We examine historical contributions of inter fuel substitution, changes in carbon efficiency and energy intensity, growth of economy and population to Korea's $CO_2$ emissions from 1970 to 1998 using the log mean weight Divisia index method. The study reveals that economic growth is the most significant factor to $CO_2$ emissions growth among the five factors. Changes in the fuel substitution and carbon coefficient are found negative contributors to $CO_2$ emissions growth. Energy intensity, which played dominant role in halting $CO_2$ emissions growth in the 1980s, began to play reversed role in the 1990s. When evaluated with the log mean Divisia index technique, deterioration of energy intensity in the 1990s is found worse and expected to contribute $CO_2$ emissions growth further.

The residential population of Jeju Island has increased more than 10% for last 10 years. Especially, the tourist population is more than twice comparing to 2005. The population growth of Jeju has brought about large-scale urban development and increased land demands for tourism services. The goal of this study is to analyze the human, social, and environmental status of Jeju Island and to evaluate the environmental capacity of land use using ecological footprint (EF) model. This study shows the changes in ecological deficits of Jeju Island through estimating ecological productive land (EPL) considering EF from 2005 to 2015. The categories of total EF consists of food land, built-up land, forestry, and energy consumption. In order to reflect the characteristics of resort island, we consider not only residential population but also tourist population who can increase land demands. The outputs of this study also provide the potential excess demands of EPL and suggest needs of sustainable management plans for the limited land of Jeju Island.
The seasonal pattern and the annual magnitude of the internal (or biochemical) and plant-soil cycles of phophorus in adjacent three different herb plant populations-Helianthus tuberosus L., Artemisia princeps Pampan and Phalaris anundinacea L.-in an old field of the basin in the Mt. Geumoh were investigated. A lot of the phosphorus demand for the three populations was supplied by the withdrawal from below-ground organ in early growing period, by the absorption from soil in mid-growing period and by the withdrawal from stem in later growing period. But in the A. princeps and P. arundianacea populations, a great deal of phosphorus seemed to be absorbed prior to the first withdrawal. The annual amount of the phosphorus flowing throughthe internal cycle was about 59% of the total hosphorus flow on theorgan level in the H. tuberosus population, 41% in the A. princeps population and 32% in the P. arundinacea population, indicating that the tuber plant had the most developed internal cycle system. The annual amount of phosphorus which took part in the plant-soil cycle in the stand of the three populations was in the range of 4.49-5.65 gPm-2, corresponding to only 3-8% of the extractable phosphorus contained in the soil of 0-20 cm depth. The fact that the H. tuberosus population is higher in the extent fo internal cycle but smaller in the magnitude of plant-soil cycle and lower in the turnover rate of phsophorus than the other two populations suggests that the growth of H. tuberosus population may be less dependent on soil phosphorus availability than those of the other two populations.

Understanding temporal variations in wildlife populations is a prerequisite for conservation planning of wide-ranging species such as tigers (Panthera tigris). We determined the temporal variation in abundance, population growth, and sex ratios at different age and sex stages for a tiger population in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, India from November 2007 to February 2011 using motion-sensing cameras. We identified 19 male and 21 female tigers from stripe patterns during 16,110 trap nights within an area covering 233 km2. The annual abundance of the population varied from 34.9 (mean)±3.8 (SE) to 23.9±1.5, with a declining trend in the mean annual change of abundance (-12%). The density of adult females remained stable across the study duration, but the densities of adult males and non-breeding tigers fluctuated. The sex ratio was female-biased (0.58 males/female) for breeding tigers and male-biased (1.74 males/female) for non-breeding tigers. Our results reinforce the importance of long-term studies for monitoring the naturally occurring processes in populations to develop population indicators and identify reliable baseline information for conservation and management planning of populations.

The Chinese Holstein cattle breed, an introduced breed in China, has been crossbred with native cattle breeds. We hypothesised that the Chinese Holstein local population in Beijing share haplotypes with native Asian cattle breeds, the result of a sudden population expansion in the recent past. We also hypothesised that crossbreeding and population expansion left traces that shaped the genetic makeup of the breed. Evaluation of this was performed by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence analysis of Chinese Holstein cattle from Beijing (n = 41) and a comparison of them with the published mtDNA sequences (n = 293) of 14 Asian breeds with an emphasis on Chinese native cattle breeds. Three shared common haplotypes between Chinese Holstein cattle and native Asian cattle were found. Moreover, a high level of haplotype diversity in Chinese Holstein cattle (h = 0.9557) and low nucleotide diversity (${\pi}$ = 0.0052) was found, indicating a past population bottleneck followed by rapid population growth. These findings are supported by the significantly negative deviation of Tajima's D (-1.82085), the star-like pattern of dominant haplotypes and the pairwise mismatch distribution analysis, which showed a unimodal pattern.
This study re-evaluated Malthusian regime which signifies a negative relationship between population and income by employing the trend for the population and the income of the world and panel analysis during 1820-2006 periods. Empirical evidence suggested that Malthusian regime was existed during 1900-1994 periods in the world economy. Even each country had experienced such regime in its own economic growth path. However, the population drastically decreased and output upsurged since 1995, Malthusian regime had not been revealed any more since then. Such phenomenon is mainly resulted from the output is rather increased geometrically when the population is decreased because of a social reason such as decreasing in fertility rate. In addition to this, the population contributes to the production not by a quantity but a quality which is embodied by capital. Particularly, when the population which is associated with demand side is counted, the population is said to be evolved continuously in economy.
The genetic diversity and population history of the Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, were investigated with a nucleotide sequence analysis of 536 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) in 111 samples collected from four populations in Korea and one in Japan. In total, 28 haplotypes were defined by 27 variable nucleotide sites in the COI region examined. The observed haplotypes had a shallow haplotype genealogy and no geographical associations. Most of the populations had high haplotype diversity (0.656-0.788) and low nucleotide diversity (0.00165-0.00244), and significant negative values for Fu's $F_S$, suggesting rapid and recent population growth from an ancestral population and sudden population expansion. The pairwise fixation indices ($F_{ST}$) estimated with the exact test and the migration rates indicate that substantial gene flow occurs among these populations as a result of sea currents, except between the Yellow Sea coast of Korea (BUA) and the Pacific Ocean coast of Japan (JPA). These two populations (BUA and JPA) showed significant genetic differentiation and low migration rate.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to describe population-based prevention strategies for childhood obesity and to discuss its application in a city in Korea. Methods: Literature review and empirical findings for ongoing programs were performed to develop population-based prevention strategies for childhood obesity with the framework and principles of WHO population-based prevention strategies for childhood obesity. Results: The developed framework had five key strategies (supportive policies, supportive environment, supportive program, strategic development & leadership, and monitoring & evaluation) under hierarchic objectives (long-term, middle-term and short-term) with the vision of healthy growth and development of all children and youth. Each strategy included evidence-based action plans with WHO principles. Conclusions: The developed strategies have advanced the existing strategies for childhood obesity prevention by providing the sustainable and systematic framework and action plans based on ecological approach. Further, the feasibility for operating the strategies needs to be verified.

Since the human civilization, people's livelihood is dependent on natural resources primarily on forest. Human dimensions such as population, poverty, agricultural expansion and infrastructure development are some of the underlying factors and their interrelated associations which could play a vital role in deforestation and forest degradation. This process is not only related to the human population but also connected to the various socioeconomic factors. This paper focuses to link the spatio-temporal extent of population, poverty incidence and forest dependency and their severity on Terai forest of Nepal. Secondary data on censuses were used. ArcGIS and descriptive statistics were also used for data analysis. Based on analysis & literature review we concluded that population, poverty and forest dependency have largely expanded over time in Terai and their interrelated associations substantively influence on deforestation. However, the direct relationship of such factors with deforestation and forest degradation found to be incompatible, complex and hard to perceive with fragmented and inconsistency censuses data. So, deforestation and forest degradation issues intertwined with socioeconomic factors need detailed analysis to comprehend where these linkages are still unravel.
This study estimated the mound and termite population density in the two study plots in Durokkopin Nature Reserve, Western Australia between 2003 and 2004. The mound density and size were greater in the woodland than in the shrubland. The annual growth rate of mounds was minimal. Some mounds decreased in volume during the 14 month observation period in both study plots. There were no significant differences in the termite population per mound or in the proportion of each caste between the two study plots. The size of the termite population in the mound progressively increased from the small to larger mounds. Overall, of the two favoured habitats, woodland appears to be more optimal for this termite species than the shrubland.
