Age and growth of red tongue sole (Cynoglossus joyneri), were studied using samples from the coastal waters off Yeosu, Korea, from January to December, 2001. Sagittal otoliths had relatively clear annuli. Marginal index of otolith dropped sharhly in August suggesting that each annulus was formed once a year In August. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index indicated that spawning peaked between July and September. The oldest fish observed in this study was 4 years old for both of females and males. Relationships between the otolith radius (R) and total length (L) were: L=14.1R-0.098 for females, and L=11.9R+1.83 for males. Relationships between total length and body weight $(W)\;were:\;W=0.0021L^{3.24}\;for\;females,\;and\;W=0.0014L^{3.39}$ for males. Growth in length of the fish was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's growth equation as:$L_{t}=29.06\;(1-e^{-0.19(t+2.40)})\;for\;females\;and\;L_{t}=27.44 (1-e^{-0.17(t+2.84)})$ for males.
The objective of this study is to investigate morphological characteristics of seeds and effects of environmental factors such as light and temperature on the germination and seedling growth of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, Codonopsis lanceolata, Platycodon glandiflorum, Which belongs to Campanulaceae and useful for on oriental medicine materials. Seed shape of Codonopsis lanceolata is Elliptic. Platycodon glandiflorum is Oblong. Color of seed coats varied from yellow to dark brown. Seed size of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica is 1.37mm in length, 0.69mm in width. One thousand-seed weight of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica is 258mg. Seed size of Codonopsis lanceolata is 4.45mm in length, 2.11mm in width. One thousand-seed weight of Codonopsis lanoceolata is 1,278mg. Seed size of Platycodon glandiflorum is 2.31mm in length, 1.10mm in width. One thousand-seed weight of Platycodon glandiflorum is 988mg. Optimum temperatures for seed germination and seedling growth range from 20 to $25^{\circ}C$.
Larval growth of the oyster, Crassostrea nippona, was investigated at the different conditions such as water volume, depth of culture vessel and initiative feeding time at $23^{\circ}C$. As a result, morphological changes were occurred during the early larval growth. That is, shell length was higher than shell height at the time of D-shaped larvae. Later, the length became equal to the hight when their shell length reached $127\mum$and then shell height increased rapidly. Some of pediveliger larvae with the size of $360\mum\;in\;shell\;length\;and\;385\mum$ in shell height began to temporarily settle on the substrate after 18 days. The result also indicated that the depth of culture vessel turned out to be an important factor rather than water volume for the larval growth. The fist feeding time of oyster larvae appeared to be the first day after fertilization.
This work has been investigated the ralationship between single surface crack length and crack depth have influence on the fatigue life. The simulation based on experimental results of 2.25 Cr-1Mo steel at various crack configuration ratios has enabled successful prediction of fatigue life at room temperature. The effect of crack depth should be considered for predicting fatigue crack growth rates as well as that of surface crack length. It is also shwn that the crack growth mechanisms are in good agreement with expreimental data according to the interaction of crack length and crack depth.
For the culture the population growth, shell length and spawning seasons of Gomphina veneriformis, and its environmental factors, were investigated at the Jeju coastal regions. from Feburuary, 1975 to March, 1976. The soil movements of the tidal flats where the clams inhabited were relatively rapid during the strong tidal actions. The rate of population growth were rapid from April to September, then became obsure. The relative growth equations of the shell height (SH) and the shell breadth (SB) against the shell length (SL) of the clams were as follows: Changhung : SH=0.751 SL + 0.685, SB=0.448 SL-0.630 Pyoson : SH-0.775 SL - 0.115, SB=0.464 SL-1.008 Hwhason : SH=0.794 SL - 0.923, SB=0.485 SL-1.155 Kwhagzee : SH=0.771 SL - 0.644, SB=0.455 SL-1.049 The meat weight increases of the clams were continued from March to late June, then it decreased sharply up to late August. The spawning of the clams seems to be late from June to Spetember in the regions studied.
To obtain the basic information for late-cultivation of sweet potato [Ipomoea hatalas (L.) Lam. cv. 'Jinhongmi'], vine growth and storage root yield were investigated in variously cutting sizes (10, 20, and 30 cm) and planting depths (1~4 nodes in 30 cm vine) using black-film vinyl mulching cultivation ($75{\times}25\;cm$ planting density, June 20). At 30 days after planting, main vine length, number of node, and vine fresh weight were significantly affected by the cutting length, and these were significantly different 10 and 30 cm at 120 days. The vine elongation affected by planting depths showed the best growth in 2-nodes planting depth and the lowest growth in 4-nodes planting depth at 30 days, but the vine growth was not significantly different among planting depths at 120 days. Number of storage root per plant, weight of storage root per plant, mean weight of storage root and yield of storage root were increased in longer cutting length, and those in 10 cm cutting length were significantly reduced compared to the 20 and 30 cm cutting length. Number of storage root per plant in the deeper planting was much increased, but mean weight of storage root was much decreased. Yield of storage root per 10a was highest in 3-nodes planting depth. Therefore, planting methods by cutting length over 20 cm and planting depth of 2~3 nodes in late-cultivation of sweet potato will be more efficient to improve the vine growth and storage root yield.
Samples of Corbicula japonica Prime of Jujin estuary in Gochang were collected from July 2000 to September 2001. Age of C. japonica was determined from the rings on the shell. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index (MI') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of February and March. The relationship between shell length (SL; mm) and total weight (TW; g) was expressed by the following equation: TW = 1.0942 ${\times}10^{-4}SL^{3.3217}$ ($r^2$ = 0.9905). Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: SH = 0.9174 SL - 0.9935 ($r^2$ = 0.9885). The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation; SW = 0.5925 SL - 1.1706 ($r^2$ = 0.9726). Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's growth curve were expressed as: $$SL_t = 46.4861[1-e^{-0.3383(t+0.0958)}]$$, $$TW_t = 34.54[1-e^{-0.3383(t+0.0958)}]^3.3217$$.
Radioactive elements Li/sup +/, Rb/sup +/and Cs/sup +/ effect the period shortening in proportion to the higher concentration on the growth of Neurospora crassa. 1 mM LiCl presented the result of the period length 0.52 h shorter than average circadian rhythm 21.66 h. 1 mM RbCl reduced the period length 1.13 h than control period 21.89 h and 1 mM CsCl reduced 2.12 h than control period 21.89 h. In the equal concentration Cs/sup +/ had an extreme effect. Fatal doses of Li/sup +/, Rb/sup +/ and Cs/sup +/ are 20mM, 30mM and 20mM. In the fatal concentration Neurospora didn't develop more after 7 days and the formation of spores were not given in regular order. Circadian length of Neurospora decreased generally at the last cycle of the growth.
An experiment was carried out to determine the effects of priming and growth regulator treatment of seeds on the emergence and seedling growth of rice, Oryza sativa L. (cv. 'Ilpumbyeo'). Normal seeds were primed in a -0.6 MPa polyethylene glycol solution at 15$^{\circ}C$ for four days with air-bubbling. Then both primed and non-primed seeds were soaked in water, 100 ppm GA$_3$, 2 ppm ABA, and 10 ppm kinetin solutions for 24 hours. The seeds were planted in soil at 3 and 5 cm depths and allowed to germinate in a growth cabinet at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Generally, the emergence rate at the 3 cm seeding depth was higher and emerged faster compared with the 5 cm seeding depth. The emergence rate of primed seeds was higher and emerged faster compared to non-primed seeds. GA$_3$ and kinetin treatments were the most effective to improve the emergence rate of non-primed seeds. Coleoptile length at the 5 cm seeding depth was longer than that at the 3 cm seeding depth. Leaf number, plant height, and root length of primed seedlings were higher compared with non-primed seeds. GA$_3$ promoted the elongation of plant height and mesocotyle length.
Postpubertal craniofacial growth changes were assessed from serial lateral cephalograms taken at which subjects were 16 and 18 years of age. The sample consisted of 19 male and 14 female subjects with no previous orthodontic treatment who had normal occlusion. The craniofacial growth changes of these samples during this study period might be summarized as follows 1. Significant increase in mean maxillary and mandibular length, cranial base length, posterior md anterior facial height were observed at the age period studied in male(P<0.05), however, in female significant increase was observed only mandibular length(Ar-Gn, Ar-Go) and anterior and posterior facial height(P<0.05). 2. Total growth increment of all measumenats were below 1mm in female, but in male, total mandibular(Ar-Gn) growth increment was 2.0mm and those of mandibular tody length, ram length, posterior facial height, and anteior facial height were 1 to 1.54mm and the others were below 1mm 3. A closing, forward rotation of the mandible occured with a significant decrease in mandibular plane angle of $0.61^{\circ}$ in male(P<0.01). 4. Summarized the findings, even though statistically significant growth changes in some dimensions of female were observed, the amount of growth change were very small, however, in male the growth changes of some dimensions associated with mandible were significant and considerable amount.
