  • Dermoid cyst is a benign neoplasm, so called by teratoma that is derived from both ectoderm and mesoderm during embryonic period. The majority of dermoid cysts are found in the ovaries and approximately only 7% of dermoid cysts are found in the head and neck. The growth of dermoid cysts in the floor of the mouth is considered a rare condition. We report one case of huge dermoid cyst in the floor of mouth suffered with double chin appearance and difficulty in pronunciation and respiration. The cyst was excised successfully only intra-oral incision. Clinical progress was uneventful and postoperative recovery excellent without recurrence.

  • Ethaboxam is a new fungicidal active ingredient that inhibits growth of plant pathogens specifically belonging to Oomycetes with protective, curative, systemic and translaminar activity in plants. Modes of action studies revealed that ethaboxam simultaneously inhibits cytoskeleton formation and mitochondrial respiration of Phytophthora infestans at low concentrations. There have been no indications of resistance development when tested for baseline resistance monitoring to 261 isolates of P. infestans in Korea and Europe and 150 populations of Plasmopara viticola populations in Europe for 3 years since 2000. In a selective study with vine trees artificially inoculated with P. viticola repeatedly for 10 generations in greenhouse, there have been no changes in sensitivity to ethaboxam among four natural populations of P. viticola. Furthermore, ethamoxam has not shown any cross resistance with azoxystrobin, mefenoxam, dimethomorph and cymoxanil. Based on the study results from modes of action and resistance development, ethaboxam appears to be unlikely to develop resistance in field applications.

  • The anaerobically expressed gene aeg-46.5, which had been identified by the operon fusion technique with a hybrid bacteriophage of ${\lambda}$ and Mu, ${\lambda}$placMu53, was studied for its expression pattern and growth. The expression of aeg-46.5 was studied in the wild-type cell and mutant cells that have mutation (s) in the control gene of anaerobic respiration (fnr) and nitrate response (narL and narP). The ${\beta}$-galactosidase reporter gene showed maximum expression in narL host after two hours of aerobic to anaerobic switch in M9-Glc-nitrate medium. Both 40 mM and 100 mM concentrations of nitrate ion in the medium had little effect on expression level. We propose that aeg-46.5 is subject to multiple regulations of anaerobic activation by Fnr, nitrate activation by NarP and repression mediated by NarL.

  • Chlorination of the polluted water may produce odoriferous and objectionable-tasting chlorophenols which are hazardous to health. These studies were undertaken to investigate the hazardous effects of chlorophenols to the rat. 1. The chlorophenols such as o-chlorophenol and 2,6-dichlorophenol inhibited rat growth and caused increment of the ratio between liver weight and body weight. 2. The hemoglobin content, hamatocrit ratio and A/G of rat blood were decreased by chlorophenols administration. The activities of alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) in serum as well as in liver were increased provisonally and decreased after one or two weeks adminstration. 3. The liver mitochondrial respiration ($QO_{2}$) was inhibited by chlorophenols treatment in in-vivo and in-vitro test. 4. The liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 was decreased by chlorophenols administration 5. Liver tissue was degenerated with congestion, atrophy, swelling, vacuolation, dilation of rough endoplasmic reticulum and denature of mitochondrial particle with swelling, and cristal destruction by chlorophenols adminstration. 6. After one and two weeks of adminstration of chlorophenols to rat, the aberrations of bone marrow chromosome and inhibition of its mitosis were observed respectively.

  • The study was carried out to examine effect of cadmium spraying on mulberry leaves on the growth and metabolism of mulberry tree. The results obtained were as follow:1. Brown spot were appeared on the leaves as the symptoms of damage and the damage was remarkable with higher concentration of cadmium.2. Higher concentration of Cd inhibited the length and diameter of mulberry branches with a significant difference (P<0.05) for the length. The growth of branch length in both 5 and 7 ppm treatment of Cd was inhibited by 31% compared with the control. 3. Cadimum concentration of mulberry barks was noticeably lower than that of leaves. 4. Cadimum concentration over 3ppm inhibited significantly chlorophyll content, activitsies of respiration, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transase (GPT) and adenocine triphosphate (APT). 5. The lowest concentration of cadmium was identified to be 3ppm to incur the inhibitory effect on the growth and metabolism of mulberry and cadmium content of mulberry leaves at the concentration was 13.86ppm.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of lead exposure on survival, growth and oxygen consumption of juvenile oliver flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus for 6 weeks. Survival rate of the oliver flounder was significantly affected above 150 $\mu{g/L}$. Growth rate of the olive flounder exposed to ≥ 150 $\mu{g/L}$ of lead concentration were significantly decreased than that exposed to normal condition. Metabolic rate in the lead concentration ≥ 80 $\mu{g/L}$ was significantly reduced with increasing lead concentration then that in normal condition. This study revealed that high lead concentration (≥ 80 $\mu{g/L}$) reduced growth and metabolic rate of the juvenile olive flounder suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of olive flounder in the coastal areas.

  • Mixotrophic microalgal growth gives a great premise for wastewater treatment based on photoautotrophic nutrient utilization and heterotrophic organic removal while producing renewable biomass. There remains a need for a control strategy to enrich them in a photobioreactor. This study performed a series of batch experiments using a mixotroph, Chlorella sorokiniana, to characterize optimal guidelines of mixotrophic growth based on a statistical design of the experiment. Using a central composite design, this study evaluated how temperature and light irradiance are associated with $CO_2$ capture and organic carbon respiration through biomass production and ammonia removal kinetics. By conducting regressions on the experimental data, response surfaces were created to suggest proper ranges of temperature and light irradiance that mixotrophs can beneficially use as two types of energy sources. The results identified that efficient mixotrophic metabolism of Chlorella sorokiniana for organics and inorganics occurs at the temperature of $30-40^{\circ}C$ and diurnal light condition of $150-200{\mu}mol\;E{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The optimal specific growth rate and ammonia removal rate were recorded as 0.51/d and 0.56/h on average, respectively, and the confirmation test verified that the organic removal rate was $105mg\;COD{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. These results support the development of a viable option for sustainable treatment and effluent quality management of problematic livestock wastewater.

  • Rates of photosynthesis and respiration of Laminaria japonica sporophytes cultivated on the southeastern coast of Korea were monthly measured in situ and under constant temperature and nitrogen concentration in laboratory from February to July 1996 in order to understand the seasonal photosynthetic performance of this alga. P-I (the relationship between photosynthsis and irradiance) parameters measured in situ varied seasonally. Photosynthetic capacity ($P_{max}$) reached its maximum in March (6.64 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$) and gradually decreased thereafter. Photosynthetic efficiency (${\alpha}$), which ranged from 0.026 to 0.106, generally showed a similar pattern with the $P_{max}$, curve. Correlation between respiration and $P_{max}$, was not significant (Spearman's rank correlation, p>0.05); respiration rate, which varied between 0.25 and 0.83 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, showed no gradual decline from March. $P_{max}$ in situ significantly correlated with the relative growth rate of frond weight (Spearman's rank correlation, p<0.01) and this result means that the amount of accumulated materials in body increased with the increment of $P_{max}$. Compared $P_{max}$, in situ with that in the laboratory. The lower $P_{max}$ in February was probably caused by the effect of lower seawater temperature at this time. The decrease in $P_{max}$ after March, however, was primarily attributable to the thickness of blade as the plants got old. Comparison of P-I parameters measured for different size groups in April, explained the negative relationship between $P_{max}$ and frond thickness.

  • To elucidate the physiological characteristics of 2 japonica type and 2 tongil type of rice cultivars, photosynthesis, respiration and diurnal changes of photosynthesis rate had been investigated 6 times at each growing stage. The ratios of photosynthetic part of tongil types were higher than those of japonica types at tillering stage. The highest photosynthetic activity was measured on August 1, before heading in each growing stage, and efficiency of photosynthesis showed its the highest on July 25. Diurnal photosynthetic curve at heading stage reached the peak at 11-12 AM, but after 2 weeks from heading stage, the peak apperred at 1-2 PM. Conversion of respiration into photosynthesis for $CO_2$ fixation started 30~60 minutes later than the standard sunrise time and reconversion for carborhdrate accmulation began 50~60 minutes earlier than the standard sunset time. Photosynthesis showed positive correlation with chlorophyll content and root activity. Harvest index of tongil type cultivars were significantly higher than those of japonica type cultivars.

  • Effects of light intensity and temperature on photosynthesis and respiration of autogenous wild SUMBODY plants, Dystaenia takesimana, known as a prospective source of forage in Ulleung island, Korea, were investigated. Results were as follows : 1. Light saturation point at $20^{\circ}C$ was 34 to 38 klux and light compensation point was 4 to 6 klux. Apparent photosynthetic rate at light saturation was 9 to 12 mg $CO_2/dm^2/hr$. 2. Optimum temperature for photosynthesis was $20^{\circ}C$ and $Q_{10}$ values of two temperature ranges, 20 to $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 to $40^{\circ}C$, were 0.8 and 0.9 for photosynthesis, while $Q_{10}$ for respiration were 1.6 and 1.7. 3. Native plants sampled in area of higher altitude had a higher apparent photosynthtic rate at lower temperature and the plants sampled in area of mixed with bushes had lower a light compensation point. These rusults suggest that the Inland weather condition of Korea during spring and fall seasons might be. suitable for the SUMBODY growth but inadequate during summer.
