This study was performed to investigate nutritional effect and the utilization possibility of rapeseed oil which could replace the imported edible oils and oil crops. The proximate compositions of a recommendable cultivar(Mokpo Dangyo 19) and a native kind(Asahi) and the characteristics of these rapeseed oils were analyzed. The animal experiment of these rapeseed oils was carried out during 8 weeks of growing periods after weanling. Forty male weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 3 diet groups of Dangyo 19 oil, Asahi oil and commercial Soybean oil. Mokpo Dangyo 19 variety contained more lipids than Asahi variety by 8% and there was no difference in physiochemical characteristics between Dangyo 19 oil and Asahi oil except that erucic acid was contained little in Dangyo 19 oil but 50% in Asahi oil. Body weight gain, FER(Feed efficiency ratio) and PER(Protein efficiency ratio) of rats fed Dangyo 19 oil were higher than those of rats fed Asahi oil and organ weights such as liver, kidney and epididymal fat pads weights of rats fed Dangyo 19 oil were significantly higher(P<0.05) thanthose of rats fed Asahi oil. the apparent digistibility of total diet and total lipid were higher in rats fed the diets containing Dangyo 19 oil than Asahi oil. The content of total lipid in heart in heart were not significantly different with dietary oil kinds. The content of total lipid in liver increased with age in all rapeseed oil groups.
To investigate the influence of age and dietary fat level on the immune function and the growing potential of the fibroblast cells, male rats of 2 month, 6 month and 30 month of age were fed either 6% or 30% fat diet for 16 weeks. The weight of thymus decreased linearly with increasing age. And this age-dependent degeneration of thymus was delayed in rats fed low fat diets. The blastogenesis of spleen lymphocytes to PHA, ConA, and PWM was decreased with increasing age, however, no effect of dietary fat level was observed. The age-related decline in ratios of PHA/ConA response may suggest that T suppressor cell activity increases with age. In cell culture system, lung fibroblast cells from 30M rats showed lower plating efficiency. longer doubling time. and shorter cumulative doubling potential than those from 2M or 6M animals. Also. the morphology of fibroblasts from 30M rats was tended to be rouned rather than flattened and more variable in size and being generally larger. wherease those from 2M and 6M rats were uniform in size and adhered tightly to the culture vessel in ordered arrays. Therefore fibroblast cell culture system tried in this study reflects the changes of cellular aging.
The effects of various levels of copper(Cu) intake on the concentrations of copper, iron (Fe) and 3inc(Zn) in rat tissues were studied in growing rats. For different groups the drinking water was supplemented with 0(control), 25, 50, 100 and 200ppm Cu(as copper sulphate) for 1 day respectively. All animal groups were fed with the control diet (Cu contents, 12.8%mg/kg diet) during the experiment. At the end of the 4 week experiment, body weight gain was slightly lower in the Cu supply groups than in control group. Liver and serum Cu were significantly higher in 50, 100 and 200ppm Cu of male and in 200ppm Cu of female than in control groups. Spleen Cu was significantly increased by the supplementation of Cu. Liver and heart Fe of male and heart Fe of female were increased by incresing supplementary Cu levels. In 50ppm Cu group, liver, spleen and kidney Fe of female increased but the others did not. Fe of tissues was different in male and female rats according to Cu levels supplied. Serum Zn of male and female was significantly lower in 50, 100 and 200ppm Cu groups than in control and 25ppm Cu groups. When supplemented with Cu levels there were no significant differences among groups for liver, kidney, spleen and heart Zn as well as heart and kidney Cu.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of liquid culture of Agaricus blazei Murill on the weight gains, food efficiency ratios, serum protein and mineral levels, and serum enzyme activities in growing male rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were given four different types of diets for a succeeding period of 6 weeks, respectively: a normal diet group, a control diet group (normal diet + 15% lard + 0.5% cholesterol), a 30% or 40% A. blazei diet groups (control diet + 30% or 40% A. blazei in water) according to the levels of A. blazei supplementation. The body weight gains, food efficiency ratios, and the liver of the rats fed control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were significantly increased compared to rats fed the normal diet, but those of rats fed the 30% and 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the control diet. The concentrations of total protein, albumin, glucose, and hematocrit value in serum of rats fed the control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the normal diet. The concentrations of urea and creatinine in serum of rats fed the 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the control diet. but the urea of rats fed the 30% and 40% A. blazei diets were significantly decreased compared to rats fed the normal diet. The concentrations of Ca, P, Fe and Mg, and $Ca^{++}$, $K^+$, $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ of rats fed the control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the normal diet. There were no differences in the activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, $\gamma$-glutamyltranspeptidase and alkaline phosphatase in the serum among the experimental groups. In conclusion, the rats fed the A. blazei maintained normal protein and mineral levels, and enzyme activities of serum. But the A. blazei feeding could not decrease the body and liver weights in the rats fed high cholesterol diets.
To study the effects of the age and the dietary protein content on Ca metabolism male rats of 1 month 6 month 12 month of age were fed experimental diets containing 5%, 15% or 50% casein for 4 weeks. Food and ca intake were higher in old rats and in high protein groups. The weight ash and Ca contents of femur and tibia were higher in old rats. The higher dietary protein level resulted in higher skeletal weigh ash and Ca contents. But high protein diet(50% casein) lead to reduced bone mineral density(ash/dry bone weight) and Ca density(Ca/dry bone weight) in 1 month old rats. Low protein diet(5% casein) on the other hand reduced the bone growth even though the bone density was higher in this group. The ill effect of low protein diet was not evident in 12 month old rats. Glomerular filteration rate(GFR) and urinary Ca excretionincreased with age and with dietary protein level especially in 12 month old rats. Serum immunoreactive parathyroid hormone(iPTH) level tended to be higher in aged rats but was not affected by dietary protein level except 1 month old rats where 50% protein group showed significantly higher value. This study showed that the dietary protein level seemed to have different effect on Ca metabo-lism in rats of different age., The low bone density in the high protein group of growing rats may be due to the higher iPTH level and increased urinary Ca. The dietary protein level however had no effects on the bone composition in aged rats even though the higher urinary Ca excretion. In conclusion this study suggests that high protein intake from young may lead to less peak bone mass and to increase the bone loss in later years, which would increase the risk for osteporosis.
In this third report influence of vibration on growth and on some metabolism of young growing rats fed on varying levels of protein was investigated. Forty eight (48) young growing male rats weighing about 60 grams were used, grouping to four (4) groups, twelve (12) rats each group. They were fed on 8%, 13%, 19%, and 26% casein diet respectively (See the table 1) for the period of 10 weeks experiment. During the experimental period the half number of the rats of each group were subjected to a given degree of vibration for two (2) hours daily. Observations for growth rate, food and protein efficiency ratios, organs development, cholesterol levels in aorta, total nitrogen, urea nitrogen and creatinine levels in urine may be summarized as follows 1. Growth was impaired by the vibration in all groups including 26% easein diet. 2. There is tendeney that in higher protein diets, the organs (See table 3) developed more well. And also the impairment of the organs development by the vibration revealed less in higher protein diets. 3. Food and protein efficiency ratios were generally decreased under vibration and the food efficiency was improved by increasing the protein level in diet. 4. Total and free cholesteral levels in aorta were increased by the vibration. Ester from/tatal ratio was 17.7% and 17.3% respectively at 8% and 13% protein diets and 54.8% and 54.2% at 19% and 26% protein diets. These show that, in higher protein diets, the vibration doesn't influence the cholesterol ratio. 5. Total nitrogen, urea nirogen and creatinine levels in urine were increased by increasing the protion level in diet and also increased by the vibration. 6. It seems that, according to the above observations, the vibration used in this experiment influenced, in certain extent, on physical development, physiological availability of nutrients, and on body metabolism. And it is also thought that higher protein diets act some good role in protecting body from suffering from vibration.
Purpose : Nowadays, there are many studies of growth retardation treatment by oriental medical therapy. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Hwalhyulsungjang-san (Huoxuechengzhang-san) and KC101 on physical development in growth, Methods : 60 young (3 weeks old) male rats, whose mean weight was $46.8{\pm}0,7g$, were divided into 5 groups : groups A, B, C, and D were fed an experimental diet containing respectively Hwalhyulsungjang-san 2.5%, Hwalhyulsungjang-san 7.5%, KC101 5.0%, and KC101 10.0%, and the other group were fed an AIN-diet containing neither Hwalhyulsungjang-san nor KC101 as a control. Study of each group used 2 rats and was repeated in 6 times. Body weight, daily weight gain, dietary intake, body length, femur length, backbone length and serum concentration of IGF-I and hemoglobin were measured. Result : 1. Body weight and daily weight gain of group D (KC101 10%) were highest; dietary intake of group D was also increased by 13% over the control group. 2. Average body length of group D was increased to 1.69cm, which was 3.2% over the control group. Backbone length of group D was also increased 4% compared to control group. 3. Serum concentration of IGF-I of group D increased 17% compared to control group. 4. Serum concentration of hemoglobin of group B (Hwalhyulsungjang-san 7.5%) increased 8% compared to control group. Conclusion : This study showed that Hwalhyulsungjang-san and KC101 composed of oriental medicinal stuffs have effect on physical development in growing rats. There were not any statistical meaning compared to control group, but this study suggests that intake of these compounds from a young age may lead to increase physical development in growth.
This study was intended to observe some nutritional effects of the boiling water extracts of mugwort powder in albino rats. Forty young male albino rats of Sprague-Dawley strain, body weight of $77{\pm}5g$ were employed for the experiment. They were divided into 5 dietary group, 0 (control), 1, 2, 4, and 8g% mugwort powder extract supplemented into the control diet, and fed each corresponding diet to the rats for 4 weeks. They were observed on intake of food and protein, efficiencies of food and protein, amount of energy intake, growing rate, and levels of hematocrit and hemoglobin in the blood. The amount of intakes of food, protein and energy was the highest in the group fed on 4g% mugwort extracts supplemented diet than any other groups studied. The efficiencies of food and protein in the groups fed on mugwort extracts supplemented diets were all lower than that of the control group. The growing rate of the group fed on 1g% mugwort extracts supplemented diet was the highest, however, there was no significant difference among them. The levels of hemoglobin of the groups fed 4g% or 8g% mugwort extracts supplemented diet was higher than that of the control, but not significant.
Testosterone deficiency increased bone resorption, giving rise to osteoporosis. Testosterone deficiency also increased lipid peroxidation and free radical formation. Free radicals have been shown to be toxic to osteoblasts as well as to activate osteoclasts. In this study, the effects of giving an antioxidant, i.e. vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil on bone mineral density and calcium content was studied. Palm vitamin E prevented the loss in bone mineral density due to orchidectomy, seen in the whole femur, proximal amd midshaft regions, as well as L4 vertebra. Similar observations were seen in bone calcium content of the L5 vertebra. Giving palm olein also prevented the loss in bone mineral density in the femoral midshaft and L4 vertebra; and bone calcium content in the L5 vertebra. In conclusion, vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil was effective in preventing the loss in bone mineral density and calcium content of orchidectomized male rats. This action is probably due to its role as an antioxidant.
Growing male rats were allowed to have food from two dishes containing isocaloric, isoprotein 15% or 70% carbohydrate diet for 4, 8, 12 or 24 hours a day at the beginning of the dark period. Four hours of feeding were not enough to grow though the first 4 hours of intake were significantly higher than other periods. 4-hour and 8-hour feeding groups consumed significantly less carbohydrate calorie than 12-hour and ad libitum feeding groups, which hence, showed lower ratio of carbohydrate to protein in the total food consumed. The fasting brain tryptophan and serotonin levels among groups were not significantly different. It appears therefore that the manipulation of the feeding period could be valuable in suppression of carbohydrate appetitie, especially carbohydrate carving.
