Due to the seepage of groundwater, the resisting force of slopes decreases and the sliding force increases, resulting in significantly reduced slope stability. The instability of most natural slopes is closely related to the influence of groundwater. Therefore, it is important to study slope stability under groundwater seepage conditions. Thus, using a simplified seepage model of groundwater combined with the analysis of stresses on the slip surface, the limit equilibrium (LE) analytical solutions for two- and three-dimensional slope stability under groundwater seepage are deduced in this work. Meanwhile, the general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion is adopted to describe the shear failure of a slope. By comparing the results with the traditional LE methods on slope examples, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified. In contrast to traditional LE methods, the proposed method is more suitable for analyzing slope stability under complex conditions. In addition, to facilitate the optimization of drainage design in the slope, stability charts are drawn for slopes with different groundwater tables. Furthermore, the study concluded that: (1) when the hydraulic gradient of groundwater is small, the effect on slope stability is also small for a change in the groundwater table; and (2) compared with a slope without a groundwater table, a slope with a groundwater table has a larger failure range under groundwater seepage.
This study extends the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) application to delineate the saturated zones in shallow sediment and evaluate the groundwater flow in both downward and upward directions. Dry, partially and fully saturated zones and water level in the subsurface can be recognized from this study. High resolution seepage velocity in vertical direction was estimated from the temperature data in the fully saturated zone. By a single profile, water level can be detected and seepage velocity in saturated zone can be estimated. Furthermore, thermal gradient analysis serves as a new technique to verify unsaturated and saturated zones in the subsurface. The vertical seepage velocity distribution in the recognized saturated zone is then analyzed with improvement of Bredehoeft and Papaopulos' model. This new approach provides promising potential in real-time monitoring of groundwater movement.

In a NATM tunnel, fully grouted bolts are widely used as part of supporting system. Grouted bolts play an important role not as to take some parts of load acting on a tunnel lining but as to reinforce the ground adjacent the tunnel. In conjunction with tunnel construction, the presence of groundwater may pose a number of difficulties. With respect to tunnel design, influences of groundwater on tunnel behavior have been considered in many aspects. However, the effect on grouted bolts has been rarely investigated. In this study, the behavior of grouted bolts, which are affected by the seepage forces, was examined. To investigate the effects of seepage forces, the theoretical solutions for a drained condition were also found. Based on the theoretical solutions, ground reaction curves considering seepage forces were obtained. By comparing the ground reaction curves supported by grouted bolts with those for the unsupported cases, the effect of reinforcement was evaluated. Finally, through comparison between supported ground reaction curves in the drained condition and those in the case of groundwater flow, it was found that the grouted bolts are more structurely beneficial when the seepage occurs towards the tunnel than when there is no groundwater flow.
Under the groundwater level, the tunnel face is affected by the seepage force and the groundwater flow may cause a trouble to the tunnel support systems. The appropriate methods of analysis and design in the tunnel face and the lining, considering groundwater flow according to tunnel drainage condition are presented in this thesis. First, the effect of seepage on the stability of tunnel face was studied. Seepage force was estimated by the 3-D finite element analysis and the stability of tunnel face was checked by analytical method. Furthermore, using the finite difference method the stress and displacement on the face were computed for either case, where the seepage force is or is not considered, and the effect of seepage on the tunnel face stability was evaluated. Second, the effect of seepage force on the tunnel lining when construction is finished and steady state seepage flow occurs was studied and a design methodology considering seepage effect was made. Consequently, in case where the groundwater level remains almost unchanged and the steady state groundwater flow occurs, the proper countermeasures for face staility are required according to the condition of groundwater flow. Moreover, the tunnel lining should be designed and constructed considering the seepage force occuring by the groundwater flow toward the tunnel linings.
Flow exchanges between stream and groundwater are assessed on urban streams in Daegu, Korea. Two rivers and 25 streams with the total length of 240 km run through the study area. The interaction between surface water and groundwater was estimated using Darcy's method. The study was conducted by dividing the basin into 16 smaller watersheds, and for comparison purposes. Groundwater level, surface water level, hydraulic conductivity, thickness of aquifer, and the distance between the well and the nearest stream were used for quantifying the interaction. To investigations the groundwater interaction in the watersheds, the amount of effluent seepage from groundwater to the stream, the amount of influent seepage from the stream to groundwater, and the amount of annual interaction between surface water and groundwater were computed. The total amount of effluent seepage from the groundwater to stream in the basin was approximately $72{\times}10^6m^3/year$. The total amount of influent seepage from the stream to groundwater was approximately $35{\times}10^6m^3/year$. It appeared that the total amount of annual interaction between surface water and groundwater was approximately $108{\times}10^6m^3/year$ and the total groundwater flow balance was approximately $37{\times}10^6m^3/year$. The annual amount of interaction between the surface water and groundwater was the largest in the Goryung Bridge Basin($29{\times}10^6m^3/year$) and the least in the Dalchang Dam Basin($0.2{\times}10^6m^3/year$). The results show that flow exchanges between stream and groundwater are very active and that there are significant difference among the smaller watersheds. Finally, the results indicate that it is necessary to further investigate to more precisely understand the interaction characteristics between surface water and groundwater in urban areas.
The stability of a tunnel face is one of the most important factors in tunnel excavation. Especially, if a tunnel is located under groundwater level, groundwater may flow into the tunnel face and seepage forces acting on the tunnel face due to groundwater flow may affect seriously the stability of the tunnel face. Therefore, the seepage pressure at the tunnel face should be considered fir the proper design and safe construction of a tunnel. In this paper, the effect of tunnel advance rate on the seepage forces acting on the tunnel face was studied. The finite element program to analyze the groundwater flow around a tunnel with the consideration of tunnel advance rate was developed. Using the program, the parametric study for the effect of the tunnel advance rate and hydraulic characteristics of the ground on the seepage forces acting on the tunnel face was made. From this study, it was concluded that the tunnel advance rate must betaken into consideration as an additional parameter to assess the seepage forces at the tunnel face and a rational design methodology fer the assessment of support pressures required for maintaining the stability of the tunnel face was suggested for undetwater tunnels.

Sampling of waters from each stage of treatment system, SAPS (Successive Alkalinity Producing System), and spring water near the Hanchang coal mine of Kangwon. Province were carried out periodically and analyzed to evaluate the source and possible path of groundwater contamination by acid mine drainage(AMD). Chemical and sulfur isotope compositions showed that spring water was affected by seepage from mine tailings, and seepage of stonewall, a part of treatment system, was affected by both seepage from mine tailings and mine adit drainage. Through the treatment system no appreciable decrease of sulfur content was identified. And almost similar sulfur isotope compositions of water from each stage of the treatment system may suggest incomplete or very poor sulfate reduction by sulfate reducing bacteria.

When a tunnel is excavated below groundwater table, the groundwater flows into the excavated wall of tunnel and seepage forces are acting on the tunnel wall. Such seepage forces significantly affect the ground reaction curve which is defined as the relationship between internal pressure and radial displacement of tunnel wall. In this paper, seepage forces arising from the ground water flow into a tunnel were estimated quantitatively. Magnitude of seepage forces was decided based on hydraulic gradient distribution around tunnel. Using these results, the theoretical solutions of ground reaction curve with consideration of seepage forces under steady-state flow were derived. A no-support condition and a supported condition with grouted bolts and shotcrete lining were considered, respectively. The theoretical solution derived in this study was validated by numerical analysis. The changes in the ground reaction curve according to various cover depths and groundwater table conditions were investigated. Based on the results, the application limit of theoretical solutions was suggested.

The purpose of this study is the infiltration characteristics of soil cut-slope by rainfall. Stability analysis of soil cut-slopes has been conducted by limit equilibrium method on Seep/w and finite element method on Slope/w. Result is same as following. First. the hour when seepage line and groundwater in contact is proportionate from rainfall rate condition and upper natural slope gradient condition which is identical. Second, when seepage line and groundwater is contact, seepage line moves gradually at soil cut-slope surface. Finally, seepage line is formed similarly with soil cut-slope gradient. Third, when rainfall is ended, from the recording upper natural slope where the hour will pass it is stabilized
When the water curtain system is employed to keep the liquefied gas in the underground storage cavern, clogging is observed in borehole. Since this phenomenon causes serious difficulties in managing LPG storage cavern, it needs to detect the degree of clogging accurately under various circumstances. Thus, in this study the active factors of clogging, that is, groundwater head, injection water flowrate, and seepage water flowrate, were investigated experimentally using a physical model. Experimental results show that groundwater head around storage cavern increases as cavern Pressure increases, while it decreases as clogging becomes severe. The pressure in storage cavern is required to reduce up to atmospheric pressure in order to detect and identify the degree of clogging more accurately. The decrease of uroundwater head due to clogging slows down as the pressure in borehole increases. As amounts of suspended matters in injected water increase, both injection water flowrate and seepage water flowrate decrease linearly with time, and the flowrate of injection water drops rapidly compared with seepage water flowrate.
