The evaluation of grounwater flow in the Ingulam valley catchment area in the vicinity of SamKwang mine was studied. In this study, field hydraulic tests, groundwater flow measurement, and MODFLOW model application were carried out. The results of analysis are described as follows. The rainrate infiltrated into the ground in the study area, hardly reached the gneiss region deeper than EL.(+)100m above the surface of seawater. The rainwater infiltrated into the ground near the water system boundary, flowed out into the vicinity of streams and the travel time was between 15 and 263 years. Also, the estimated total flow rate of the groundwater in the study area was 307㎥/day.

This paper is on the modeling of two-dimensional groundwater flow, which is the first step of the development of Dynamic System Model for groundwater flow and pollutant transport in subsurface porous media. The particular features of the model are its versatility and flexibility to deal with as many real-world problems as possible. Points as well as distributed sources/sinks are included to represent recharges/pumping and rainfall infiltrations. All sources/sinks can be transient or steady state. Prescribed hydraulic head on the Dirichlet boundaries and fluxes on Neumann or Cauchy boundaries can be time-dependent or constant. Sources/sinks strength over each element and node, hydraulic head at each Dirichlet boundary node and flux at each boundary segment can vary independently of each other. Either completely confined or completely unconfined aquifers, or partially confined and partially unconfined aquifers can be dealt with effectively. Discretization of a compound region with very irregular curved boundaries is made easy by including both quadrilateral and triangular elements in the formulation. Large-field problems can be solved efficiently by including a pointwise iterative solution strategy as an optional alternative to the direct elimination solution methed for the matrix equation approximating the partial differential equation of groundwater flow. The model also includes transient flow through confining leaky aquifers lying above and/or below the aquifer of interest. The model is verified against three simple cases to which analytical solutions are available. The groundwater flow model shall be combined with the model of pollutant transport in subsurface porous media. Then the combined model, with the applications of the Eigenvalue technique and the Dynamic system theory, shall be improved to the Dynamic System Model which can simulate the real groundwater flow and the pollutant transport accurately and effectively for the analyses and predictions.

Radioactive contaminant from a nuclear facility moves to the ecosystem by run-off or groundwater flow. Among the two mechanisms, contaminant plume through a river can be easily detected through a surface water monitoring system, but radioactive contaminant transport in groundwater is difficult to monitor because of lack of information on flow path. To understand the contaminant flow in groundwater, understanding of the geo-environment is needed. We suggest a method to decide on monitoring location and points around an imaginary nuclear facility by using the results of site characterization in the study area. To decide the location of a monitoring well, groundwater flow modeling around the study area was conducted. The results show that, taking account of groundwater flow direction, the monitoring well should be located at the downstream area. Also, monitoring sections in the monitoring well were selected, points at which groundwater moves fast through the flow path. The method suggested in the study will be widely used to detect potential groundwater contamination in the field of oil storage caverns, pollution by agricultural use, as well as nuclear use facilities including nuclear power plants.

In this study, we suggested the management scheme of analyzing the national and oversea related policy against soil and groundwater contamination by radioactive materials due to nuclear accidents. In Korea, we need to remedy swiftly the contaminated land due to intensive land development demand. So, we need to develop more effective management scheme to recover actively the land contaminated by radioactive materials. We require to improve monitoring network, to expand media-specific monitoring system, to prepare management system for remediation of contaminated land, and to develop flow work for soil and groundwater remediation.

This study investigates the effects of human impact and precipitation on groundwater flow conditions at a small area in Dejima Upland using a transient three-dimensional simulation. To show the utility of the transient three-dimensional model, the results of the numerical model are compared with those of Theis problem for which analytical solution is available. It appears that over the time period studied, the results of the model agree well with the analytical solution. Simulation is undertaken for a period of 30days starting from May 1st, when irrigation starts. Groundwater flow patterns determined by a numerical model are presented in the form of plotted potential lines and discussed. Results of simulation clearly indicate that the groundwater flow system should be analysed using a transient three-dimensional model, especially for the region which is effected by human impact.
For total system performance of a potential radwaste repository, a hypothetical site is assumed with feasible boundary conditions. Assuming a coastal repository, the sensitivity of the depth and the location of a repository along with the distance to a joint on groundwater transport pathways is studied. Results from Connectflow analysis could be used as input of the MASCOT-t the probabilistic safety assessment code.

A photovoltaic powered ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis system was tested with a number of natural groundwaters in Australia. The objective of this study was to compare system performance at six remote field locations by assessing the impact of water composition and fluctuating energy on inorganic contaminant removal using a BW30-4040 membrane. Solar irradiance directly affected pressure and flow. Groundwater characteristics (including TDS, salts, heavy metals, and pH), impacted other performance parameters such as retention, specific energy consumption and flux. During continual system operation, retention of ions such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ was high (> 95%) with each groundwater which can be attributed to steric exclusion. The retention of smaller ions such as $NO_3{^-}$ was affected by weather conditions and groundwater composition, as convection/diffusion dominate retention. When solar irradiance was insufficient or fluctuations too great for system operation, performance deteriorated and retention dropped significantly (< 30% at Ti Tree). Groundwater pH affected flux and retention of smaller ions ($NO_3{^-}$ and $F^-$) because charge repulsion increases with pH. The results highlight variations in system performance (ion retention, flux, specific energy consumption) with real solar irradiance, groundwater composition, and pH conditions.

This study aims at investigating the relationship between dispersion coefficient ratio to molecular diffusion coefficient (D$_{l}$ /D$_{m}$) and Peclet number (Pe) for multi-solute system in non-Darcian flow regime. Existing understanding on solute dispersion is primarily derived from one-solute system in Darcian flow regime. We found that solute dispersion in rock fractures can be characterized by the mechanism of both macrodispersion and Taylor dispersion, even for non-Darcian f]ow domain. For the Darcian flow regime even different solutes lead to the same D$_{l}$ /D$_{m}$ at same Pe. However, as the flow becomes non-Darcian, solute with a higher molecular diffusion coefficient result in higher D$_{l}$ /D$_{m}$ at tile same Pe than that with a lower diffusion coefficient.cient.

Using results of groundwater flow system modeling for a hypothetical deep geological repository site, a distribution of groundwater flow rates at the disposal depth was analyzed and a method of applying this distribution to a safety assessment for a disposal of radioactive wastes was suggested. The distribution of groundwater flow rates was produced by hydraulic heads simulated from regional and local scale groundwater flow models for the hypothetical disposal site. The flow rates at the locations where deposition holes would be located were estimated. These rates were normalized by the maximum of the flow rates in order to probabilistically illustrate a possibility of canister failures at the deposition holes. From the normalized distribution, probabilistic expectations for mass discharges of radionuclides released from the canisters assumed to be failed were calculated and compared with those deterministically estimated under the assumption that the canisters at the same deposition holes were definitely failed. The suggested method can be contributed to constructing a methodology for safety assessment of a geological repository by reflecting natural conditions of a disposal site in more detail.
Under the groundwater level, the tunnel face is affected by the seepage force and the groundwater flow may cause a trouble to the tunnel support systems. The appropriate methods of analysis and design in the tunnel face and the lining, considering groundwater flow according to tunnel drainage condition are presented in this thesis. First, the effect of seepage on the stability of tunnel face was studied. Seepage force was estimated by the 3-D finite element analysis and the stability of tunnel face was checked by analytical method. Furthermore, using the finite difference method the stress and displacement on the face were computed for either case, where the seepage force is or is not considered, and the effect of seepage on the tunnel face stability was evaluated. Second, the effect of seepage force on the tunnel lining when construction is finished and steady state seepage flow occurs was studied and a design methodology considering seepage effect was made. Consequently, in case where the groundwater level remains almost unchanged and the steady state groundwater flow occurs, the proper countermeasures for face staility are required according to the condition of groundwater flow. Moreover, the tunnel lining should be designed and constructed considering the seepage force occuring by the groundwater flow toward the tunnel linings.
