희귀 행렬 근사 S-FEM을 이용한 비선형 광펄스의 편광 모드 분산 해석 (Analysis of Polarization Mode Dispersion in Nonlinear Optical Pulse propagation by SS-FEM adopting Approximated Sparse Matrix)

  • 광섬유 통신 시스템이 고속화되고 장거리를 전송하게 될 수록 편광모드 분산의 중요성은 더욱 부각되어 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 복굴절 광섬유에서 비선형 광펄스의 전파특성을 편광 모드 분산의 영향을 고려하여 시뮬레이션하였으며 이러한 현상이 발생되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 광섬유 비션형성에 의해서 GVD(Group Velocity Dispersion)와 마찬가기로 PMD(Polarization Mode Dispersion)에서도 부분적인 보상 현상이 나타남을 수치 결과를 통해 알 수 있었다. 이러한 광 전송 시뮬레이션을 구현하기 위해서 기존의 단계분할 푸리에 방식 (SS-FM, Split-Step Fourier Method)보다 장거리 전송시 오차의 발생이 적은 단계 분할 유한 요소법)SS-FEM, Split-Step Finite Element Method)을 적용하였으며, 또한 그 단점인 수행 속도를 개선한 희귀 행렬 근사 단계 분할 유한 요소법을 제안하였다. 그 결과 제안된 방법이 기존의 푸리에 연산법이나 일반적인 유한 요소법과 비교하여 더 빠른 수행 속도를 나타내는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Synthesis and Characterization of banana-shaped achiral molecules

  • New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4(3-fluoro-9-alkenyloxy) phenyl-iminomethylbenzoate]s and 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4-(3-fluoro-10-alkanyloxy) phenyliminomethyl benzoate]s were synthesized by varying the substituent (X=H, F, or Cl); their electrooptical properties are described. The smectic phases, including a switchable chiral smectic C ($SmC^{\ast}$) phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and triangular method. The presence of vinyl end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped molecules induced a decrease in melting temperature. The smectic phase having the undecenyloxy group such $as-(CH_2)_9CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelectric switching, and its value of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field was 2250 $nC/cm^2$, while the value of spontaneous polarization of the smectic phase having the decanyloxy group such as $-(CH2)_9CH_3$ was 3700 $nC/cm^2$. We could obtain the ferroelectric phase with low isotropic temperature by varying the end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules.

  • The electrochemical properties of novel metal powders were investigated for the electrode materias of polymer electrolyte memebrane electrolysis. Two types of Pt black and $IrO_2$ powder electrodes were hot-pressed on the polymer electrolyte membrane to form membrane electrode assembly. The galvanodynamic polarization methode was used to characterize the electrochemical properties of both electrodes. From the experimental results, we concluded that the $IrO_2$ powder electrode exhibits better electrochemical performance than Pt black as cathode material for the electrolysis.

Electrochemical Catalytic Behavior of Cu2O Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells

  • To enhance the performance of cathodes at low temperatures, a Cu-coated cathode is prepared, and its electrochemical performance is examined by testing its use in a single cell. At $620^{\circ}C$ and a current density of $150mAcm^{-2}$, a single cell containing the Cu-coated cathode has a significantly higher voltage (0.87 V) during the initial operation than does that with an uncoated cathode (0.79 V). According to EIS analysis, the high voltage of the cell with the Cu-coated cathode is due to the dramatic decrease in the high-frequency resistance related to electrochemical reactions. From XPS analysis, it is confirmed that the Cu is initially in the form of $Cu_2O$ and is converted into CuO after 150 h of operation, without any change in the state of the Ni or Li. Therefore, the high initial cell voltage is confirmed to be due to $Cu_2O$. Because $Cu_2O$ is catalytically active toward $O_2$ adsorption and dissociation, $Cu_2O$ on a NiO cathode enhances cell performance and reduces cathode polarization. However, the cell with the Cu-coated cathode does not maintain its high voltage because $Cu_2O$ is oxidized to CuO, which demonstrates similar catalytic activity toward $O_2$ as NiO.

Crevice Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels in Natural Sea Water with different Post Welding Treatment

  • Crevice corrosion of stainless steels in natural seawater was investigated for several post weld treatments; as-annealed, as-welded, pickled, and ground. The results confirmed the effect of the biofilm on the cathodic reaction leading to an ennoblement of the rest potential. The degree of ennoblement of corrosion potential depends on the surface finish. As-annealed and pickled samples show stable corrosion potential approaching to 200 ~ 300 mV (SCE) while as-welded and ground samples show the fluctuating corrosion potential. This points to a situation where there are conflicting effects determining the trend in free corrosion potential. Crevice corrosion initiation will tend to pull the free corrosion potential in the active direction, whereas the presence of biofilm will tend to ennoble corrosion potential. There was no visible attack on UNS S31803, S32550, and 2205W. Therefore, those stainless steel grades appeared to be resistant to crevice corrosion in natural seawater on condition of weld metal.

면대면과 CMC의 집단 극화 현상비교 (The Comparision between CMC Group and Face-to-Face group on Group Polarization)

  • 본 연구에서 면대면과 CMC상황에서 기저율과 개별정보를 통합해야하는 과제를 집단으로 결정하는 과제를 수행한 후, 집단 구성원들은 자신의 의견과 집단의 의견에 관해 다른 확신 수준을 보임을 발견하였다. 면대면 집단의 구성원이었던 사람들은 자신은 기저율과 개별정보를 둘 다 적게 사용하였지만 자신의 집단은 이 두 가지 정보를 모두 많이 사용하였다고, 지각하였으며, CMC집단의 구성원이었던 사람들은 자신과 자신의 집단이 유사한 정도로 기저율과 개별정보를 사용하였다고 지각하였다. 본 연구에서는 면대면 집단 조건에서는 집단 극화가 발생하였지만, CMC집단의 경우에는 오히려 억제되는 결과를 보였다. 이는 기존의 연구에 비추어 볼 때, 토론 시간의 부족에 기인한 것으로 고려되어지며, 추가 연구를 통해 더 많은 시간이 주어질 때 이 두 집단간에 어떠한 차이가 발생하는지 알아보고자 한다.

Linear and Nonlinear Dielectric Ceramics for High-Power Energy Storage Capacitor Applications

  • Dielectric materials with inherently high power densities and fast discharge rates are particularly suitable for pulsed power capacitors. The ongoing multifaceted efforts on developing these capacitors are focused on improving their energy density and storage efficiency, as well as ensuring their reliable operation over long periods, including under harsh environments. This review article summarizes the studies that have been conducted to date on the development of high-performance dielectric ceramics for employment in pulsed power capacitors. The energy storage characteristics of various lead-based and lead-free ceramics belonging to linear and nonlinear dielectrics are discussed. Various strategies such as mechanical confinement, self-confinement, core-shell structuring, glass incorporation, chemical modifications, and special sintering routes have been adopted to tailor the electrical properties and energy storage performances of dielectric ceramics. In addition, this review article highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of pulsed power capacitors.

Theoretical Studies of Substituent Effects on S$_N$2 Transition States$^\dag$

  • Effects of substituents in the nucleophile(X), the substrate(Y) and the leaving group(Z) on the structure of $S_N2$ transition states have been analyzed by considering effects of four components, electrostatic($E_{es}$), exchange repulsion ($E_{ex}$), polarization($E)_{pl}$) and charge transfer($E_{ct}$) terms, of interaction between the reactants on the degree of bond making and bond breaking. Prediction of net effects of all substituents(X, Y and Z) on the degree of bond making were found to be clearcut whereas the effect of an electron withdrawing group on the substrate (Y = EWG) on the degree of bond breaking was complex; the substituent(Y = EWG) is normally carbon-leaving group($C^{\ast}$-L) bond tightening($E_{pl}$ dominance) but becomes $C^{\ast}$-L bond loosening when the bond is strongly antibonding ($E_{ct}$ dominance). Our model calculations on the reaction of $CH_2XNH_2$ with $YCH_2COOCH_2Z$ using energy decomposition scheme have confirmed that predictions based on our analysis are correct.

토양의 함수율에 빠른 상수도용 도복장 강관의 부식거동에 관한 연구 (Corrosion behavior of coated steel pipes for water works with water content of soil)

  • The corrosion rate of buried steel pipes for water works was investigated under soil environment. Steel pipe shows various characteristics caused by complicated environment condition of underground and especially the corrosion rate of it depends on the resistivity of soil controlled by content of water. In this paper, the corrosion behavior of steel pipe was observed by polarization test under soil and the silica sand in the water content range of 0-50%. Generally it is well known that the resistivity of soil decreased rapidly over 15% water content. In fact the corrosion rate, corrosion potential, and corrosion consumption (MPY) of steel pipe were shown very different aspects within 20% water content.

  • 본 논문은 세계화가 우리나라 제조업 사업체의 성장과 양극화에 미친 영향을 살펴본 것이다. 본 논문은 먼저 이론적으로 세계화가 성장 및 양극화에 미치는 영향 및 그 구체적 메커니즘을 최근 이질적 기업의 무역이론들을 중심으로 논의하고, 나아가 관련 실증적 증거들이 존재하는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통하여 본 논문은 세계화가 1990년대 이후 우리나라 제조업 사업체의 생산성 향상뿐 아니라 기업 간 생산성 및 숙련도별 임금 양극화 모두를 초래한 공통적 원인으로 작용하였음을 보여주었다. 본 연구는 최근 세계화된 경제환경하에서 왜 극소수의 대기업만이 특출한 성과를 나타내고 있는지를 이해하는 데 도움이 된다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 세계화의 부작용을 줄이고 그 편익을 보다 많은 기업들이 누릴 수 있도록 하기 위한 정책방향을 제시한다.
