Flow structures around a three-dimensional rectangular body with ground effect

  • An experimental investigation of the flow over the rectangular body located in close proximity to a ground board was reported using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The present experiments were conducted in a closed-loop open surface water channel with the Reynolds number, $Re_H=1.2{\times}10^4$ based on the model height. In addition to the PIV measurements, flow visualization studies were also carried out. The PIV technique provided instantaneous and time-averaged velocity vectors map, vorticity contours, streamline topology and turbulent quantities at various locations in the near wake. In the vertical symmetry plane, the upperbody flow is separated from the sharp top leading edge of the model and formed a large reverse flow region on the upper surface of the model. The flow structure downstream of the model has asymmetric double vortices. In the horizontal symmetry plane, identical separated flow regions occur on both vertical side walls and a pair of primary recirculatory bubbles dominates the wake region.

  • This study proposes an adaptive control algorithm for lateral motion of a UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) using an NN (Neural Networks). The lateral motion of the UGV can be corrupted with various uncertainties such as side slip. In order to compensate the performance degradation of the UGV under various uncertainties, an NN-based adaptive control is designed by utilizing a virtual control concept. Since both the drift and input gain terms are uncertain, the proposed method adapts the whole terms related to the difference between the nominal and real systems. To avoid a singularity problem with the adaptive control, the affine property of the UGV dynamic model is utilized and the overall closed-loop stability is analyzed rigorously. Finally, numerical simulations using Carsim are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Ground Experiment of Spacecraft Attitude Control Using Hardware Testbed

  • The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate ground-based experiment for the attitude control of spacecraft. A two-axis rotational simulator with a flexible ann is constructed with on-off air thrusters as actuators. The simulator is also equipped with payload pointing capability by simultaneous thruster and DC servo motor actuation. The azimuth angle is controlled by on-off thruster command while the payload elevation angle is controlled by a servo-motor. A thruster modulation technique PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) employing a time-optimal switching function plus integral error control is proposed. An optical camera is used for the purpose of pointing as well as on-board rate sensor calibration. Attitude control performance based upon the new closed-loop control law is demonstrated by ground experiment. The modified switching function turns out to be effective with improved pointing performance under external disturbance. The rate sensor calibration technique by Kalman Filter algorithm led to reduction of attitude error caused by the bias in the rate sensor output.

  • This paper presents the information transmission between on-board and ground-site in MAGLEV. considering safety and high speed operation and density operation, information transmission between them is necessary. Therefore it is necessary for transmission system to ensure high speed transmission, low error rate, massive information, and reliability of information. To provide above conditions, 1.1km signal line assembly was constructed and Frequency Shift Keying(FSK) modulation and Open System Interconnection(OSI) based high-level data link control(HDLC) protocol are applied. To modulate digital signal for transmission from ground-site to on-board, carrier frequency of 70kHz is used and 90khz is used for transmission from on-board to ground-site. Transmission speed is 2400bps for consideration of train speed, quantity of information, and data error rate. And this paper introduces information monitoring considering user interface and presents the method for an effective data transmission in MAGLEV which is now being tested and intends to provide for an intelligent train operation system in future.

A Design of Wide band Dual Folded Microstrip Antennas (광대역 이중 폴디드 마이크로스트립 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a single plane wide band microstrip antenna for integrated circuit as MMIC and LTCC is designed and fabricated. A new configuration for a wide band microstrip antenna with omni-directional pattern is proposed. This antenna consists of two rectangular folded dipoles, which are fed by a coplanar waveguide(CPW). It was effected stabilization ground that a signal plane of CPW feed have been limited ground plane. Therefore, a ground plane of folded structure should be extended outside folded antenna in this research. The characteristics of the proposed antenna were analyzed by using an FDTD methods. The return loss and radiation patterns were simulated and measured. The proposed antenna is get 120MHz bandwidth of PCS band and 250MHz bandwidth of IMT2000 band, used ISM band.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the daily heating performance of ground source multi-heat pump system with vertical single U-tube type GLHXs, which were installed in a school building located in Cheonan. Daily average COP of heat pump unit on Jan. 12th, 2009 at heating mode was lower than it on Nov. 10th, 2008 and Dec. 15th, 2008, because of lower EWT of the outdoor heat exchanger and relatively smaller size of condenser and evaporator. But, the system COP on the former was higher than it on the latter because ground loop circulating pump was operated in rated speed. It is suggested that the new algorithms to control the flow rate of secondary fluid for GLHX according to load change have to be developed in order to enhance the performance of the system COP.

Analysis of Effective Soil Thermal Conductivities and Borehole Thermal Resistances with a Line Source Method (선형열원법에 의한 지중유효열전도도와 보어홀 전열저항 해석)

  • Investigation of the effective soil thermal conductivity(k) is the first step in designing the ground loop heat exchanger(borehole) of a geothermal heat pump system. The line source method is required by New and Renewable Energy Center of Korea Energy Management Corporation in analyzing data obtained from thermal response tests. Another important factor in designing the ground loop heat exchanger is the borehole thermal resistance($R_b$). There are two methods to evaluate $R_b$ : one is to use a line source method, and the other is to use a shape factor of the borehole. In this study, we demonstrated that the line source method produces better results than the shape factor method in evaluating $R_b$. This is because the borehole thermal resistance evaluated with the line source method characteristically reduces the temperature differences between an actual and a theoretical thermal behaviors of the borehole. Evaluation of $R_b$ requires soil volumetric heat capacity. However, the effect of the soil volumetric heat capacity on the borehole thermal resistance is very small. Therefore, it is possible to use a generally accepted average value of soil volumetric heat capacity($=2MJ/m^3{\cdot}K$) in the analysis. In this work, it is also shown that an acceptable range of the initial ignoring time should be in the range of 8~16hrs. Thus, a mean value of 12 hrs is recommended.

Development of System Integration Laboratory for the Verification of UAV Avionics System Requirements (무인기 항공전자시스템 요구도 검증을 위한 통합시험환경 개발)

  • As part of the integration phases in developing a UAV, a System Integration Laboratory (SIL) has been developed to provide integrated test capability for the verification of avionics system requirements. The SIL has realized primary functions that are common in manned aircraft SIL's, and specialized laying stress on test data visualization and test automation under the closed-loop structure of the ground control simulation, aircraft simulation and flight simulation components. Those design results have led to easy and sure verification of lots of complex requirements of the UAV avionics system. The functions and performances of the SIL have been proved in four gradational test steps and checked to operate successfully in aircraft System Integration Test Environment for the integration of UAV ground station and aircraft.

Accuracy and robustness of hysteresis loop analysis in the identification and monitoring of plastic stiffness for highly nonlinear pinching structures

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) covers a range of damage detection strategies for buildings. In real-time, SHM provides a basis for rapid decision making to optimise the speed and economic efficiency of post-event response. Previous work introduced an SHM method based on identifying structural nonlinear hysteretic parameters and their evolution from structural force-deformation hysteresis loops in real-time. This research extends and generalises this method to investigate the impact of a wide range of flag-shaped or pinching shape nonlinear hysteretic response and its impact on the SHM accuracy. A particular focus is plastic stiffness (Kp), where accurate identification of this parameter enables accurate identification of net and total plastic deformation and plastic energy dissipated, all of which are directly related to damage and infrequently assessed in SHM. A sensitivity study using a realistic seismic case study with known ground truth values investigates the impact of hysteresis loop shape, as well as added noise, on SHM accuracy using a suite of 20 ground motions from the PEER database. Monte Carlo analysis over 22,000 simulations with different hysteresis loops and added noise resulted in absolute percentage identification error (median, (IQR)) in Kp of 1.88% (0.79, 4.94)%. Errors were larger where five events (Earthquakes #1, 6, 9, 14) have very large errors over 100% for resulted Kp as an almost entirely linear response yielded only negligible plastic response, increasing identification error. The sensitivity analysis shows accuracy is reduces to within 3% when plastic drift is induced. This method shows clear potential to provide accurate, real-time metrics of non-linear stiffness and deformation to assist rapid damage assessment and decision making, utilising algorithms significantly simpler than previous non-linear structural model-based parameter identification SHM methods.

  • In the splay manufacturing process, conveyor systems are widely used for conveying panels. In this conveyor, a large number of grounding lines are used in order to prevent a product failure due to static electricity. In many cases, the grounding line is disconnected due to the rotation of the transporting roller or curling, leading to product failure. In order to solve such a problem, there is a growing need for a system capable of detecting disconnection of a ground wire in real time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a disconnection monitoring system of ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) ground wire caused by friction between the conveyor drive part and the panel. The proposed system is a monitoring system that can detect disconnection and disconnection of ground wire using ATmega 2560 and Wheatstone Bridge circuit. It can detect disconnection of ground wire immediately and can take measures to reduce the defect rate due to static electricity. The system proposed in this paper is expected to be applicable to the production and test equipments of all industries where the ground wire is used.
