At the tailings dam of the disused Brukunga pyrite mine in South Australia, reaction of groundwater with the tailings causes the formation and discharge of sulphuric acid. There is a need to improve remediation efforts by decreasing groundwater flow through the tailings dam. Geophysical methods have been investigated to determine whether they can be used to characterise variations in depth to watertable and map preferred groundwater flow paths. Three methods were used: transient electromagnetic (TEM) soundings, direct current (DC) soundings and profiling, and self potential (SP) profiling. The profiling methods were used to map the areal extent of a given response, while soundings was used to determine the variation in response with depth. The results of the geophysical surveys show that the voltages measured with SP profiling are small and it is hard to determine any preferred channels of groundwater flow from SP data alone. Results obtained from TEM and DC soundings, show that the DC method is useful for determining layer boundaries at shallow depths (less than about 10 m), while the TEM method can resolve deeper structures. Joint use of TEM and DC data gives a more complete and accurate geoelectric section. The TEM and DC measurements have enabled accurate determination of depth to groundwater. For soundings centred at piezometers, this depth is consistent with the measured watertable level in the corresponding piezometer. A map of the watertable level produced from all the TEM and DC soundings at the site shows that the shallowest level is at a depth of about 1 m, and occurs at the southeast of the site, while the deepest watertable level (about 17 m) occurs at the northwest part of the site. The results indicate that a possible source of groundwater occurs at the southeast area of the dam, and the aquifer thickness varies between 6 and 13 m. A map of the variation of resistivity of the aquifer has also been produced from the TEM and DC data. This map shows that the least resistive (i.e., most conductive) section of the aquifer occurs in the northeast of the site, while the most resistive part of the aquifer occurs in the southeast. These results are interpreted to indicate a source of fresh (resistive) groundwater in the southeast of the site, with a possible further source of conductive groundwater in the northeast.

The purpose of this study was to understand the unique and complicated feature of urban stream receiving various inflows. The Yangjae stream, the second tier of the Han River, runs through the southern parts of Seoul, Korea and its middle part flows on the boundary of Seoul where land use is actively changing. Stream flow was greatly influenced by rainfall. Other than rainfall events, effluent discharge from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) comprised 51 % of stream flux. As a result, majority ions water chemistry was changed at the receiving zone of the discharged effluent (Zone A). Its contribution increased to 69.9 % at the second sampling period with low stream flow. In the middle zone, inflows from the northern area, recently developed to a residential district showed low $NO_3-N$ and high $HCO_3$, Ca, $SO_4$, and $SiO_2$ indicating the effects of groundwater and concrete. One inflow (T-8), with extremely high Na and Cl, median $SiO_2$, was assessed to have anthropogenic influence, however its contribution to main stream was under 1 %. Road construction near Y-13 also affected water chemistry leading to the highest Na and Cl concentration. These hydro chemical changes can be critically used to evaluate the changes in water budget and fate of chemicals in a peri-urban watershed occasioned by human activities on the Yangjae.
The purpose of this study are to develop a realistic methodology to estimate agricultural water supply for rice paddy fields from reservoirs, pumping stations, intake structures, and tube wells on river basin scale. Agricultural water supply from irrigation reservoirs are estimated using the daily or ten day's storage rate data and DIROMmaily Inigation Reservoir Operation Model) model. Estimation of daily water supply from pumping station are carried out from the annual water use with typical water supply patterns. The daily groundwater withdrawn are investigated from the gross water requirement for rice and the design capacity of tube well. And, the daily intake discharge are estimated the minimum amount from the gross water requirement, stream discharge, and the design capacity. During 1993 to 1997, the annual water supply for irrigation in the Han river basin ranged from 569 to 709 million $\textrm{m}^3/yr$, and the mean was estimated to be 640 million $\textrm{m}^3/yr$.

The temporal and spatial relationship of the weather elements such as rainfall and temperature is closely linked to the streamflow simulation, especially, to the flood forecasting problems. For the study area, Imjin river basin, which has the specific characteristics in geography with river cross operation between North and South Korea, the meteorological information in the northern area is totally deficiency, lead to the inaccuracy of streamflow estimation. In the paper, this problem is solved by using the combination of global (such as soil moisture content, land use) and local hydrologic components data such as weather data (precipitation, evapotranspiration, humidity, etc.) for the model-driven runoff (surface flow, lateral flow and groundwater flow) data in each subbasin. To compute the streamflow in Imjin river basin, this study is applied the hydrologic model SURR (Sejong Univ. Rainfall-Runoff) which is the continuous rainfall-runoff model used physical foundations, originally based on Storage Function Model (SFM) to simulate the intercourse of the soil properties, weather factors and flow value. The result indicates the spatial variation in the runoff response of the different subbasins influenced by the input data. The dependancy of runoff simulation accuracy depending on the qualities of input data and model parameters is suggested in this study. The southern region with the dense of gauges and the adequate data shows the good results of the simulated discharge. Eventually, the application of SURR model in Imjin riverbasin gives the accurate consequence in simulation, and become the subsequent runoff for prediction in the future process.

Increase of impervious areas due to expansion of housing area, commercial and business building of urban is resulting in property change of stormwater runoff. Also, rapid urbanization and heavy rain due to climate change lead to urban flood and debris flow damage. In 2010 and 2011, Seoul had experienced shocking flooding damages by heavy rain. All these have led to increased interest in applying LID and decentralized rainwater management as a means of urban hydrologic cycle restoration and Natural Disaster Prevention such as flooding and so on. Urban development is a cause of expansion of impervious area. It reduces infiltration of rain water and may increase runoff volume from storms. Low Impact Development (LID) methods is to mimic the predevelopment site hydrology by using site design techniques that store, infiltrate, evaporate, detain runoff, and reduction flooding. Use of these techniques helps to reduce off-site runoff and ensure adequate groundwater recharge. The contents of this paper include a hydrologic analysis on a site and an evaluation of flooding reduction effect of LID practice facilities planned on the site. The region of this Case study is LID Rainwater Management Demonstration District in A-new town and P-new town, Korea. LID Practice facilities were designed on the area of rainwater management demonstration district in new town. We performed analysis of reduction effect about flood discharge. SWMM5 has been developed as a model to analyze the hydrologic impacts of LID facilities. For this study, we used weather data for around 38 years from January 1973 to August 2014 collected from the new town City Observatory near the district. Using the weather data, we performed continuous simulation of urban runoff in order to analyze impacts on the Stream from the development of the district and the installation of LID facilities. This is a new approach to stormwater management system which is different from existing end-of-pipe type management system. We suggest that LID should be discussed as a efficient method of urban disasters and climate change control in future land use, sewer and stormwater management planning.
The continuous long-term rainfall-runoff simulation model SWAT has the advantage of being able to account for various land use, however, SWAT lacks the capability of simulating the drainage characteristics of urban area. On the other hand, SWMM, which is the most popular model for runoff analysis of urban watershed, has the advantage of being capable of considering surface and drainage characteristics in urban area, but SWMM cannot easily account for land use other than urban area within a watershed. In this study, SWAT-SWMM model, which builds on the strengths of SWAT and SWMM, has been applied to the Osan River Watershed which is a tributary watershed to the Gyung-Ahn River. From the application, the results from coupled SWAT-SWMM model has been compared to the ones from SWAT for each hydrologic component such as evapotranspiration, surface runoff, groundwater flow, and watershed and channel discharge, and the runoff characteristics of two models for each hydrologic component has been discussed.

Organic compost has been widely applied to the cropland because it has been thought as Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ESA) in Korea. In this study, two-year indoor rainfall experiments were performed. Surface runoff and groundwater volume from 10% and 20% slope plots were measured and water quality samples were collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, T-P and T-N. Flow weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values were computed to assess effects of various fertilizer treatments. FWMC BOD values for organic compost treated plots were higher than chemical fertilizer treated plots. FWMC BOD values for 20% slope plots were higher than those from those for 10% slope plots. The similar trends were found for COD and T-P. FWMC T-N values for chemical fertilizer treated plots were higher than organic compost treated plots. FWMC T-N values for 10% slope plots were higher than those for 20% slope plots. In Korea, excessive use of organic compost has caused extremely high levels of organic matter contents at the cropland. Since organic compost is very slow in releasing its nutrients to the soil, farmers usually apply excessive organic compost for immediate effects and maximum crop yields, which has been causing soil and water quality degradations. Therefore, thorough investigations for better nutrient management plans are needed to develop the ESA strategy in Korea.

Organic compost has been widely applied to the cropland because it has been thought as Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ESA) in Korea. However, many field researches have been done to investigate water quality impacts of organic compost uses, compared to those from chemical fertilizer applications. It was found that pollutant loads from organic compost applied croplands were higher than those from chemical fertilizer applied areas. However, there might be other unknown factors affecting the results since the experiments were performed at the outside fields. In this study, indoor rainfall experiments using the Norton rainfall simulator systems were done to minimize and exclude errors from unknown sources by controlling soil characteristics, rainfall amount, rainfall intensity, and fertilizer treatments. The amounts of surface runoff and groundwater percolated from 10% and 20% slope plots were measured and water quality samples were collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, and T-P. Flow weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values were computed to assess effects of different fertilizer treatments. It was found that average concentration values of BOD were 5.57 mg/L from chemical fertilizer treated plot and 8.08 mg/L from organic compost treated plots. For 10% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic compost treated plots were higher by 29.9% than those from chemical fertilizer treated plots. For 20% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic plots were higher by 38.8% than those from chemical fertilizer plots. FWMC BOD values for 20% slope plots were higher than those from those for 10% slope plots. The similar trends were found for COD and T-P. In Korea, excessive use of organic compost has caused extremely high levels of organic matter contents at the cropland. Organic compost are usually applied to the cropland to improve soil quality, while chemical fertilizer is applied to help crop growth.

Since industrialization, the production and utilization of various chemicals has contributed to improving the quality of our lives, but the subsequent discharge of massive waste is inevitable, and environmental pollution is becoming more serious every day. Exposure to chemicals as a result of environmental pollution is having a negative effect on human health and the ecosystem, and cleaning up the polluted environment that can affect our lives is a very important issue. Toxic aromatic compounds have been detected frequently in soil, groundwater, and wastewater because of the extensive use of oil products, and phenol, which is used to produce synthetic resins, textiles, and dyes, is one of the major pollutants, along with insecticides and preservatives. Phenol can cause dyspnea, headache, vomiting, mutation, and carcinogenesis. Phenol-degrading bacterium DWB-1-8 was isolated from the activated sludge of textile wastewater; this strain was identified as Comamonas testosteroni by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The optimal culture conditions for the cell growth and degradation of phenol were 0.7% K2HPO4, 0.6% NaH2PO4, 0.1% NH4NO3, 0.015% MgSO4·7H2O, 0.001% FeSO4·7H2O, an initial pH of 7, and a temperature of 30℃. The strain was also able to grow by using other toxic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, or xylene (BTX), as the sole source of carbon.
