendly composite with proper flame and thermal buckling resistance with no significant decline in the stiffness.
Am(rphous aluminosilicate zeolite A and hydroxysodalite were obtained by reaction of Hadong kaolin(halloysite) with IN sodium hydroxide solntion in the temperature range of 60 to 10$0^{\circ}C$ For determination of the mechanism of the reaction Various possible mechanisms were compared with the experimental results. It was observed that the reaction mechamism of zeolite A synthesis from Hadong kaolin was first order consecu-tive reaction as follows : halloysitelongrightarrowamorphous aluminosilicatelongrightarrowzeolite Alongrightarrowhydroxysodalite
Chitosan-HNT (halloysite nanotube) composite membranes were prepared by the addition of HNT 0, 3, 5, and 10 wt%. The structure of composite membranes were studied by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and SEM. Gas permeation experiment were performed under condition of $30^{\circ}C$ and $4kgf/cm^2$. Gas permeability and selectivity were investigated by increasing the amount of HNT contents in the chitosan. Chitosan-HNT composite membrane for $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ showed the maximum value at 3 wt% of HNT content and decreased thereafter. The selectivity of ($CO_2/CH_4$) was increased due to its affinity with the OH groups on the HNT, was shown in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 at 0~10 wt%.

This study deals with both effects of inorganic fillers to vulcanized rubbers such as NR, CR, EPDM, NBR & SBR and inorganic characteristics of domestic fillers in comparision with hard clay produced in the USA. The results were as follows. 1. Main ingredient of domestic clay "Ha-dong clay" was Halloysite, "No-ha Island" was Pyrophyllite with $\alpha$-Quartz, and both of "Hard clay" & "Hwa-soon clay" were proved to be Kaolinite by XRD, DT-TGA and chemical analysis by XRF. 2. Tensile strength value of SBR compounded with these fillers, was Hard clay $146kg\;f/cm^2$, Kaolinite $123kg\;f/cm^2$, Pyrophyllite $82kg\;f/cm^2$, Halloysite $80kg\;f/cm^2$, precipitated $CaCO_3\;27kg\;f/cm^2$, and ground $CaCO_3$ was $21kg\;f/cm^2$. These results showed the increase of seven times according to filler species. 3. The physical properties of non-crystalline rubbers, such as SBR, NBR & EPDM, compared with NR & CR, have been considerably changed according to crystalline phase, particle size, shape and surface structure of fillers. Especially, tensile strength value in case of SBR & EPDM, was differentiated about 1.5 times by the particle size of fillers. 4. In SBR, physical properties of rubber compounded with Kaolinite which was surface treated with fatty acid and silane, almost approach to the value of hard clay. 5. Delayed cure time of Kaolinite and decrease of rubber properties by $CaCO_3$ can be improved by blending kaolinite & $CaCO_3$ in the ratio of 2:1.
