Twelve bottom sediments and three cores were collected in Juam reservoir for a study on transportation, which was controlled by particle grain size (2mm-200{\mu}m,\;200-100{\mu}m,\;100-50{\mu}m,\;50-20{\mu}m,\;<20{\mu}m), and vertical distribution of heavy metals. Sediment cores were sliced into 2 to 5 cm intervals to measure heavy metal concentrations in interstitial water and sediments with depth. Pb isotopic compositions of core samples were determined to calculate sedimentation rate. Regardless of sampling sites, levels of heavy metals and trace elements in bottom sediments are nearly constant with mean values of $14.9\;{\mu}g/g\;for\;As,\;0.81{\mu}g/g\;for\;Cd,\;30.7{\mu}g/g\;for\;Cu,\;34.7{\mu}g/g\;for\;Ni,\;63.3{\mu}g/g\;for\;Pb\;and\;87.9{\mu}g/g\;for\;Zn$. In general, Cu, Pb, Zn, Wi, and Cr in fraction of $<20{\mu}m$ exhibit the highest concentration, but content of As is the highest in grain size of $2\;mm-200\;{\mu}m$ and $200-100\;{\mu}m$. Fe and Mn occur as the dissolved compositions of the highest concentrations in interstitial waters and increase in their concentrations toward lower part of cores. On the contrary, concentrations of Zn and Cu show the highest value in the uppermost part in cores, suggesting these elements are released from reductive dissolution of hydroxides and oxidation of organic matters under different redox conditions. The highest accumulations of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn contents in the sediment cores are observed at 0-4 cm layers, and concentrations of Cu and Pb are especially high, implying these heavy metals are originated from anthropogenic sources. The apparent sedimentation rate estimated using unsupported $^{210}Pb$ is 0.91 cm $year^{-1}$, corresponding about 10 cm sedimentation in total depth since construction of Juam dam. These results will provide available information for management of bottom sediment in Juam reservoir.
Pollutants from industry, mining, agriculture, and other sources have contaminated sediments in many surface water bodies. Sediment contamination poses a severe threat to human health and environment because many toxic contaminants that are barely detectable in the water column can accumulate in sediments at much higher levels. The purpose of this study was to make optimal treatment and disposal plan o( sediment for water quality improvement in small-scale resevoir based on an evaluation of degree of contamination. The degree of contamination were investigated for 23 samples of 9 site at different depth of sediment in small-scale J river. Results for analysis of contaminated sediments were observed that copper concentration of 4 samples were higher than the regulation of hazardous waste (3 mg/L) and that of all samples were exceeded soil pollution warning levels for agricultural areas. Lead and mercury concentration of all samples were detected below both regulations. Necessary of sediment dredge was evaluated for organic matter and nutrient through standard levels of Paldang lake and the lower Han river in Korea and Tokyo bay and Yokohama bay in Japan. The degree of contamination for organic matter and nutrient was not serious. Compared standard levels of Japan, America, and Canada for heavy metal, contaminated sediment was concluded as lowest effect level or limit of tolerance level because standard levels of America and Canada was established worst effect of benthic organisms. The optimal treatment method of sediment contained heavy metal was cement-based solidification/stabilization to prevent heavy metal leaching.

The Mokpo coastal waters receive discharges from three artificial lakes(Youngsan, Youngam, Geumho) and other terrigenous freshwater inflows(streams, sewage treatment effluent, fresh groundwater), which exhibit very high concentrations of nutrients and/or organic matters. To understand spatial distributions of nutrients(DIN, DIP, DSi) and other water quality parameters(Chl-a, water temperature, salinity, DO, COD, SS), field surveys were conducted at 10 stations in the Mokpo harbor and adjacent estuaries on May, July, September, and November 2008 within 10 days following discharge events from artificial lakes. In this study, the freshwater flow rate influxed by the operation of sea dike sluice had significant influence on water qualities of the Mokpo coastal waters, although nutrient concentrations in other freshwater sources such as streams, sewage treatment effluent, and fresh groundwater were much higher. As a result of statistical analysis, DIN, COD, and Chl-a had a negative correlation with salinity. Therefore it was shown that discharge extents, time, and nutrients from the Youngsan lake were major impact factors dominating the spatial characteristics of nutrients and other water quality parameters in the Mokpo harbor and adjacent waters. However, despite non-discharge from the Youngsan Lake on September of this investigated period, it was observed that the nutrient addition was taking place in the lower layer of the estuary suggesting nutrient supply through different pathways. This result has emphasized the need to implement the combined assessment about the cumulative impacts on the Youngsan Estuary environment and ecosystem due to freshwater inputs derived from the artificial lakes as well as other terrigenous inflows, or benthic releases.
Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds are highly carcinogenic chemicals and common groundwater contaminants that are observed to persist in soils. The adherence and slow release of PAHs in soil is an obstacle to remediation and complicates the assessment of cleanup standards and risks. Biological degradation of PAHs in soil has been an area of active research because biological treatment may be less costly than conventional pumping technologies or excavation and thermal treatment. Biological degradation also offers the advantage to transform PAHs into non-toxic products such as biomass and carbon dioxide. Ample evidence exists for aerobic biodegradation of PAHs and many bacteria capable of degrading PAHs have been isolated and characterized. However, the microbial degradation of PAHs in sediments is impaired due to the anaerobic conditions that result from the typically high oxygen demand of the organic material present in the soil, the low solubility of oxygen in water, and the slow mass transfer of oxygen from overlying water to the soil environment. For these reasons, anaerobic microbial degradation technologies could help alleviate sediment PAH contamination and offer significant advantages for cost-efficient in-situ treatment. But very little is known about the potential for anaerobic degradation of PAHs in field soils. The objectives of this research were to assess: (1) the potential for biodegradation of PAH in field aged soils under denitrification conditions, (2) to assess the potential for biodegradation of naphthalene in soil microcosms under denitrifying conditions, and (3) to assess for the existence of microorganisms in field sediments capable of degrading naphthalene via denitrification. Two kinds of soils were used in this research: Harbor Point sediment (HPS-2) and Milwaukee Harbor sediment (MHS). Results presented in this seminar indicate possible degradation of PAHs in soil under denitrifying conditions. During the two months of anaerobic degradation, total PAH removal was modest probably due to both the low availability of the PAHs and competition with other more easily degradable sources of carbon in the sediments. For both Harbor Point sediment (HPS-2) and Milwaukee Harbor sediment (MHS), PAH reduction was confined to 3- and 4-ring PAHs. Comparing PAH reductions during two months of aerobic and anaerobic biotreatment of MHS, it was found that extent of PAHreduction for anaerobic treatment was compatible with that for aerobic treatment. Interestingly, removal of PAHs from sediment particle classes (by size and density) followed similar trends for aerobic and anaerobic treatment of MHS. The majority of the PAHs removed during biotreatment came from the clay/silt fraction. In an earlier study it was shown that PAHs associated with the clay/silt fraction in MHS were more available than PAHs associated with coal-derived fraction. Therefore, although total PAH reductions were small, the removal of PAHs from the more easily available sediment fraction (clay/silt) may result in a significant environmental benefit owing to a reduction in total PAH bioavailability. By using naphthalene as a model PAH compound, biodegradation of naphthalene under denitrifying condition was assessed in microcosms containing MHS. Naphthalene spiked into MHS was degraded below detection limit within 20 days with the accompanying reduction of nitrate. With repeated addition of naphthalene and nitrate, naphthalene degradation under nitrate reducing conditions was stable over one month. Nitrite, one of the intermediates of denitrification was detected during the incubation. Also the denitrification activity of the enrichment culture from MHS slurries was verified by monitoring the production of nitrogen gas in solid fluorescence denitrification medium. Microorganisms capable of degrading naphthalene via denitrification were isolated from this enrichment culture.

The study with laboratory sandbox model has been carried out to address potential use of reclaimed water, as a countermeasure artificially recharging the coastal aquifer, to effectively prevent from seawater intrusion due to overexploitation. It also investigated plausibility for either preserving or recovering the freshwater interface facing with seawater intrusion. To do this, we assessed hydraulic properties in artificial aquifer seawater/freshwater interface) depending upon the variation of extraction, storage and injection of reclaimed water. The variation of interface between freshwater and seawater were visualized by Surfer 8(Golden Software, USA) according to given experimental conditions. The interface between seawater and freshwater has been sensitively influenced by the change of extraction rate, where seawater zone migrated much faster into freshwater zone even though extraction rate became decreased. However, decreasing recharge rate could slow down moving of saline water zone toward freshwater zone. When the recharge was solely introduced into the sand box model, saline water intrusion was retarded than those of recharge and extraction working together. And also, the level of salinity of saline water was diluted by artificial recharge. It finally revealed that the artificial recharge would hydraulically avoid seawater intrusion while the freshwater sources could be conservatively utilized.
Subsurface contamination of industrial hazardous organic substances is a serious social issue. Decomposing the hydrophobic organic compounds in the subsurface is technically difficult and the compounds can last as long-term contaminant sources of groundwater once they are sorbed on the soil. Although the danger of contaminated subsurface has long been recognized little was known about the effective remediation technique. Focusing on the remediation of the p-Cresol and 3, 5-Dichlorobiphenyl among subsurface contaminants, this paper studies the surfactant-enhanced desorption technique. Nonionic surfactant(Triton X-100) and anionic surfactant(SDS ) were used as desorbing solvents for extracting organic compound sorbed on soil particles. Sorption characteristics of soils and organic compounds were analyzed and the applications of surfactant solution were studied through batch tests and the flexible-wall permeameter tests. As a result of the sorption isotherm tests, a log-log linear relation was obtained between the linear-partition coefficient, $K_p$ and the octanol-water partition coefficient, $K_{ow}$ of each organic compound. The result of the batch test also showed that Triton X-100 at 0.5% of solution desorbs the 3, 5-Dichlorobiphenyl 28 times more than the water in the batch tests. The surfactant-enhanced subsurface remediation technique becomes more effective when the contaminants are hydrophobic and hard to be decomposed.

Cheonji, the largest caldera lake in Asia, is located at the summit of Baekdu Mountain. Cheonji is covered with snow and ice for about six months of the year due to its high altitude and its surrounding environment. Since most of the sources of water are from groundwater, the water temperature is closely related to the volcanic activity. However, in the 2000s, many volcanic activities have been monitored on the mountain. In this study, we analyzed the dimension of ice produced during winter in Baekdu Mountain using Sentinel-1 satellite image data provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). In order to calculate the dimension of ice from the backscatter image of the Sentinel-1 satellite, 20 Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) layers were generated from two polarization images using texture analysis. The method used in calculating the area was utilized with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to classify the GLCM layer which is to calculate the dimension of ice in the image. Also, the calculated area was correlated with temperature data obtained from Samjiyeon weather station. This study could be used as a basis for suggesting an alternative to the new method of calculating the area of ice before using a long-term time series analysis on a full scale.
Soil quality of most of Soil Network area was estimated healthy by employing Soil Pollution Indices (Soil Pollution Score and Soil Pollution Class). However, 1.5∼3.7% of the total Soil Network area was determined Soil Pollution Class (SPC) 4 which may need cleanup process due to slight or heavy pollution with arsenics and heavy metals. Numbers of the SPC 4 sites were 9, 47, 19, 17, and 17 in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1994, respectively During 1987 and 1994, all of SPC 4 sites were identified agricultural land except one in 1994. Soil Pollution Scores (SPSs) was determined high around smelters, metalliferous mines, and industrial sites among the 16 major soil pollution sources of the Soil Network. Also, most area of SPC 4 sites were densely populated in these area of the Soil Network. SPSs of Inchon and Taegu were high among the other major cities and provinces in Korea. Numbers of SPC 4 were high in the province of Kangwon, Kyongbuk, Kyongnam amongst. Cumulative numbers of SPC 4 multiplied by a weighting value 0.3 during 1987 and 1994 of the Soil Network were regressed to develop a model equation for prospecting the soil quality. The model equation was Y= 1.16+0.23x, where as Y is the number of Class 4 and x is the year. Resulting the area of SPC 4 were 4.8%, 6.0%, 6.6% of the Soil Network in the year of 2001, 2006, 2011, respectively Based on this results, the area of SPC 4 would increase 5, 7, and 10 times comparing the area polluted with heavy metals in 1987.

Stormwater runoff affects the quality of surface water and groundwater due to the nonpoint sources (NPSs) of pollutants that it carries during storm events. Typically, urbanized areas experience high pollutant mass emission because of paved roads and other areas which are all highly impervious. For this reason, proper identification of the levels of pollutants from the watershed area is important to pass the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea's water quality standards in rivers and streams. This research was conducted in order to determine and quantify the different constituents present in stormwater runoff generated from highly impervious areas in Cheonan City, Korea. Also, the average event mean concentration (EMC) of stormwater runoff from paved areas was compared with EMCs of other countries to determine the possible causes of its occurrence. In addition, the occurrence of first flush phenomenon was studied in order to find the first flush criteria to be used on the design of best management practices. The results show the pollutant concentration of stormwater runoff was higher than other countries due its landuse and relatively small size of catchment area. During the first 30 minutes of the rainfall events, occurrence of first flush phenomenon was highly evident. Several factors affected the pollutant concentrations in the stormwater such as landuse type, geographic and topographic characteristics, catchment area and amount of rainfall. This research can provide guidance in achieving an effective NPS pollution management applicable to highly urbanized areas in the future.

Organic compost has been widely applied to the cropland because it has been thought as Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ESA) in Korea. However, many field researches have been done to investigate water quality impacts of organic compost uses, compared to those from chemical fertilizer applications. It was found that pollutant loads from organic compost applied croplands were higher than those from chemical fertilizer applied areas. However, there might be other unknown factors affecting the results since the experiments were performed at the outside fields. In this study, indoor rainfall experiments using the Norton rainfall simulator systems were done to minimize and exclude errors from unknown sources by controlling soil characteristics, rainfall amount, rainfall intensity, and fertilizer treatments. The amounts of surface runoff and groundwater percolated from 10% and 20% slope plots were measured and water quality samples were collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, and T-P. Flow weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values were computed to assess effects of different fertilizer treatments. It was found that average concentration values of BOD were 5.57 mg/L from chemical fertilizer treated plot and 8.08 mg/L from organic compost treated plots. For 10% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic compost treated plots were higher by 29.9% than those from chemical fertilizer treated plots. For 20% slope, FWMC BOD values from organic plots were higher by 38.8% than those from chemical fertilizer plots. FWMC BOD values for 20% slope plots were higher than those from those for 10% slope plots. The similar trends were found for COD and T-P. In Korea, excessive use of organic compost has caused extremely high levels of organic matter contents at the cropland. Organic compost are usually applied to the cropland to improve soil quality, while chemical fertilizer is applied to help crop growth. Since organic compost is very slow in releasing its nutrients to the soil, farmers usually apply excessive organic compost for immediate effects and maximum crop yields, which has been causing soil and water quality degradations. Therefore, thorough investigations for better nutrient management plans are needed to develop the ESA strategy in Korea.
