  • This paper investigated the damage transition mechanism between the fiber-breaking mode and the fiber-avoiding crack mode when the fiber-length is reduced in the unidirectional discontinuous carbon fiber-reinforced-plastics (CFRP) composites. The critical fiber-length for the transition is a key parameter for the manufacturing of flexible and high-strength CFRP composites with thermoset resin, because below this limit, we cannot take full advantage of the superior strength properties of fibers. For this discussion, we presented a numerical model for the microscopic damage and fracture of unidirectional discontinuous fiber-reinforced plastics. The model addressed the microscopic damage generated in these composites; the matrix crack with continuum damage mechanics model and the fiber breakage with the Weibull model for fiber strengths. With this numerical model, the damage transition behavior was discussed when the fiber length was varied. The comparison revealed that the length of discontinuous fibers in composites influences the formation and growth of the cluster of fiber-end damage, which causes the damage mode transition. Since the composite strength is significantly reduced below the critical fiber-length for the transition to fiber-avoiding crack mode, we should understand the damage mode transition appropriately with the analysis on the cluster growth of fiber-end damage.

  • Welding is used not only for the shipbuilding, but also for the repairing of ships. While repairing of ships, it is inevitable to weld new materials with degraded materials. In this case, it is predicted that the strength of both the sections is not identical each other. In this study, the respective welded joints in terms of mechanical properties such as microstructure, mechanical strength and fatigue crack propagation, with the component obtained from the barge used for a long-term period, were analyzed. It was found that the material degradation had a significant effect on the welded joints. The fatigue crack propagation in welded sections showed a big difference. The rate of fatigue crack growth of degraded material for both heat affected zone and parent metal was faster than that of new material. By contrast, the result from identical materials showed that the rate of fatigue crack growth of the heat-affected zone was slower than that of parent metal.

  • Reinforcement corrosion is one of the major problems in the durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments. Deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion reduces the durability and the safety margin of concrete structures, causing excessive costs in managing these structures safely. This paper aims to investigate the effects of reinforcement corrosion on the load bearing capacity deterioration of the corroded reinforced concrete structures. A new analytical method is proposed to predict the crack growth of cover concrete and evaluate the residual strength of concrete structures with corroded reinforcement failing in bond. The structural performance indicators, such as concrete crack growth and flexural strength deterioration rate, are assumed to be a stochastic process for lifetime distribution modelling of structural performance deterioration over time during the life cycle. The Weibull life evolution model is employed for analysing lifetime reliability and estimating remaining useful life of the corroded concrete structures. The results for the worked example show that the proposed approach can provide a reliable method for lifetime performance assessment of the corroded reinforced concrete structures.

  • Demand for now nondestructive evaluation are growing to detect fatigue crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments especially when they are In non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in fatigue and tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time-frequency analysis methods. The main frequency range is different in the noise and the fatigue crack propagation. It could be classified that it were also generated by composite fracture mechanics of cleavage, dimple, inclusion separation etc.

  • It is very important to have exact informations on the properties and characteristics of the sintered steel as a new material of machine elements. The bending fatigue tests are performed for the sintered steel bend specimens of various densities 6.6 to 7.0 g/$cm^3$ and the sintered spur gear to consisted of Fe-Cu-C. The fatigue test at a constant stress amplitude is performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. Consequently, the S-N curves are obtained. The fatigue strength S for fatigue life N of the specimen with the initial length of crack ai is simulated, and they are shown as N-S-A curves. This study investigate the crack growth characteristics by experiments and present crack growth simulation method for sintered gear

  • The development of high-strength fibers such as boron/epoxy and carbon/epoxy and adhesives has made it possible to repair cracked metallic plates by bonding reinforcing patches to the plate over the crack. In this study, aluminum 6061-T6 alloy plates with the high strength are applied to specimens with a cracked bolt hole to study the effect of diverse patch materials on the fatigue behavior of this structure. Additionally, the observation of the effort of different patch sizes on the specimen was performed. The results shows that the patch repair can improve the static strength by about 17% and the fatigue life by 200% compared with non-repaired case. And it was also revealed that the patching method along to crack growth direction is mort efficient in cost and weight reduction.

  • The mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rate fracture toughness of permanent mould cast austempered gray cast iron(AGI) were compared to those of sand cast AGI. Specimens prepared for tensile, impact and fatigue test were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempered at $270^{\circ}C$, $320^{\circ}C$, $370^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The strength, impact and fatigue crack propagation behavior of permanent mold cast AGI were found to be superior to those of sand cast AGI. Maximum values in tensile strength, BHN, Charpy impact energy, were obtained at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. Samely, the slowest fatigue crack growth rate was appeared at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. But ductility of AGI was not improved by permanent mould casting.

  • High velocity oxygen-fuel thermal spray coating of the WC-Co cermet material is a well-established process for modifying the surface properties of the structural components exposed to the corrosive and wear attacks, and also these coating are well-known method to improve the fatigue strength of material. In this study, HVOF coated SM490B are prepared to evaluation of the effect of coating on tension and fatigue crack growth behavior. The pre-crack of the fatigue crack growth test specimens machined at deposited material area, heat affected zone and boundary, respectively. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) Tensile strength was about 498 MPa, and fracture occurred on base metal area. 2) The fatigue crack of coated specimens propagated more rapidly than non-coated specimen in all specimens. 3) In the same coating thickness specimens, the specimens with pre-crack at boundary more rapidly propagated than the specimens with pre-crack at HAZ and deposited material area. These results can be used as basic data in a structural integrity evaluation of rolled SM490B weldments considering HVOF coating.

  • Al2O3/Al composites were produced by displacement reaction method which was carried out by imm-ersing the sintered silica preform which was prepared form fused silica powder in molten aluminu. an ac-tivation energy of 94kJ/mole was calculated from Al-SiO2 reaction data in 1000-130$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range With increase of reaction temperature the alumina particle in the Al2O3/Al composites produced with pur metal Al showed grain growth and the growth of alumina particle in Al2O3/Al composite produced by using of Mg contained Al alloy was inhibited. The flexural strength of Al2O3/Al composites produced at 100$0^{\circ}C$ showed the highest value as 393 MPa. Flexural strength of the composite fabricated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ showed higher deviation than that of the composite produced at above 100$0^{\circ}C$ Low flexural strength of the composite fa-bricated at 120$0^{\circ}C$ due to the growth of pore and alumina particle size. The hardness of composites de-pended on alumina content in Al2O3/Al composite decreased with increasing of aluminium content in case the same alumina content and increased with increasing of silicon content in composite.
