This paper presents the results of investigation on tunnelling-induced ground surface settlement characteristics in water bearing ground using finite element (FE) stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of the coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as rock type, thickness of soil layer, permeability of shotcrete lining, among others. The results indicate that the tunneling-induced groundwater drawdown results in a deeper and wider settlement trough than without groundwater drawdown, and that the Error function approach does not yield satisfactory result in predicting a settlement profile. The results of analysis are summarized so that the relationship between the settlement and the influencing factors can be identified.
Well production by a riverbank filtration facility with multi-radial collector well systems in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyeong gun, Korea was evaluated. In this study, the drawdown at collector wells due to pumping and groundwater inflow rates along the horizontal arms of the collector wells were computed through numerical simulations. Sensitivities of the well production to hydraulic conductivity and well flow coefficient, which represents the resistance to the flow from the aquifer to the horizontal arms, were analyzed. Simulation results showed that, with given proposed pumping rate conditions, the drawdown in the caisson exceeded maximum drawdown constraints in the study site and the adjustment of the pumping rate at each well is needed. The drawdown is affected by the hydraulic conductivity of the main aquifer and the well flow coefficient, which means the profound field investigation of the study site is needed to accurately estimate the efficiency of riverbank filtration through radial collector wells.

In this paper, reliability analysis of surface settlement by ground water drawdown is performed using a reliability-groundwater flow numerical model. The result is compared with that of the deterministic model to evaluate the influence of the uncertainty from hydraulic conductivity in the soft ground as well as to determine the range of hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground. From the analyses, it was found that probability of failure to exceed the tolerable settlement was very high, if the hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground is decided from the deterministic flow model only. Reliability analysis which evaluates variance of hydraulic conductivity should be used together with the deterministic model for grouting design of tunnels to prevent ground water drawdown.
Braced excavation systems are commonly required to ensure stability in construction of basements for shopping malls, underground transportation and other habitation facilities. For excavations in deposits of soft clays or residual soils, stiff retaining wall systems such as diaphragm walls are commonly adopted to restrain the ground movements and wall deflections in order to prevent damage to surrounding buildings and utilities. The ground surface settlement behind the excavation is closely associated with the magnitude of basal heave and the wall deflections and is also greatly influenced by the possible groundwater drawdown caused by potential wall leakage, flow from beneath the wall, flow from perched water and along the wall interface or poor panel connections due to the less satisfactory quality. This paper numerically investigates the influences of excavation geometries, the system stiffness, the soil properties and the groundwater drawdown on ground surface settlement and develops a simplified maximum surface settlement Logarithm Regression model for the maximum ground surface settlement estimation. The settlements estimated by this model compare favorably with a number of published and instrumented records.
We have determined the optimal pumping rate of the PW-2 water well (depth=100 m) at Imgokri, Sangju City. Cutting analysis and geophysical logging data reveal water-producing horizons at 26.1-26.5, 28.0-30.0, 33, 58, and 71 m. For pumping rates of 40, 55, 70, 90, and $132m^3/d$ over 70 days, the estimated drawdown from the PW-2 well was 6.48, 11.56, 18.07, 28.99 and 60.26 m, respectively. During a constant-rate pumping test at a rate of $117m^3/d$, the cone of depression intersected an impermeable boundary after 120-150 min of pumping. Therefore, we consider the critical pumping rate for well PW-2 to be $90m^3/d$. After pumping at $90m^3/d$ for 70 days, the calculated drawdown was 28.82-31.27 m. We suggest an optimal pumping rate for well PW-2 of $70-90m^3/d$, as the optimal pumping rate should be similar to the critical pumping rate. Sharp increases in the slope of the time-drawdown relationship, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and oxidation-reduction potential during the constant-rate pumping test indicate the limited development of bedrock aquifers around PW-2.

Groundwater seepage into a tunnel is one of the main causes triggering tunnel collapse and the consequent ground subsidence. Thus, it is important to estimate adequately the groundwater inflow rate and porewater pressure change during tunneling with time elapse. In current practice, Goodman's analytical solution (or image tunnel method) assuming homogeneous ground condition around a tunnel is commonly used for estimating groundwater inflow rate. However, the generally-used analytical solution for estimating groundwater inflow rate does not consider groundwater level drawdown and permeability change with depth, and the inflow rate can be overestimated in design phase. In this study, parametric study was performed in order to investigate the effect of groundwater level drawdown and permeability reduction with depth, and transient flow analysis was carried out for studying the inflow rate change as well as groundwater level and porewater pressure change around a tunnel with time elapse.

Groundwater level drawdown of the first stage resulted from groundwater leakage into tunnel was predicted by an analytical approximation. And numerical modeling was performed to predict the flow rates into tunnel and the groundwater level decline in the vicinity of future proposed tunnel area using a groundwater flow model MODFLOW. Groundwater level of the first stage was predicted to decrease by 15.3 m in analytical approximation. The flow rates in the total length of the future tunnel, when it is excavated, would be approximately $1,870m^3/day$ in numerical model. The model predicts that the groundwater levels in the area around the future tunnel are expected to drop between 5 to 25 m relative to current groundwater levels. Under condition for a $50\%$ tunnel conductance increase, the flow rate was estimated to be $2,518m^3/day$ and the groundwater level drawdown was predicted to be between 5 to 35 m The flow rate and the predicted groundwater level drawdown under a $2,518m^3/day$ tunnel conductance decrease was estimated to be $1,273m^3/day$ and between 2 to 12 m.
The evaluations of daily safe yield and reciprocal influence of hot spring wells are important subjects that the specialized agencies of hot spring has to survey. The survey of hot spring had been executed by Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) prior to 1996. However, as of 2006, eight specialized agencies of hot spring are working on it and so the survey of hot spring is not consistent now. This study was carried out to analyze data from hot spring in the same way by every specialized agency. The time of residual drawdown was applied to evaluate daily safe yield because some of wells have slow recovery of drawdown. The reciprocal influence between hot spring wells was evaluated by drawdown of observation wells when a new well was pumped.

An analytical solution of groundwater flow is applied to design soil vacuum extraction for removing volatile organic compounds from the unsaturation zone. The governing equation of gas or vapor flow in porous media is nonlinear in that gas density depends on gas pressure. A linear equation suggested by researcher is similar to that of groundwater flow. The pressure drawdowns of confined and leaky aqufiers are calculated using Massmann's field data, and the pressure drawdowns are compared. A solution of Theis equation calculated by Massmann is modified using GASSOLVE9 program in this paper. The pressure drawdown using Hantush's analytical solution for leaky aquifer also compared to that of Massmann. Hantush's analytical solution gives good approximations to pressure drawdown.
This study is to quantitatively evaluate the impact on surrounding groundwater of waterway tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction in which A-dam and B-dam, so prediction of groundwater fluctuation and tunnel lining installation was studied. As a result, drawdown of groundwater level during tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction occurred about 3.58 m in the tunnel shaft. The initial condition of groundwater level recovered by up to 90 % was simulated after the completed the construction of the tunnel and lining installation. Groundwater inflow in the tunnel evaluated was analyzed to have exceeding water design criteria of the tunnel. The groundwater inflow is reduced to maximum $0.006m^3/min/km$ after lining installation done in the tunnel, so effect of lining installation was evaluated as 93 % or more. Drawdown of about 0.04~0.31 m occurs in the houses and temples analysis of groundwater system of the surrounding area from construction. Drawdown has occurred nearly by considering annual groundwater level fluctuation of National Groundwater Observation Network.
