  • Inoculation of the carrier-based mixed bioinoculants af N-fixer (Azospirillum lipoferum strain Az204/Rhizobium strain BMBS P47) and phosphate-solubilizing bacterium (Bacillus megaterium var phosphaticum strain Pb 1) promoted growth and yield of pearl millet and blackgram under pot-culture conditions. The mixed inoculant of Az204 and Pb 1 enhanced germination, seedling vigor, plant height, and seed weight, and resulted in $6\%$ increase in grain yield of pearl millet. Likewise, the mixed inoculant of BMBS P47 and Pb1 increased growth, nodulation, and yield in blackgram. The rhizosphere soil enzyme activities, including nitrogenase, urease, and phosphatase, in both pearl millet and blackgram were significantly increased by the inoculation of the mixed inoculant, compared to that of the individual inoculants. The results clearly indicate the beneficial effect of co-culturing the N-fixer and P-solubilizer in inoculants production.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on growth and yield of taro in different degree of activated charcoal concentration. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Stem length was shown the longest in activated charcoal of 10-20%, but shorter in control. Also stem diameter was shown the thickest in activated charcoal of 10-20%, but thinner in control. Length of main root and thickness of main root were good in activated charcoal of 10-20%. Quality and yield of Bupleurum fatcatum was the highest in activated charcoal of 10-20%. Therefore, optimum consistency of activated charcoal was 10-20%.

  • The effects of various kind and amount of nitrogen fertilizers on the plant grorth. physiological , yield and extracts. ligustilide, butylidene phthalide contents of curdsdrug "Tou-ki" (AnTelica acutiloba Kitagawa) were investigated in 1989. Five plots variouskind of nitrogen fertilizers. Namely, no nitrogen, urea. ammonium nitrate, ammoniumchloride and control plot of ammonium sulfate. The other, by providing five plotsdifferent composed ratio of nitrogenous fertilizers. containing no nitrogen (No. o) .0.5-fold nitrogen (No s), control plot of 1.0-fold nitrogen(Nl.o). 1.5-fold nitrogen(Nl s)and 2.0-fold nitrogen Na. o), but nitogen was used the ammonium sulfate. The results showedthat the crude drug "Tou-ki" can ammonium chloride be produced in good yield, displayingboth good plant growth and remarkable physiologically-active conditions, and it can beproduced such that the extracts is maximized. Additionally, using methods of gaschromatography (GC) , it was established that ligustilide and butylidene phthalide, majorcomponents in the crude drug was recovered in a good yield from the fully grown plants. The other, the plant growth, the physiologically-active, the weight of whole plant, theyield of extracts and ligustilide, butylidene phthalide were seen to be best at the plotof 2.0-fold nitrogen and according to the increase or decrease of nitrogen decreasedgradually. Therefore. about 2 fold of standard quantity seems to be the most suitablequantity of nitrogen for "Tou-ki" cultivation .uot;Tou-ki" cultivation .ion .

  • Background: This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics, root yield and curcuminoid content of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), cultivated using mother seed rhizomes (MR) and finger seed rhizome (FR) of different sizes. MR are attached to the stem, and FR are connected to the MR, and are used as a general seed rhizome. Methods and Results: Seed rhizomes of different types and sizes were used: large, medium and small for FR, and large, half-sized, and small for MR. These were assigned to the experimental groups and cultivated under greenhouse conditions. The growth characteristics, root yield, and curcuminoid content did not show clear difference between MR and FR, but suggest that the larger seed rhizomes (above 30 g) could have higher root yields. On average, harvested mother rhizomes (HMR) contained more curcuminoid than harvested finger rhizomes (HFR), while the yield of HFR was higher than that of HMR. The higher weight of harvested roots correlated significantly with elevated curcuminoid content. Conclusions: The two seed rhizomes, MR and FR, did not differ in root yield and curcuminoid contents, but larger seed rhizomes may produce better root yields. This suggest that the optimum seed rhizome is larger FR, to produce higher yields and quality in turmeric root production.

  • Effect of growth light intensity (5% and 20%) and planting density (40, 56, 90/33㎡) on yield and red ginseng quality was investigated in a sandy loam field of ginseng plantation. High growth light intensity had no effect on yield and quality but decreased stem length, leaf area and chlorophyll content and increased specific leaf weight. The optimum planting density was 64/3.3㎡ for both yield and Heaven + Earth grade (HE grade) of red ginseng. HE-shape ginseng rate showed significant positive correlation (P=0.0l) with HE grade rate.

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of nitrogen(N) fertilization levels(0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha) in early spring on the growth, dry matter(DM) yield, seasonal distribution of production and nutritive value of grasses. Additional N after the first, second and third harvest were applied as 60, 60 and 30 kg/ha, equally in 1989. Grass growth and DM yield were significantly increased(p$NO_3$-N concentration was not affected by N level of early spring. It is suggested that, therefore, N application in early spring is essential, and 60 to 90 kg/ha of N application may be desirable in early spring.

  • The appearances of growth and yield according to the cultivation types were investigated in chalok 1. The days to harvest under double vinyl house, open mulching and open cultivation were 87.7, 95.8, and 101.8 days, respectively and significantly different in each cultivation types. The branched ears of open mulching, double vinyl house and open cultivation were started at 7,8, and 13 days after silking, respectively. The frequency of branched ear per total plants to double vinyl house, open cultivation and open mulching were 10%, 13%, and 19%, respectively. The ear weight of open mulching and open cultivation was superior to branched ear weight. The yields (kg/10a) of double vinyl house, open mulching and open cultivation were 755.7kg, 740.7kg, and 530.0kg, respectively. The yields(kg/10a) of double vinyl house and open mulching were significantly different to that of open cultivation and LSD(5%) was 133.42. Thus, early cultivations in double vinyl house were more beneficial than other cultivation types because of the highest yield and the lowest branched ear.

  • In this study, growth of pepper seedlings was tested by treating organic materials in a plastic green house in Ssangok-ri Dogok-myeon, Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam Province from February 3, 2010 to April 19, 2010. The raised seedlings were planted to the organic planting area with an interval of $70cm{\times}55cm$ on April 20 in Deogam-ri Gogeum-myeon Wando-gun and red peppers were harvested at 7 times from July 22 to September 29. Before planting, the plant length of the overgrowth of seedlings was reduced by 26.8% using plant powder treatment as compared to the control group. The red pepper yield was 27% higher than in the control group when 20g of bone ash powder and 20g of plant powder were mixed. The yield tended to increase in other treatments compared to the control group.
