  • In this work, we proposed a reflective antiferroelectric liquid crystal display (AFLCD) using a half-wave cell whose tilt angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. To check the validity of our design, we fabricated a reflective half-wave AFLC cell of which tilt angle is $24.9^{\circ}$, and measured viewing angle dependent reflectance and VIS reflection spectra. In the results, the half-wave AFLC cell in the reflective configuration exhibits high brightness, high contrast ratio of 20:1.

  • We report the circumferential alignment of human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) in an orthogonally micropatterned circular microfluidic channel to form an in vivo-like smooth muscle cell layer. To realize a biomimetic smooth muscle cell layer which is aligned perpendicular to the axis of blood vessel, we first fabricated a half-circular polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannel by soft lithography using a convex PDMS mold. The orthogonally micro wrinkle patterns were generated inside the half-circular microchannel by stretching-releasing operation under UV irradiation. Upon UV treatment with uniaxial 40 % stretch of a PDMS substrate and releasing process, the microwrinkle patterns perpendicular to the axial direction of the circular microchannel were generated, which could guide the circumferential alignment of HASMCs successfully during cultivation. The analysis of orientation angle, shape index, and contractile protein marker expression indicates that the cultured HASMCs revealed the in vivo-like cell phenotype. Finally, we produced circular microchannels by bonding two half-circular microchannels, and cultured the HASMCs circumferentially with high alignment and viability for 5 days. These results are the first demonstration for constructing an in vivo-like 3D smooth muscle cell layer in the circular microfluidic channel which can provide novel bioassay platforms for in-depth study of HASMC biology and vascular function.

  • Reappraisal measurements of apparent half survival time of red cell by $^{51}Cr$ method was made and effects of blood-letting over red cell survival were observed. The study was performed on 53 normal male subjects under three different experimental conditions. 1. Group 1 Mean $^{51}Cr$ red cell half survival by ACD wash method was 29.7 days. $T\frac{1}{2}$ of Ascorbic acid method was 29.0 days in group with 100 mg dose and 29.1 days in group with 50 mg dose respectively. There was no difference between these two methods in regards to red cell half survival. No difference were noted in amount of ascorbic acid administered. 2. Group 2 As daily amount of blood loss is increased the shortening of red cell half survival was noted. Rapid phase was seen when blood loss ranged 10 to 25 ml per day, while slow phase noted when more loss amounted 25 ml or more daily. Thus, it was clear that there was more than an exponential relation between $T\frac{1}{2}$ and the amount of blood loss. 3. Group 3 $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per whole blood was within normal range and $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per red cell mass showed shortening tendency when compared with the former in the group measured after blood loss (from 25 ml daily up to 100 ml daily in 10 days). In the group with rather constant blood loss of 100 ml daily for 10 consecutive days revealed the significant difference in two measurements (P<0.01). 4. $T\frac{1}{2}$ in non-steady state When red cell production is increased compared with red cell destruction, $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per red cell mass being shorter than that by cpm per whole blood. Shortening of $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per whole blood is more prominent. if red cell destrction is enhanced and exceeds production. 5. It is clear that when expressing red cell destruction rate, $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per whole blood is more adequate and production more consistent with cpm red cell mass. 6. $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured during blood-letting, when corrected by amount of blood loss, it remains normal. It is erroneous to use conventional equational when measuring $T\frac{1}{2}$ in non-steady. $T\frac{1}{2}$ measured by cpm per whole blood is considred more applicable in clinical evaluation.

  • We described a simple and efficient fabrication method for generating microfluidic channels with a circular-cross sectional geometry by exploiting the reflow phenomenon of a thick positive photoresist. Initial rectangular shaped positive photoresist micropatterns on a silicon wafer, which were fabricated by a conventional photolithography process, were converted into a half-circular shape by tuning the temperature to around $105^{\circ}C$. Through optimization of the reflow conditions, we could obtain a perfect circular micropattern of the positive photoresist, and control the diameter in a range from 100 to 400 ${\mu}m$. The resultant convex half-circular photoresist was used as a template for fabricating a concave polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) through a replica molding process, and a circular PDMS microchannel was produced by bonding two half-circular PDMS layers. A variety of channel dimensions and patterns can be easily prepared, including straight, S-curve, X-, Y-, and T-shapes to mimic an in vivo vascular network. To inform an endothelial cell layer, we cultured primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) inside circular PDMS microchannels, and demonstrated successful cell adhesion, proliferation, and alignment along the channel.

  • Tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR)-associated factor 2 (TRAF2) is known to act as a signal transducer that connects TNFR2 to its downstream effector functions such as proliferation of thymocytes, regulation of gene expression, and cell death. TRAF2 consists of largely two domains, the N-terminal half that contains a signal-emanating region and the C-terminal half that is responsible for binding to the intracellular region of TNFR2. In this study, we examined the possible roles of TRAF2 in granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) gene expression and cell death. A truncated mutant of TRAF2 ( 2-263) that contains only a C-terminal half was generated, and transiently transfected to the A549 cell, a human lung cancer cell line, and L929 cell, a murine TNF-sensitive cell line. GM-CSF mRNA was induced in untransfected A540 cells both in dose- and time-dependent manner upon the exposure of TNF. However, neither the full length TRAF2 nor the mutant altered GM-CSF mRNA production regardless of the presence or absence of TNF. Furthermore, neither TRAF2 versions significantly changed the cytotoxic effect of TNF on L929 cells. These data suggest that TRAF2 may not be involved in the signal transduction pathway for GM-CSF gene induction and cell death mediated by TNF.

  • This study addresses the evaluation of the durability of reinforced concrete marine structures subjected to fatigue loading. The laboratory investigation was carried out on full and half size reinforced concrete specimens with three different water cement ratios (0.3, 0.4, and 0.56), static and fatigue loading conditions, and epoxy-coated and regular black steel reinforcements. The marine tidal zone was simulated by alternate filling and draining of the tank (wet and dry cycled), and a galvanostatic corrosion technique to accelerate corrosion of reinforcement was used. Half-cell potentials and changes of crack width were measured periodically during the exposure and followed by ultimate strength testing. The significant findings include adverse effect of fatigue loading, existence of an explicit size effect, poor performance of epoxy coated steel, and negative effect of increasing water/cement ratio.

  • This study was performed for the purpose of obtaining the fundamental data to establish the criterion of concrete deterioration and presuming steel corrosion of concrete structures under the environment of seawater. Steel embedded concrete specimens were exposed in seawater for 1year. The soluble chloride content in concrete, corrosion potential and steel corrosion were considered. The results show that soluble chloride content in concrete was decreased with lower water-cement ratio and with mineral admixtures. Half-cell potential is reduced with steel corrosion. Corrosion area ratio is correlative with half-cell potential.

  • Corrosion of Reinforcement (rebar) is nondestructively estimated by the half-cell potential measurement. As is the case with other nondestructive testings (NDT), understanding of the underlying principles should be clarified in order to obtain meaningful results. Therefore, the measurement of potentials in concrete is analytically investigated. The effect of internal defects on the potentials measured is clarified numerically by the boundary element method (BEM). Thus, a simplified inversion by BEM is applied to convert the potentials on concrete surface to those on rebars, taking into account the concrete resistivity. Because the potentials measured on concrete surface are so sensitive to moisture content, concrete resistivity and surface condition, an inverse procedure to convert the potentials on concrete surface into those on rebars is developed on the basis of BEM. It is found that ASTM criterion is practically applicable to estimate corrosion from the potential values converted. In experiments, an applicability of the procedure is examined by accelerated corrosion tests of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. For practical use, the procedure is developed where results of IBEM are visualized by VRML (Virtual Reality modeling Language) in three-dimensional space.
