  • Densification, grain growth, and phase transformation of nanocrystalline ceramic powder were investigated under pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing. A constitutive model for densification of nanocrystalline ceramic powder was proposed and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). A grain growth model was also proposed by including the effect of applied stress on grain growth when phase transformation occurs. Finite element results by using the proposed models well predicted densification behavior, deformation, and grain growth of nanocrystalline titania powder during pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing.

  • We propose a primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) initiation model of Alloy 600 that considers the stress triaxiality factor to apply to finite element analysis. We investigated the correlation between stress triaxiality effects and PWSCC growth behavior in cold-worked Alloy 600 stream generator tubes, and identified an additional stress triaxiality factor that can be added to Garud's PWSCC initiation model. By applying the proposed PWSCC initiation model considering the stress triaxiality factor, PWSCC growth simulations based on the macroscopic phenomenological damage mechanics approach were carried out on the PWSCC growth tests of various cold-worked Alloy 600 steam generator tubes and compact tension specimens. As a result, PWSCC growth behavior results from the finite element prediction are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • It is well known that tensile peak overloads may significantly delay suubsequent constant amplitude fatigue crack growth in many materials. Since real structures are usually subjected to complex load histories, the ability to predict accurate crack growth under realistic service conditions is of major engineering interest. This paper describes experiments on fatigue track growth in the integrally stiffened panel of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The effect of shape parameters and overload position on the fatigue crack growth behavior of integrally stiffened panels are discussed. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions have been drawn: the overall fatigue crack growth retardation resulting from single overload in the stiffened panels was generally larger in the larger thickness ratio, although the retardation trends, according to the change in overload positions, were similar to those exhibited in the non-stiffened panels.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of omitting low-amplitude cycles from a flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 2124-T851 aluminum alloy specimens. Three test spectra are generated by omitting small load ranges as counted by the rain-flow count method. The crack growth test results are compared with the data obtained from the flight-simulation loading. The experimental results show that omission of the load ranges below 5% of the maximum load does not significantly affect crack growth behavior, because these are below the initial stress intensity factor range. However, in the case of omitting the load ranges below 15% of the maximum load, crack growth rates decrease, and therefore crack growth curve deviates from the crack growth data under the flight-simulation loading. To optimize the load range that can be omitted, crack growth curves are simulated by the stochastic crack growth model. The prediction shows that the omission level can be extended to 8% of the maximum load and test time can be reduced by 59%.

  • Plane-strain fatigue crack growth behavior of 7075-76 aluminium alloy was investigated by using side-grooved through-thickness center cracked tension(CCT) specimens. The effect of side-groove on the stress intensity factor value was examined. The effective thickness expression of $B_{e}$= $B_{o}$-( $B_{o}$-( $B_{ o-B_{n}^{2}}$ $B_{o}$ is the most appropriate to evaluate the stress intensity factor of side-grooved CCT specimen for fatigue testing. Fatigue crack growth rates can be well described by the effective stress intensity factor range based on closure measurements, for both side-grooved and uniform thickness specimens. Provided that the thickness of specimen meets the requirements for valid plane-strain fracture toughness, uniform thickness specimen data may be assumed to approximately represent the plane strain through-thickness crack growth behavior.ehavior.r.

  • We propose the crack growth rate equation which will model fatigue crack growth rate behavior such that constant stress amplitude fatigue crack growth behavior can be predicted. Constant stress amplitude fatigue tests are conducted for four materials under three stress ratios of R=0.2, R=0.4 and R=0.6. Materials which have different mechanical properties i.e. stainless steel, low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and aluminum alloy are used. Through constant stress amplitude fatigue test by using unloading elastic compliance method, it is confirmed that crack closure is a close relationship with fatigue crack propagation. We describe simply fatigue crack propagation behavior as a function of the effective stress intensity factor range ($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$=U .$\Delta$K) for all three regions (threshold region, stable region). The fatigue crack growth rate equation is given by da / dN=A($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$$\Delta$ $K_{o}$ )$^{m}$ / ($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$$\Delta$K) Where, A and m are material constants, and $\Delta$ $K_{o}$ is stress intensity factor range at low $\Delta$K region. $K_{cf}$ is critical fatigue stress intensity factor.actor.

  • To examine the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue behavior in structural steel, fatigue tests under acid fog atmosphere were carried out in comparison with distilled water. The corrosive c omponents contained in acid fog pile up the corrosion products on crack face and show a crack branching and crack tip blunting. Therefore, due to these workings crack growth rate was reduced by decreasing the effective stress range in crack tip rather than under distilled water. Also the effect of sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid fog, and testing speed on fatigue crack growth were examined. It was found that corrosion behavior was remarkably dependent upon pH and Hz rather than components of acid fog. According as pH and testing speed decrease below a specific value, crack growth was accelerated in comparison with distilled water. This reveals that due to liquid having strong acidity and slow speed of test the crack face dissolution was promoted, so crack closure was disturbed in the process of stress descent.

  • Three point bending tests of single edge notched beam (SENB) specimens were carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of the fine-grain isotropic nuclear grade graphite, IG-11. To measure the crack initiation point and the subsequent crack growth, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and a traveling microscope were used. The effects of test variables like initial crack length, specimen thickness, notch type and loading rate on the measured fracture toughness, $K_Q$, were investigated. Based on the test results, the ranges of the test variables to measure the reliable fracture toughness value were proposed. During the crack growth, the rising R-curve behavior was observed in IG-11 graphite when the superficial crack length measured on the specimen surface was used. The increase of crack growth resistance was discussed in terms of crack bridging, crack meandering, crack branching, microcracking and crack deflection, which increase the surface energy and friction force.

  • Single crystals, which have complexed composition, are fabricated by solid state grain growth. However, it is hard to achieve stable properties in a single crystal due to trapped pores. Aerosol deposition (AD) is suitable for fabrication of single crystals with stable properties because this process can make a high density coating layer. Because of their unique features (nano sized grains, stress inner site), it is hard to fabricate single crystals, and so studies of grain growth behavior of AD film are essential. In this study, a $BaTiO_3$ coating layer with ${\sim}9{\mu}m$ thickness is fabricated using an aerosol deposition method on (100) and (110) cut $SrTiO_3$ single crystal substrates, which are adopted as seeds for grain growth. Each specimen is heat-treated at various conditions (900, 1,100, and $1,300^{\circ}C$ for 5 h). $BaTiO_3$ layer shows different growth behavior and X-ray diffraction depending on cutting direction of $SrTiO_3$ seed. Rectangular pillars at $SrTiO_3$ (100) and laminating thin plates at $SrTiO_3$ (110), respectively, are observed.
